Just install xubuntu today and I saw the beautiful "xubuntu" loading screen image when the computer boots up. I also see this screen when the laptop shuts down. However after installing the proprietary Catalyst drivers for my laptop, that boot image was replaced with just a plain text "XUBUNTU 11.04" and a few lines of text. It looks ugly everytime I boot the laptop.
View 3 RepliesI just installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my Radeon HD3200, and upon reboot my mouse has disappeared. I can still use it, it's just that there's no pointer on the screen. In addition, moving windows and loading/scrolling any window is very, very slow.I also noticed there's no entry for the mouse in xorg.confI have run aticonfig --intial and aticonfig --initial -f, to no avail.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install the ATI Catalyst_11.1 proprietary driver for the past two days unsuccessfully.I've been using the instructions in this pdf from AMD's website, but it really hasn't done me any good. Despite the fact that the installation wizard says the install completed, nothing changes once I reboot.I read somewhere that it was possible to install it via the "Hardware Drivers" utility. Is that true? If so, how can I go about doing that.At the moment I've got the "ATI fire gl" driver activated, but playing videos in fullscreen is painfully slow and I'm hoping AMD's proprietary driver can help.btw, My system can run pretty much any video (HD or not) in fullscreen under Windows 7. To start from the beginning, I realised that I have no audio, so I tried a couple of fixes that I found online. Upon rebooting, all my graphics were very choppy (moving windows, scrolling etc). The sound is working though. I dont understand how fixing sound can mess with the graphics but hey it isnt working and thats what matters.I have an installer for the ATI drivers downloaded from ati.amd.com. when I had a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed these drivers everything worked 100% without any problems. Running the installer now doesnt seem to work. The log in /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log reports:

AFAICT, F14 does not have any formal support right now (no rpms, etc), and there are some pitfalls to using the ATI installer which I am sure have resulted in system re-installs, unhappy faces, and people stuck without a proper driver. This is because while the installer seems easy to use, it's unfriendly in so far as it does not check for pre-requisite software first, and when it craps outs, it doesn't tell you anything is wrong, but it will leave your system without a functioning X server. The first time I ran it, the GUI installer told me everything was complete and that all I needed to do was reboot! When I did, X would not work, and reinstalling the original xorg-ati driver, etc, did not fix it.....

And by spent the day updating to Fedora 15, I mean that like the last 3 updates I've tried with Fedora, they end up getting hosed and I was forced to rebuild using a live disk. That being said I was able to install a fresh instance of Fedora, as well as use leigh123linux's "F15,F14, F13 & F12 Nvidia driver guides" thread to install the necessary drivers on my machine. However after the last reboot, I'm stuck with a funky top screen.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't remove my old 10.6 catalyst drivers. First I have removed both fglrx packages installed from ATI repo. Then I removed the xorg file, run mkinitrd and finally a reboot to start again with radeon drivers. (fglrx module is not running anymore). After that I run the 10.8 installation script, aticonfig --initial, mkinitrd and finally the reboot. Now the fglrx module is running but when I open de catalyst control center the information tab shows catalyst 10.6 drivers version (8.741 package version). Radeon HD2400 + openSUSE 11.3. Is there something else I should remove before installing catalyst drivers again?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.
I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.
Has anyone been able to get latest catalyst drivers (10.3 or 10.5) working on kernel 2.6.34?
View 7 Replies View Relatedits pretty much my first install. I am duel booting with Vista. I followed the guidelines and made a partition for my Ubuntu install. Everything installed correctly, however, it tell you to activate drivers for my video card, then restart. After restart ubuntu will not boot, it just sits at the startup screen and does nothing, I waited like an hour just to make sure that it was not just installing more things. I have re-formatted my partition and am going to reinstall later. Oh, I installed 10.4.1.

Without installing any nvidia drivers my boot screen resolution and desktop resolution were fine. But I cudn't activate Extra Visual effects and so I installed nvidia drivers. Now the problem is that Extra visual effects work just fine. But during the boot, the splash screen has a very poor resolution.

