I had catalyst 10.6 drivers and then i uninstalled it (by running fglrx-uninstall.sh). After that, I installed 10.8 version downloaded form [URL], but when I open catalyst control center it still says I have 10.6 installed.
View 2 RepliesI've been trying to install the ATI Catalyst_11.1 proprietary driver for the past two days unsuccessfully.I've been using the instructions in this pdf from AMD's website, but it really hasn't done me any good. Despite the fact that the installation wizard says the install completed, nothing changes once I reboot.I read somewhere that it was possible to install it via the "Hardware Drivers" utility. Is that true? If so, how can I go about doing that.At the moment I've got the "ATI fire gl" driver activated, but playing videos in fullscreen is painfully slow and I'm hoping AMD's proprietary driver can help.btw, My system can run pretty much any video (HD or not) in fullscreen under Windows 7. To start from the beginning, I realised that I have no audio, so I tried a couple of fixes that I found online. Upon rebooting, all my graphics were very choppy (moving windows, scrolling etc). The sound is working though. I dont understand how fixing sound can mess with the graphics but hey it isnt working and thats what matters.I have an installer for the ATI drivers downloaded from ati.amd.com. when I had a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed these drivers everything worked 100% without any problems. Running the installer now doesnt seem to work. The log in /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log reports:

AFAICT, F14 does not have any formal support right now (no rpms, etc), and there are some pitfalls to using the ATI installer which I am sure have resulted in system re-installs, unhappy faces, and people stuck without a proper driver. This is because while the installer seems easy to use, it's unfriendly in so far as it does not check for pre-requisite software first, and when it craps outs, it doesn't tell you anything is wrong, but it will leave your system without a functioning X server. The first time I ran it, the GUI installer told me everything was complete and that all I needed to do was reboot! When I did, X would not work, and reinstalling the original xorg-ati driver, etc, did not fix it.....
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust install xubuntu today and I saw the beautiful "xubuntu" loading screen image when the computer boots up. I also see this screen when the laptop shuts down. However after installing the proprietary Catalyst drivers for my laptop, that boot image was replaced with just a plain text "XUBUNTU 11.04" and a few lines of text. It looks ugly everytime I boot the laptop.

And by spent the day updating to Fedora 15, I mean that like the last 3 updates I've tried with Fedora, they end up getting hosed and I was forced to rebuild using a live disk. That being said I was able to install a fresh instance of Fedora, as well as use leigh123linux's "F15,F14, F13 & F12 Nvidia driver guides" thread to install the necessary drivers on my machine. However after the last reboot, I'm stuck with a funky top screen.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't remove my old 10.6 catalyst drivers. First I have removed both fglrx packages installed from ATI repo. Then I removed the xorg file, run mkinitrd and finally a reboot to start again with radeon drivers. (fglrx module is not running anymore). After that I run the 10.8 installation script, aticonfig --initial, mkinitrd and finally the reboot. Now the fglrx module is running but when I open de catalyst control center the information tab shows catalyst 10.6 drivers version (8.741 package version). Radeon HD2400 + openSUSE 11.3. Is there something else I should remove before installing catalyst drivers again?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.
I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.
I just installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my Radeon HD3200, and upon reboot my mouse has disappeared. I can still use it, it's just that there's no pointer on the screen. In addition, moving windows and loading/scrolling any window is very, very slow.I also noticed there's no entry for the mouse in xorg.confI have run aticonfig --intial and aticonfig --initial -f, to no avail.

After a clean install, the ATi drivers (for a Radeon x300) were automatically installed, and worked fine out of the box. Soon after all of this, I decided to run an update. Now, while my drivers are listed as installed in synaptic, nothing is recognized, not even the command "aticonfig" when typed in the terminal. When I try to access the Catalyst Control Center, it tells me that either I have no video drivers, or there's a problem with my card.Is there anything I can do about this? I've already tried reinstalling the drivers from synaptic.

