Slackware :: VirtualBox - Windowsxp Guest - No Sound - Unknown Audio Device - In The Windows Device Manager

Mar 11, 2010

For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

General :: Audio Device Detected But Do Not Hear Sound

Feb 15, 2011

When I run the audio configuration I get:
The following audio device was detected:
Vendor: nVidia
Model Coporation GF100 High Definition Audio Controller
Module snd-hda-intel
but I do not hear sound.

The ALSA driver version is 1.0.14rc3
Lib package is: 1.0.17.-1.e15
Utils package is: 1.0.17-1.e15

The sound log has:
class: AUDIO
bus: PCI
detached: 0
driver: snd-hda-intel
desc: "nVidia Corporation GF100 High Definition Audio Controller" .....

The audio configuration sound test and the answer to the question No returns a message that says: automatic detection of sound card did not work. I am not sure what else is needed to diagnose the problem.

Slackware :: How To Disable HP Device Manager

May 2, 2010

I've always run as root on Slackware, but having done away with Ubuntu for now, all of my machines including the family desktop are running Slackware. There have been several ups and downs and the last one that I know of (for now) is the HP Device Manager. It doesn't run as root so I've never noticed that it drastically slows down printing via a shared printer. Disabled the system just sends it's requests to the samba/cups server and starts printing instantly. The HP Device Manager seems to go through an intialization step each time that takes several seconds before I can even hit the "print" button.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound To Usb Audio Device Cuts Out After A Few Minutes?

Mar 27, 2010

i am using ubuntu studio karmic and i have a digitech vx400 audio effects pedal which serves as an audio in/out midi in/out device via usb. i can sucessfully set it as the system sound device in system>preferences>sound for both input and output. but, when i play audio through it it only works for a few minutes before the sound stops completely. if i leave the system settings set to the internal sound card and configure jack audio connection kit to go to the usb device, i get the same results on the usb sound. a few minutes of playback at the most.i can restart sound with either "pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start" or "alsactl init" in either situation. just requires restarting the programs. same results after restarting. i think this is alsa related as i have both the system sound and jack using the alsa driver, but i don't truly understand the relationship between pulseaudio and alsa.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound & Audio Device Doesn't Get Recognized In Karmic?

Mar 7, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop then immediately upgraded to Karmic 9.10. Pulseaudio installed by default. There's no sound although the mute button is not checked and the volume slide control is at medium. lspci gives:

00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies IXP SB4x6 Hi Definition audio controller (rev01)

System >Preferences >Sound >Hardware tab: blank window "choose a device to configure" Output tab: "dummy" output stereo

So, it appears that somehow the audio device controller in my laptop is not recognized or its driver disabled, possibly by pulseaudio. Sound works fine in Windows 7 part of this dual-booted laptop.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Alternate Sound Configuration - Computer Send The Audio Out The USB Cable To The Device?

Feb 5, 2010

I have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.

The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?

I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Record Sound In Kubuntu 10.04 - Default Device For Audio Recording Does Not Work

Jun 28, 2010

I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.

The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.

Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:

- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default

The only one that works is hw:0,2.

But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:

Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:

- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)

- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)

Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?

All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.

I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Mounting DVDRW (SR0 Unknown Device)

Nov 14, 2010

Having some troubles mounting my DVD-RW after a reinstall of ubuntu. Now using 10.10.
Code:
root@Johnsky:/# wodim --devices
wodim: Overview of accessible drives (1 found) :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
0 dev='/dev/scd0'rwrw-- : 'HL-DT-ST' 'DVDRAM GH20NS10'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So there's my scd0 sitting pretty.
Trying to mount it.

Code:
root@Johnsky:/# mount -a /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0
mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device
root@Johnsky:/#
sr0?

Code:
root@Johnsky:/# ls -l /dev/
total 0 .....

Lets try mounting sr0 directly instead.
Code:
root@Johnsky:/# mount -a /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0
mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device
sr0 is still an unknown device.

