OpenSUSE Install :: Boot - After Installing New Graphics Drivers OpenSUSE 11.4

I have installed openSUSE 11.4, and I really like it compared to other linux versions I've tried, but I find it requires a bit more linux know-how.
Being fairly new to linux, it has been quite the effort to learn but I started getting the hang of things via online support and such. Lately I've been having some problems.
I need linux to run a TCAD program, and it requires some openGL functionality and was giving me errors when I tried entering the software related modeling GUI.
Anyhow, I thought it had to do with my graphics drivers, so I decided to update them via ATI proprietary driver. After doing this, the system booted me into the console rather than X.
I tried numerous online guides on how to fix the issues, by running all sorts of boot commands (nomodset), and I read the graphics driver theory, as well as trouble shooting ATI graphics.
In the process, I also installed a radeonhd-xorg11-something through YAST, and that caused a black screen altogether upon boot. I managed to boot into failsafe with x, and from there I removed it via YAST, however this did not resolve issues. I also deleted any xorg.cionf files in hopes that the system will default back to the radeon driver.
As it stands right now, I can only boot into my system via failsafe mode. I'm keeping the unit off for now as it's probably tired from all the hard reboots I had to do . If someone can help me resolve this issue, I can turn it on and enter any commands required, such as finding out the graphics card, the kernel, the driver currently running, etc and I can post it here.

I've lost my GUI while attempting to install the latest ATI proprietary driver. I followed their instructions on how to uninstall it but it didn't give me my GUI back. How do I get back to the default drivers that came with my installation? I have a Radeon 3850.
Booting into safe mode doesn't give me a GUI.
I want to try to reinstall the ATI proprietary drivers eventually. I have them on the hard drive, but I have had no luck installing them using the CLI so far.

I installed fedora 11 yesterday, and didn't get time to do anything else. And the first thing I did today was to install the nVidia graphics drivers. But after I rebooted the loadings screen comes up (the one with 3 loading bars) and then it's just a black screen with a blinking _

I've installed my the ATI drivers as per this link: SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSEHowever when trying to reboot on normal mode the OS opens only tty1 (terminal 1?), you know, the one with green theme background. Fortunately I was able to reboot and log with failsafe. Any ideas why this is happening and how I can fix it?

But after reboot i see only black screen....
My vga is ati hd4770. Looking for a full tutorial how install drivers (maybe with screens). Please help me.
With ubuntu/linux mint everything was working perfectly.

I just installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my Radeon HD3200, and upon reboot my mouse has disappeared. I can still use it, it's just that there's no pointer on the screen. In addition, moving windows and loading/scrolling any window is very, very slow.I also noticed there's no entry for the mouse in xorg.confI have run aticonfig --intial and aticonfig --initial -f, to no avail.

I'm using openSUSE 11.4 KDE upgraded from 11.3. No nonstandard packages that I know of. I get this error messages on boot :

I've recently managed to install 11.4 with both Gnome 2.32 and KDE 4.6, moving from 11.3. However, there seems to be a significant speed degradation in terms of opening applications, switching windows, clicking on links etc. I have installed the Radeon graphics drivers from YaST, without much success. IMHO, Gnome seems slightly faster than KDE; however, it's still not great.
My machine worked well with 11.3 and seemed to be going pretty well; however, I wanted new and shiny, so. The PC has an AMD dual-core chip (can't remember the exact spec). Alternatively, is there good benchmarking software I could try to see if I can get an idea of my real speed?

I've installed fglrx drivers with 1click install on openSuse11.3. If I try to boot in "normal mode" I end up in black screen. However if I boot in safe mode, then login and startx, everything works ok

Basically everything was going fine, and i was enjoying the OpenSuse experience, then downloaded djl (Games Launcher) , installed some games and found that i had a very very very bad frame rate (about 1FPS), and my GPU is a NVIDIA GTS250 (1GB), and runs most games flawlessly under m$, so i went about installing the graphics drivers for my card. I followed the instructions and was under the assumption that i installed the correct ones, but now i cannot boot into any graphical interface. I think that it should be a graphics issue, as this was one of the few things done before rebooting. I have tried booting into the normal mode, and the failsafe, I have read many other "Not booting'' posts, and have tried their solutions without success, there include: Changing the boot parameters Logging in and manually trying to boot up the gui (init 3.... init 5... etc)
When the computer tries to load up OpenSuse in normal mode, it comes up with the normal loading screen, and then about 90% of the way it stops for about 30 seconds, and then switches over to a CLI, asking for a login, going through the log a couple of things fail, did have these noted down (but cannot find and will post along with other commands that i am asked to do) I want to try and avoid a reinstall as it took me a long time to get the WiFi card working.