I'm trying to update the driver on my Nvidia 8800 GTS 512. Nvidia has a native linux driver for this. I've downloaded and attempted to run it, but it returns this error:

So I'm attempting to stop the X server, though I don't understand what that is. Whoever came up with that name should feel bad.
With a bit of poking around the internet, I found the "Booting to a different runlevel" section on this page: [URL]
But the init command in console does nothing, and the file /etc/inittab is not there.
So how am I supposed to install this driver?
I've got an Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter and it works perfectly in Ubuntu 9.04 to 10.04, but when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 I had to restart my computer several times before the wireless card would start and I would be able to connect to any networks? I then changed to Fedora 14 and the problem was also present so I assumed the problem was my wireless card and not the operating system. However I recently wondered if it was the OS again and went back to 10.04 and my wireless card works flawlessly again. So I'm wondering if there was an update to the drivers in Ubuntu 10.10, and I assume Fedora 14 using the same version? How would I be able to see if they did change? And how would I be able to use the version of the drivers in Ubuntu 10.04 in 10.10 if it is the drivers what changed?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed a routine update through the update manager this morning and when the next time I turned my laptop on neither my graphics driver or my wirless driver were working. When I turned my laptop on I got an error saying:
Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA Kernel module. Please check your systems Kernel log for additional error messages.
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0)
(EE) No drivers available
After clicking ok to this message I get another with a series of options about how to resolve this ranging from troubleshoot to restart to run in low graphics just once. Once I open the session my wireless won't load up, but I can still connect to ethernet. I'm using a 3 year old HP pavilion laptop running Lucid Lynx. I'm not sure if this problem is related to the update, but it's the only thing that happened out of the ordinary before I ran into this problem. Unfortunately I cannot remember what was included in the update.
Tonight I upgraded to 11.04. Once I had finished the upgrade, I restarted my computer as it told me too. When I got past the ubuntu 11.04 (purple background orange dots), it simply went to the terminal and asked me to log in. I tried to restart the X server with "sudo service gdm restart" but no display popped up. I happened to have a few NVIDIA drivers in my downloads file also so I gave these a try, but the "install script" failed.
After all this I booted Ubuntu in graphic failsafe mode. I then decided to see what would happen if I removed the proprietary driver. Upon doing this and rebooting my Ubuntu booted into graphical mode "yay!".So without the Nvidia drivers I can finally see something other than terminal, but, I need those NVIDIA drivers for my work. So what can I do? I have tried installing the new NVIDIA linux drivers from the NVIDIA website,and have tried Installing the recommended driver via "additional drivers", but both have resulted in my being stuck in terminal.
Currently I am trying to update my drivers in 11.04 on a dell inspiron mini.
I do not believe it is a pure dell problem, as my regular dell xps running 10.10 has been having to problems updating.
I go into additional drivers and start having it search but it gets stuck and states:
Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available.
Does this mean the servers are just really busy? Or do I have a problem somewhere on my end?

The graphics card in question is an ATI HD 5750, and mouse is an Apple bluetooth 'magic' mouse.So far I've managed to fix the mouse, but not the graphics.
At first I didn't have any display at all, but I was able to ssh into the machine and get part way through the proprietry graphics driver installation. I have a problem with starting ubuntu 10.10, I changed my graphics card from an ATI card to a Nivida card a week or so ago (Machine has dual boot). I've sort out the windows install, but cant get into ubuntu to update the drivers. It boots as far as console but just leaves me with the text screen. How do I update the drivers from there or get a basic console screen to come up so I can update?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI updated fedora 10 a few days ago, by blindly installing every update available, and when i restarted, my nvidia drivers weren't loading, and I'm having an issue I had before, where the signal being sent to the monitor is out of frequency range. Basically when fedora tries to load its GUI, my monitor just goes blank. Before I could only fix it by plugging in a different (less tempermental) monitor, and messing around with the display driver.
I was wondering if there is a way to mess with the drivers from the command line. I really don't like switching out monitors, and i want to learn the skillz and such.
I ran an update yesterday ( like i do most days ) and now my dual screen doesnt work and when i load the nvidia conrol panel it says to run a command as root ( summat liek nivida-xorg ) it then does something tomy xorg that then completely breaks it.
I havent made any changes other than the update.
How do i get nvidia installed properly again?

I updated FC14 which included the kernel and also the nvidia drivers kmod. Then after a reboot the video driver wouldn't load. From another terminal I tried different things to fix it and didn't managed. I eventually erased all nvidia drivers so that I can get the default one. Now every time it boots I get a really low light. I can login, but can't see. It seems that the whole screens has about 5% light and I can't see to do anything. I managed now to boot into FC live CD for FC15 and I have light. For FC14 live CD it's the same no light problem.
I tried all older kernels to boot but I have the same problem. I am using PAE kernel and that's why I installed the kmod drivers. But now, since they are not anymore and I can't see anything, even though I am logged in I don't know what to do next. Is there something I can do from FC15 live cd? How can I go using the terminal to my harddisk and how to add the driver or any low graphic driver so that I can have light? After I did yum erase *nvidia* the light went almost off.
