Ubuntu :: Installing Drivers For AWUS036H On 10.10?

Jan 12, 2011

I have been using Linux for over a month and have gone through several books on it. My weak point in linux is system internals and the kernel, (which I am reading up on now). I am a computer scientist and so I am computer savvy, but have not had much experience until recently with linux. (I was a windows guy, but Ubuntu 10.10 has changed my opinion) I am trying to install drivers for the alfa networks wireless adapter AWUS036H. I followed their online manual and I didn't get very far. After looking at the error messages then I assume it is a kernel issue. Here is the error messages I get when I am trying to make the program:

steven@steven-Satellite-A100:~/Downloads/Software/Wireless_Adapters/AWUS051NH/Drivers/RT2870_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.0$ sudo make
[sudo] password for steven:
make -C tools

Ubuntu Networking :: ALFA AWUS036H Not Loading Webpages

Feb 12, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10 and I am trying to get my ALFA network adapter to work. It shows a few wireless locations including my brother who lives beside me. He is going to let me use his internet on my laptop. His connection is opened and I can connect to it fine... but no sites load... I've tried about 4 other open networks that I picked up and the same thing... it sometimes loads the first page but then thats it... This is suppose to be the best network adapter on the market for under $100. I have a 5dBi ant and a 2.4ghz 6dBi ant.

Oh yea, I've tired this on two other ubuntu 9.10 desktops and 1 laptop and get the same thing... I am however able to connect to my wireless router and browser the internet... but I will not have internet much longer

Ubuntu Networking :: Install Patched Driver For AWUS036H?

Mar 8, 2011

I have scoured the web for every bit of information I can find regarding installing the ieee80211 patched driver for the realtek rtl8187, to use an Alfa AWUS036H for packet injection. Error after error after error, I have had no success, and all I can find is other people with the same setup having the same problems.

Assume I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 straight out the box, so no updates have yet been made. Is someone in the know willing to post some step by steps on how to download, install and patch the necessary driver and install necessary software, including precise info on how to blacklist or remove mac80211 version rtl8187.ko in order to replace it with the patched ieee80211 version?

I know there's a tutorial on here somewhere for installing rtl8187 in an older version of Ubuntu, and in that thread, the people with Ubuntu 10.10 all seem to be having the same problems.

Ubuntu Networking :: AWUS036H - RTL8187 Wireless Adapter Slow

May 29, 2010

This is wireless adapter: [URL]... USB/Detail.bok I have 2 AWUS036H Wireless USB adapter that uses the RTL8187 Chipset connected to a USB 2.0 Port. It is very slow when I try to go to websites or download anything using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. The max speed I can get out of it is 135 Kilobytes per second when downloading anything. But when I am on Windows I can max out 2.6 Megabytes per second. I have been trying to find a solution but have found none. When I look at the light on the wireless adapter and compare it to what it looks like on both Ubuntu and Windows. It seems that the wireless adapter light is dimmer on Ubuntu. So I was thinking it was txpower set very low. I changed it but no success on changing speed. I am using WPA2-PSK which obviously uses AES. I have also tested it while it is in WEP and when it is Open with no change in speed. Speed results Ubuntu 10.04: Speed results Windows 7: I changed the settings to Megabytes on those speed results.

When I plug the USB adapter in, the computer locks up. Only while in Ubuntu though. Not sure what the deal is. Chipset is RealTek RTL8187. The adapter is new, fresh out of the box.

Ubuntu Networking :: ALFA AWUS036H - Adapter Not Running On Any Channel At All

Dec 8, 2010

I work for a firm of solicitors as the IT guy and I have been asked to assess the security of our network. I have recently bought an ALFA AWUS036H USB wireless adapter to help test the wireless networks. We have a few old devices that only run WEP, which I know from the start is bad. I'm trying to use the adapter with aircack. I issue the command:

[code]...

Now I set the adapter to channel 11 using airmon but running iwlist mon0 channel says the adapter is not running on any channel at all. Has anyone else experienced simular issues, and if so how was this resolved?

Ubuntu Networking :: RTL8187L Updated Driver For Kernel 2.6.32/2.6.31 For ALFA AWUS036H

Jan 5, 2010

i have ALFA AWUS036H 500mw wireless card which uses RTL8187L chipset. Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 come with preloaded rtl8187 driver but they DO NOT work for internet surfing. However they do work with aircrack suit for injecting etc. Specific problem is: They only work with really close ranged AP, anything far and you will have random disconnects or inability to connect. So basically its unstable compared to patched driver.