I'm thinking when I reinstalled Ubuntu, it made some screwy links between devices. But I have no idea how to resolve this... and there's no point in my mind to adding the DVD-RW to /etc/fstab until I can actually mount it manually to know it mounts successfully. Back when I installed Ubuntu 9.x on this machine, I never had any of these issues. It picked up the DVD-RW automatically, appended it to fstab during installation, and done. But 10.10 seems to be having some troubles my 9.x installation didn't.

Slackware - 13.1 "VLC Failed To Initialize Sound Output Device" If Opened After Firefox

Aug 7, 2010

I've been having a recurring problem on Slackware64 13.1. If I open VLC (or any other media player available for Slackware) before I open Firefox, then my sound works 100% and there's never any problem, however, if I open Firefox first, and there happens to be a flash video loading, then any other media player (mplayer-plugin, Amarok or VLC) will fail to play sound. VLC tells me:

Quote: Potential ALSA version problem: VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any). update alsa-lib to version 1.0.24 or higher to try to fix this issue. Now, I'm happy to do that if it will actually fix the problem, though I'll have to figure out how seeing as I'm something of a n00b. The thing is that I've not really done anything to alsa except run alsaconf on my first boot, so I'm not sure if that's really the problem I've been using Slackware64 for a few months now, I'm on my first ever install and for the most part I'm loving it. Been working through the little things that have been annoying me, and for the most part I've managed to find solutions either by reading the Slackbook, by browsing LQ or by doing a quick Google search. However, I can't seem to find any reference to this specific problem anywhere and I'm not sure what I should do.

Now, my problem is I can't connect my USB cdwriter to my virtual slackware or share folders in the Win7 install with the virtual slackware. I read a few of tutorials on the Oracle VBox website, and several of the ones here on LQ, and none of them seem to solve my problems.

General :: Cannot Ssh Into Ubuntu Guest On Virtualbox 4.0.4 On Windows 7

May 15, 2011

I have an Ubuntu guest installed on Virtualbox 4.0.4 running on Windows 7 Home Premium. I have two firewall rules for Vbox which allow any, any inbound for both TCP and UDP and those rules have edge traversal enabled. I have host ports 9080 and 9022 forwarded to 80 and 22 on the guest. The Win7 box is on an Ethernet connection

After some testing, I have a netbook with a Wifi connection and Ubuntu netbook remix which cannot make an ssh connection to the Ubuntu guest.

But, the same netbook can telnet to port 9080 on the Win7 machine's address and successfully connect to a web server running on port 80 of the Ubuntu guest.

In order to check this out, I ran initctl stop ssh on the Ubuntu guest, verified thagt port 22 had no listeners, and ran ssh with /usr/sbin/sshd -d -e. This shows various bits of debug info from the console. Then I ran Putty on the win7 machine to connect to port 9022 on it's own IP address (that it got from DHCP) and made a successful connection to the guest Ubuntu.

The variable that I don't know much about is the landlord's cable router setup, but I can't figure out why that would block packets to 9022 but not packets to 9080.

Slackware :: Install 64-bit Virtualbox Guest Additions Or Change Resolution In XFCE4?

Jul 1, 2011

When I try to change the resolution, it only shows 800X600 and 640X480 or something similar, nothing regarding a custom resolution. When I use the "Install Guest Additions" it won't mount because of some error, and so I can't open it, and even if I could mount and open it *I've tried it in other distros that don't automatically install it for you* I have no idea what to use. I've tried all of the .sh, even the autorun.sh and giving it executable permissions, and it STILL doesn't work. Perhaps I'm missing something, or there's a documentation out there that I can't find, but I can never get them to work. How can I fix this problem? I know in sbopkg, there's 32-bit Virtualbox Guest Additions but that doesn't work. The reason why I installed the 64-bit one is because I don't have 6 CDs to spare and I'm almost out of bandwidth and it has to last me a week. *I think around 200GBs out of 250GBs taken up so far, or more*