I've recently jump from the Ubuntu/Mint ship, and figured I've give a polished KDE distribution a shot. Of course I turned to OpenSuSE, and I love it so far. I've resisted KDE quite a lot since 4.x came out but it's really come along. Much better than the (in my opinion) monstrous disaster that Gnome has become.
Anyways, on to my problem: I've installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers via the one-click-install shown in the wiki, and that worked great. But now my resolution at boot - that is the boot/loading screen, not my desktop - is shown at a very low resolution instead of my native resolution, like it was with OpenSuSE's default open-source Nvidia driver, which I'm guessing is Nouveau. On Ubuntu, this was pretty easy to correct; all you had to do was edit /etc/default/grub and put your resolution there, and tinker with some other options so that instead of Plymouth trying to set its own, it just carries over Grub's specified resolution. But I can't seem to do that with OpenSuSE. For one, I don't see /etc/default/grub, and more than that, I don't think you guys use Plymouth. I could be wrong on that second point, though. So, how can I change the boot screen's resolution to my native resolution? I'm using the latest Stable release (11.4) and latest Nvidia drivers. Other than that, the install is new.

I have a cheapo Nvidea motherboard and an ATI 5700 graphics card. I wanted to know if there is a simple way to ensure that OS11.3 is using the ATI graphics card and radeonhd drivers instead of the Nvidea hareware+drivers. Is it necessary to blacklist the Nvidea drivers? Is there a simple YAST fix?

I'm having a few problems with XOrg freezing while playing World of Goo (not the worlds most intense game for graphics, but seemingly too much for my rig). I initially posted on the developer's forums, but they said a full X freeze wouldn't be the game. Testing with BZFlag got me a full Xorg freeze even quicker than with WoG. Later I even tried glxgears to see how well it ran and even that froze the system! My only way of recovering is SysReq-REISUB.
Specs/system details:
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (E6600)
2GB RAM
Radeon X1950XTX using the open source drivers
openSUSE 11.2 (64-bit - patched up to date and without an xorg.conf)

So, is there a fix for the huge instability with 3D graphics, or am I stuck between a rock and a hard place with the options of outdated official drivers that may not work with the latest kernels (and would need manually rebuilding even if they did) or flakey open drivers that are guaranteed to freeze at some point, it is just a matter of when?

I'm using openSUSE 11.4 on a HP Pavilion laptop, and it was working fine until last week or so. A zypper update seems to have upgraded to a package with a nasty bug though: it now boots into a black screen, instead of showing kdm.And the only option after that is to forcefully shut down the machine;ither Ctrl+Alt+F1 nor Ctrl+Backspace nor Ctrl+Alt+Del does anything. Not sure if this means the kernel hangs,or just that X blocks all keyboard input as well.The issue with powering off with the hardware button is that I don't get full log files (especially kdm.log) so it's a bit hard to investigate...I have tried many things, here are the results:
* Default radeon driver + kdm = black screen
* nomodeset + radeonhd driver + kdm = black screen [driver doesn't support HD4200 anyway]
* nomodeset + radeon driver explicitely requested + kdm = black screen

I've been having trouble booting into Ubuntu 9.10 after installing OpenSUSE 11.2. When I installed it, the opensuse setup detected the partition ubuntu was installed on and added it to the grub menu. I also have windows vista and windows 7 installed and both boot up just fine from the opensuse grub boot menu. The ubuntu installation that i have was an upgrade from 9.04 so I am not using grub2 in that installation.

I'm trying to make my iMac "Triple Boot".But using rEFIt as the boot loader, and installing Grub or Lilo makes the "Boot Menu" complicated.