I installed F10 yesterday and all went well, more or less. The system used to freeze randomly but after updating, everything seemed to work fine (I haven't tried audio yet, though).
I have an X1250 integrated graphics system that's working fine in Ubuntu. After playing around with F10 for a while I decided to download and install the latest ATI drivers from AMD's site. The installation posed no problems, but when I reboot the system it will come to a black screen at some point and freeze there.
I searched the web a little and came to this: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon, but I'm not sure if that's current or old news. If it's current and those ATI drivers can't be installed, I'd appreciate some help about removing them.
since i installed nvidia proprietary driver on opensuse 11.3 my boot-image is gone. This is not really in issue but i would like to have it back. is there a way to get it back or a bootimage howto or something?

I have installed openSUSE 11.4, and I really like it compared to other linux versions I've tried, but I find it requires a bit more linux know-how.
Being fairly new to linux, it has been quite the effort to learn but I started getting the hang of things via online support and such. Lately I've been having some problems.
I need linux to run a TCAD program, and it requires some openGL functionality and was giving me errors when I tried entering the software related modeling GUI.
Anyhow, I thought it had to do with my graphics drivers, so I decided to update them via ATI proprietary driver. After doing this, the system booted me into the console rather than X.
I tried numerous online guides on how to fix the issues, by running all sorts of boot commands (nomodset), and I read the graphics driver theory, as well as trouble shooting ATI graphics.
In the process, I also installed a radeonhd-xorg11-something through YAST, and that caused a black screen altogether upon boot. I managed to boot into failsafe with x, and from there I removed it via YAST, however this did not resolve issues. I also deleted any xorg.cionf files in hopes that the system will default back to the radeon driver.
As it stands right now, I can only boot into my system via failsafe mode. I'm keeping the unit off for now as it's probably tired from all the hard reboots I had to do . If someone can help me resolve this issue, I can turn it on and enter any commands required, such as finding out the graphics card, the kernel, the driver currently running, etc and I can post it here.
I installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my laptop and I guess they are working since World of Warcraft and other graphic dependent programs are working, but the problem is my boot up screen is really ugly now. Instead of the Fedora drop filling up I get a bar at the bottom of the screen that fills up. This happens only after installing the Catalyst drivers how do I change it back to the drop? This is the only issue I'm having.
Fedora 15 x64 is my operating system.
Basically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?
I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?
Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I know that the Ubuntu community is extremely active and more than willing to share their knowledge.
1. Make a disk image of my 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on my Syology CS407 NAS so I can do a bare metal restore. Why is this a couple of clicks on my Mac and Windows boxes, but so far not easy on Jaunty? Did I miss something?
2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?
3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?
4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.
Linux installs have come a long, long way from the old days, and are such a point and click operation that I just wonder what I'm doing wrong. Someone is bound to have sorted these things.

This is on a cloud instance of maverick 64bit.In using cloud init to install a package (also does not work manually) I receive the following error.issuing an update with --fix-missing also does not work. I do notice, however this is trying to hit ec2.archive. For iperf I don't know that it needs to be ec2 specific. To my knowledge this worked a few weeks ago. Also, where it is easy enough on a Desktop version of maverick to simply switch sources for the upgrades/updates I have not found how to specify a new url (i.e. Duke University vs. MIT) The repositories I am happy with just the location of the repositories.On this particular cloud image is it even safe to leave ec2 as it is a specialized stripped down image.

When I had a wubi install(after I restarted, logged in, etc.) a little icon appeared in the top right-hand corner of the screen informing me of an nvidia driver update, which was required to run compiz desktop effects. Now I have ubuntu installed on an actual hard drive(wubi was deleted beforehand) and I get no such icon. So I'm wondering how to update my drivers. BTW I have a 9500GT

My weak point in linux is system internals and the kernel, (which I am reading up on now). I am a computer scientist and so I am computer savvy, but have not had much experience until recently with linux. (I was a windows guy, but Ubuntu 10.10 has changed my opinion) I am trying to install drivers for the alfa networks wireless adapter AWUS036H. I followed their online manual and I didn't get very far. After looking at the error messages then I assume it is a kernel issue.