To get this alfa card working for internet access, the only way currently is to use any LInux distro with Kernel 2.6.30 and lower. Starting from Kernel 2.6.31 they have made some changes to net api structure which wont let you patch the driver with the patch available at aircrack website which is normally used to make this driver suitable for internet browsing. Refer to this thread for more info: [URL]... I am currently using backtrack 4 pre final but i was going to install kubuntu 9.04 till i recieved an email from realtek with a new driver that compiles in kernel 2.6.31. I tested it on Kubuntu 9.10 and it compiled fine but i could not make it run. Under NetworkManagement for Kubutnu, the problem is that it keeps asking for WEP key and gives me the message 'wlan4 failed to connect' instantly after i enter the key, so its possible that its not compatible with NetworkManagement. I havent tried it with wicd yet, it may work........

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Syntax For Installing Printer Drivers?

I'm reasonably new to Linux and very new to Ubuntu . I've just installed 9.10 as a dual boot on a Windows XP Pro Dell Inspiron 9200. I have a Samsung CLP-315 that I need to configure first as a local printer then as a wireless network printer. I found the software (.bin file) on the Samsung site and downloaded it but that's as far as I got. Can I use any of the GUI package managers or do I need to use Terminal and command line syntax? Here's the real question "what is the syntax for installing software/drivers?"

I've got an old Gateway desktop machine that a friend gave me, but any time I try to do something in a window-based environment like GNOME or KDE, the system locks up. I'm under the impression that this is a driver issue since the ethernet and video are integrated on the motherboard and neither works appropriately.

I cracked the case and got the number for the motherboard, which is: 4000811. From here I'm not quite sure what to do to make sure I've got the right drivers for the motherboard in place and could use some I'm on 10.04 server and ONLY have access to a command line.

Ubuntu :: Installing Nvidia Drivers Kills?

Jun 19, 2011

Three times so far I have had to re-install ubuntu because I installed an updated or new Nvidia graphics driver for my GeForce FX 5200 The first time, using Natty Narwhal, I installed an updated graphics driver, and upon reboot, I was presented with a blank screen that did nothing. Being a first-time Ubuntu user, I assumed it was me, or a bug in the new release. So I burnt a Lucid Lynx cd on another pc, and installed that instead. Same problem when I installed a new graphics driver, again via Admin>>Hardware Drivers. Reboot yielded a blank screen. Booted from cd again, as I had no files yet to worry about, and everything seemed to be fine, providing I stayed away from that tempting hardware drivers button.

I then accidentally installed a new driver when installing the dependencies(via terminal) for OGRE (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) This time, my terminal froze, Firefox wouldn't boot, and a reboot yielded a blinking, blank login screen that did not do anything. Obviously, I'd like to have a graphics driver, as currently I can't run anything that needs 3d acceleration (Games, 3d simulations, even Desktop effects), but it's not absolutely necessary. So if nobody can suggest a fix, short of a new computer, new graphics card etc, can anybody suggest a way that I can stop myself accidentally installing anything driver-ish? The driver worked fine on windowsXP, but there's two reasons I'm not going back to that: a) I hate it. Hate, hate, hate.b) I've lost the activation key that came with computer, so I can't reinstall.

Further detail can be provided on request. Computer is Dell Dimension 2400, 256Mb RAM, Hard drive is almost empty. Old and slow, but I like it.

Anyway hopefully someone can answer the driver question. Lastly is there anyway to get Hardware Acceleration if using an Intel i5 system?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Path For Installing Updates / New Software And Drivers

Jul 16, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 64bit to run along Winxp in a dual boot format. I have heard many good things about Ubuntu but am using it for the first time. I have used a ntfs partition of 30GB for Ubuntu. During the installation part I was asked for the size and I gave 8 GB, I read that this was recommended. There are quite a few things I would like to know.

1. What's the difference between Ubuntu software center & Synaptic software manager?
2. Can you do everything easily via the GUI?
3. My Nvidia 8800 GT works on 1440x900 on my win xp OS. Here it doesn't seem to get to that. Additional drivers window says that 173 version is active but not in use.
4. Where do all the updates/new softwares/ drivers etc get installed? I mean the path. Like in Xp I can give a path for the installation. Can I do that in here?
5. I want to install GNS 3 which is a routing simulator and have heard that Ubuntu is very stable for it.
6. How can I get desktop icons on the desktop?
7. What's the use of 4 workspaces? I mean why is it used and what are the advantages.

I tired searching the Internet but most of them just so confusing that it feels to difficult and am afraid I might break something. Plus most of the commands are in cli that I am not able to grasp.
