OpenSUSE :: 3D Acceleration In VBox Enabled - Installing Catalyst?

May 13, 2011

I've never got if, after enabling the 3d acceleration in virtualbox and installing the guest additions in safe mode, you still need to install the original drivers (catalyst in my case). Do know that by chance?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Switch On 3d Acceleration Without Installing The Proprietary Driver From ATI/AMD?

Jul 26, 2011

I'm using openSuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4. My graphics card is an Asus EAH 5450 with an ATI radeon HD 5450 GPU. I'm using the opensource radeon driver. When I open sysinfo:/ in Konqueror, I see the following info:

Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
Model:
2D driver: radeon
3D driver: swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.8.2))

How do I switch on 3d acceleration without installing the proprietary driver from ATI/AMD? I know this must be possible because on another computer, I have also openSuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4 and an ATI radeon HD 4350 installed and it has 3d enabled directly after installation of openSuse with the opensource radeon driver.

Ubuntu :: Boot Image Replaced After Installing Catalyst Drivers

Jun 18, 2011

Just install xubuntu today and I saw the beautiful "xubuntu" loading screen image when the computer boots up. I also see this screen when the laptop shuts down. However after installing the proprietary Catalyst drivers for my laptop, that boot image was replaced with just a plain text "XUBUNTU 11.04" and a few lines of text. It looks ugly everytime I boot the laptop.

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 / KDE 4.7 - VBox Win7 SP1

Aug 6, 2011

I have Vbox 4.0.4_OSE installed on my 11.4/KDE4.7 Laptop with Win7 and WinXP VMs installed. Generally runs well, although the Win7 VM seems to lock up on occasion if I ignore it for too long. Compared to having to reboot to Win7 to do the few things still stuck on Windoze, it is a GREAT solution.

Question: I have seen several forum items related to difficulty with dual boot systems and the installation of Win7SP1, regarding SP1s checking the MBR for the Win7 boot loader. Has anyone done a SP1 update to a VM on Vbox? It is sort of unclear what SP1 might see in the VM disk container associated with the VM. Since the initial load process for a new VM is time consuming, I thought I would ask first before blowing up my otherwise working Vbox system and then having to reload from scratch.

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Connect A Local Printer To VBox

I installed recently opensuse 11.3 and then Virtualbox from Sun Webpage. I have a local printer connected to one of the usb ports. With 11.2, VBox saw perfectly that printer and I could connect normally to it. Now, VBox sees the printer: if I click on the usb icon in the status bar it appears, but dimmed, and I cannot connect to it. I tried to disconnect and reconnect the printer physically, but nothing changed.

OpenSUSE :: VBox - Kernel Driver Not Installed

Oct 21, 2010

I have downloaded vbox from its site and installed it. I created a vm but when I try to start it, I get error:
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing:
'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'
as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

And when I try 'sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup', I get:
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules done
Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules done
Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS failed
(Failed, trying without DKMS)
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules failed
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)

And this is /var/log/vbox-install.log:

1) it freezes during Auto Configuration.
2) freezes during boot initialization.
3) after reboot it keeps prompting me to complete a failed install, and doesn't matter if I accept to complete or not, I have the same problem.
4) freezes randomly executing system programs.

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 - VMware And VBox (Webcam Video Garbled)

Mar 25, 2010

I am running OpenSuse 11.2 64 - I have vmware Player and Vbox loaded and working fine - I have XP running in each VM - I have a Creative Live cam and was accessing it in each of the VM's, because I can't access it in Suse. This worked very well until recently. I received updates for Suse, one of which was a kernel update - I installed and rebooted. All of a sudden my time to boot took for ever - however - once up and running every thing seemed fine. After a few boots the system started booting normally and the video from my live cam in both VM's is garbled and and essentially not working right.

Video seems to work correctly in all other areas - I removed the creative software and reinstalled in each of my VM's No change. One last thing - I recently (a week or so before my problems) installed an Nvidia video card. I previously used on board video (also Nvidia) I had no problems either in the VM's or Suse until the kernel update. I have removed Vbox and reloaded and set it up (/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup) problem still there.
My OS is:Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64
New Video is: G96[GeForce 9500 GT] Driver - nvidia

Fedora Installation :: Installing 14 On Dell E6510 With UEFI Enabled ?

Jan 20, 2011

I opened a bug for this one in December, but it's not getting much attention as yet, so I thought maybe the crew here could take a whack at it. Here's the text, slightly modified with minor clarifying updates.

Description of problem: When booting from CD burned with Fedora-14-x86_64-netinst.iso, grub starts but when handing off to kernel, text appears in upper left corner of screen and system locks up, requiring power-off to be performed to return functionality.

In testing, grub itself has always worked without visible flaw, and the various built-in functions are accessible (menu editing, command line, etc.). It's just once tries to go any further that it breaks.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): unknown

How reproducible: Always reproducible

Steps to Reproduce:Download Fedora-14-x86_64-netinst.iso and burn to disc Select optical drive from Dell Latitude E6510 notebook from boot options menu Allow boot process to proceed

Actual results: System lock after displaying the following text:

Code:

Additional info: System is running BIOS revision A06 (latest as of today). CPU is Intel Core i7 Q720, and memory total is 4GB. Grub identifies 640K lower and 3,339,004K upper memory (commas inserted for clarity). Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit installation performed properly in UEFI mode.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: No 2d Acceleration On Radeonhd Driver?

Dec 30, 2009

I have a AGP Radeon HD3650 RV635. I've tried using the ATI Catalyst 9.12 drivers, and they work ok with 2D/3D DECCELERATION. 3D works but it's extremely slow, maximizing a window takes 10secs, videos skip when played in fullscreen. Disabling Compiz doesn't help much, in 2D mode, windows redraw slowly.

I'm trying to install the open radeonhd drivers, and so far, it's booting into gnome, but it's barely usable. There is no 2D acceleration (log says ShadowFB only) and glxinfo reports:

OpenSUSE Install :: 3D Driver - Swrast - No 3D Acceleration - 7.10 - And X64

Mar 17, 2011

I installed Suse 11.4 and have a couple of questions.

I installed the newest Nvidea driver for linux but when I look under system info it sais 3D driver: swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.10)) How can I turn this on?

Also under CPU info the speed switches between 800MHz, 1400MHz and the normal 2.6Ghz (x4 for the Quad Core). Is something wrong or does it shows how much the system is using current?

Lastly my pc shows the following:

OS: Linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop x86_64, Current user: robertjan@linux-18xg, System: openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64), KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"

Since I see x86_64 how do I know if I installed the x64 version which I downloaded?

opensuse v11.2, linux 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop x86_64

The video acceleration is clearly not enabled since I can practically watch each pixel drawn. (Well, a bit hyperbolic, but really slow.) Another system, same hardware, had this slow video problem and at one point required a complete OS re-installation. The slow video refresh went away. So there is some way to configure the graphics+display to enable acceleration at install time.

After that I run the 10.8 installation script, aticonfig --initial, mkinitrd and finally the reboot.
