In Ubuntu Karmic conencting a USB device causes OS to automatically mount its partitions to /media/LABEL, automatically creating proper directories which are later automatically destroyed immediately after unmounting. But what if If I manually unmount a specific partition and I would like the OS to try doing automount another time, without reconnecting the whole device (it can have other partitions in active use)? I know I can mount manually, but then I have to create a directory for the mount point and I have to remember later to remove it manually.I'd like to be done as before, with the mount point directory being automatically destroyed after unmounting - can this be done in a terminal?

Automount of external NTFS USB drive fails when using the Device Notifier. The automount facility failed after the last kernel update. A bug report was kindly filed by @saverios. The details are in the quote at the end of this notice. Pending resolution of the bug, we recommend that you install the following workaround: Open the file /etc/filesystems and add an entry for "ntfs" so the file looks similar to this (see last entry):
Code:
vfat
hfs
minix
reiserfs
ntfs .....

I tried to find an answer through searching the web and this forum, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who encountered this problem: I installed jajuk on ubuntu and it is working just great, apart from the fact that I can't get to the 'Configure device' window.Tried it through the Configuration Perspective (Devices View), there rightclicking on the icon of my device and selecting 'configure device', but nothing happens. I tried the same in the Files Perspective, where you can also get the right-click menu to select 'configure device' from. But to no avail.
Is this problem known, or does anybody know a workaround?(for example: also the 'New device' button in Devices View doesn't work, but I can work around it by using the Device Wizard) It seems to be a ubuntu/linux specific problem, as on my Mac, jajuk works fine.

When I attempt to play a store-bought dvd using mplayer I get the following error: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. I found that some folks were editing their .mplayer/gui.conf file to read vo_driver = "x11" and were having success with it. The link to that thread is here : Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. [Archive] - Ubuntu Forums my .mplayer/gui.conf file reads vo_driver="xmga" changing xmga to x11 doesn't . I'm running 64bit Karmic.

When I try to playback a sound file in aucadity just after having played one in rhythmbox or totem or vlc (or presumably any other media player), I get the following message :
"Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."
When I try again 2 or 3 seconds later, playback works fine. In fact if I wait 2 or 3 seconds after having stopped playback in rhythmbox or totem before starting playback in audacity, audacity doesn't give me the error message at all. Just wondering what causes this delay (as there are no delays when I go from rhythmbox to totem or vlc or anything else).

I rebooted my server and out of nowhere the RAID5 array won't assemble. I've tried everything I could think of to reassemble the thing. I fear that the array is ruined, but I can't imagine how. Here are various bits of information: The simplest failure (with and without partition numbers, which have not been needed in the past):
Code:
richard@nas:~$ sudo mdadm --assemble --verbose /dev/md0 /dev/sd[bcd]
mdadm: looking for devices for /dev/md0

I've bought an X10 Home Automation USB interface: the CM15.
This is the information lsusb gives:
skerit@KIP-DU-SKER:~$ lsusb Bus 008 Device 002: ID 0bc7:0001 X10 Wireless Technology, Inc. ActiveHome (ACPI-compliant)
But this tells me nothing about where the device file is! How can I find that, or create one myself?

I have a problem that I can not decide for 2 weeks. Here is what happened: On my laptop, installed just Windows XP. In the past, when I installed the second system, Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10 (for dual-boot), Ubuntu asked the administrator password for access to just Windows XP partition. I mean, that just Windows XP partitions were visible, but for the entrance (mount) needed a root password.
Now, in Ubuntu 10.04, Windows XP partition mount automatically and Ubuntu does not require the root password. I do not like it very much.
Tell me please, what do the settings at the time of installation of Ubuntu for just Windows XP that the system would be asking root password for just Windows XP partitions? Is this possible? I think - yes. Because in the past the default 9.04 and 9.10 asked for a password.
PS: I must say, as I put Ubuntu and just Windows: 1. Be installed just Windows XP, giving it 20 GB space 100 GB hard drive. </span>The remaining 80 Gigabytes leave out the implications.

today when I inserted my usbpen in the laptop, automount did not work. I tried another pen with same result. I checked with mountmanager and both pens were working and actually mounted them manually, but automount which worked perfectly yesterday now is dead.I found a workaround installing usbmount from standard repository and now automount works again but usbpens are mounted in /MEDIA/usbx instead with their names as before and I have to open a root terminal tu unmount.
Unfortunately I use a pen for backup with unison and changing the mount position I have to modify unison profile every time, which is pretty uncomfortable. The problem May arise from the fact thgat yesterday I tried to manually compile and install the canon driver for my printer and trying to solve dependencies I had to compile and install Glib-2.26 pango-1.28.3 and gtk+2.22 from their sources.I did not manage to get a working canon driver but i may have made a mess with usb automount function.program/service is responsible for usb automount in ubuntu 10.10 so that i can reinstall or reconfigure it.

My goal is to prevent gnome from mounting and opening up a file browser when any device is plugged in (USB, CD/DVD) for a Desktop User account. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook RemixI modified several settings in Nautilus (Edit --> Preferences --> Media (tab). I Selected "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion" and unchecked "Browse media when inserted".I restarted the system, but when I plug in a USB mass storage device the file browser window still appears and the device is mounted.I dug down into gconf and found the following registry keys that I believe are of interest:
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_autorun_never (checked)
Has anybody run into this problem and found a solution? Modifying the keys I mentioned above worked for everyone else that has asked the "disable automounting" question (that I've found). Some very old posts mentioned gnome-volume-manager, but it is not installed on my system.
EDIT:This seems to only happen when the Netbook Launcher is started. If Netbook Launcher is removed from the list of startup programs and the system is restarted, I can insert devices without getting a pop-up window and without the device being mounted.

My problem is that the device doesn't exist in /dev/partitions which will block my following test.BTW, I found dm-0 in /dev/partitions. Is it the same as /dev/mapper/sc0? But the device /dev/dm-0 doesn't exist!

I am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive. Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

I run ubuntu 9.10, and my wife runs winxp. I am trying to setup an automount of her storage (D) drive in my fstab. here is the line in fstab:
The share mounts with no errors, but when i go into palces and view the share, it is blank, totally empty. I can create and delete documents here, but the next time I open the share, i cant see anything. If i connect to the share using places>connect to server, everything is fine. If i connect using places, network, and browse to her machine, it works just fine.
Today i did a fresh install of karmic, installed smbfs, added the above line to fstab, same issue. I have searced and searched but I haven't found a problem exactly like this. This setup has been working fine until sometime recently. I cant be sure exactly when it stopped working, or why. The reason I need it to automount is I have several applications that point to that drive. It is worth noting i have tried several variations on the line in fstab, all with the same results.