I bought a Linux magazine as a Christmas present attached to it was a 8GB distro-loaded disc sporting Ubuntu 9.10 (which is already on my system,) Mandriver, and open-SUSE 11.2 which I decided to install.
Problem is, I can't get into Ubuntu anymore, where all my mail music ect is.
Ubuntu is listed with vista in window 2 of open-suse grub. When I try to boot Ubuntu I get an earlier kernel splash which is somewhat magnified and busybox v1.1.3. Vista boots OK.
Would un installing openSUSE put things back as they were? I can learn about open-SUSE using the DVD

Well, in first place let me tell you that my HDD boot sector or i dont know what is damaged, so to boot i made a boot usb with the grubdos utility, so anytime i want to boot in win7 i have to plug my usb and select win7 from it.Today i finished downloading the opensuse iso, then i mounted the image with poweriso and initialized the install, and it asked me to restart my computer, after that when i boot from my usb pendrive it goes directly to the opensuse install, but it just showme the blackscreen and nothing happens.

I have an existing WinXP install on the main drive (/dev/sda) of a Dell laptop. I installed Suse on the second (caddy tray) drive and didn't touch the existing windows partition during install.
After install completed, I found there was no boot loader entry for WinXP during startup. Only SUSE-related stuff. I opened YaST boot loader and tried creating an entry of type "other" and device of "/dev/sda1" and set this as the default entry.
The /boot/grub/menu.lst file now has an entry:

recently I've installed Opensuse 11.4 dual booting beside windows 7 . now I want to restore windows 7 boot to remove OpenSuse 11.4 ...I've tried many ways to remove grub and restore window's boot . I tried bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot but in when it comes to the last step it says (cannot find system path )I also tried nt60sys method to restore windows boot and it failed 2 sound like the grub installed is rock solid one

Just did a clean install of 11.3. After first try, system couldn't boot for hard drive. When installing a second time, I noticed that booting from a boot partition and the MBR are disabled by default. I enabled both and proceeded with the install. System now boots fine. Since the automatic partitioning created a boot partition, I'm assuming that that is where the system is booting from and I didn't need to enable booting from MBR, but am not 100% sure. So make sure to at least enable booting from a boot partition

I have a laptop with the CD-ROM apparently broken, so I installed OpenSuSE 11.4 milestone4 from USB stick .unfortunately in the end of the installation I had a GRUB configuration error (twice) . then, in the third time I removed GRUB from the installation procedureSince my other GNU / Linux is Ubuntu, I did update-grub on ubuntu, it detects the presence of OpenSuSE but it does not add it to its grub.cfgwhen I wanted to add it manually to ubuntu's GRUB, I realized that, in OpenSuSE, the /boot path was empty.My Question is: Do you know how to put the files needed to boot OpenSuSE (initrd, vmlinuz , ...) in the directory /boot without installing OpenSuSE's GRUB ?? This is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.
I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.

I'm trying to install an external graphics adapter for dual-monitor setup, and according to the installation instructions, the driver is libdlo, which requires libusb v0.13. When I follow the installation instructions, I got an error saying I don't have libusb on my OpenSUSE 11.2. The exact installation instructions is as follows:
Prerequisites:
* Install a compatible libusb version (0.13)
* on ubuntu - "sudo apt-get install libusb"
* Plug in a compatible DisplayLink USB device
To start the build process, open a shell prompt (as the user who's home directory the libdlo is installed into) and change to the libdlo directory to run
$ ./configure
$ sudo make install
$ make check
Make check will do some basic drawing on the DisplayLink device. The 'sudo make install' step will have installed libdlo.h, the main header, in your local include directory, and libdlo in your local library.(The error message comes out at $ sudo make install).
I noticed it mentioned Ubuntu, does this mean that it will only work in Ubuntu and wont work in OpenSUSE? I'm not familiar with those commands in the instructions above, I can only guess them but don't really know what each line of the instruction does exactly. If libusb also applies to OpenSUSE, how can I get it installed on my system?

I am totally new to Ubuntu but have been tinkering for a week now. Can't say I have figured a thing out, thank God for Google, Linux is just not for the novice user. I guess thats where Windows comes in but I really like the stability of Linux and the fact it is Open Source and free. Wish I was a cool programmer or someone who has worked with the OS for a while, that would make things a lot easier. Where can I study up and get a little more educated about what I am doing? Anyway hopefully someone can answer the driver question. Lastly is there anyway to get Hardware Acceleration if using an Intel i5 system?

Before we start, I wanted to say I noticed the "Ubuntu cannot fix or improve these drivers." Please read anyways.
I've tried to activate the "ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" from the System>Administration>Additional drivers and it has an error halfway through the process.
I use an ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5770 in my computer (if that helps), and Ubuntu is on my USB(8GB).
The error message I receive (after awhile of waiting) is :
SystemError: installArchives() failed
