Ubuntu :: Error Opening/initializing The Selected Video_out (-vo) Device?
Jan 8, 2010
When I attempt to play a store-bought dvd using mplayer I get the following error: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. I found that some folks were editing their .mplayer/gui.conf file to read vo_driver = "x11" and were having success with it. The link to that thread is here : Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. [Archive] - Ubuntu Forums my .mplayer/gui.conf file reads vo_driver="xmga" changing xmga to x11 doesn't . I'm running 64bit Karmic.
while opening any video with gmplayer it gives the fatal Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (vo) device. while playing with mplayer it doesnot goto full screen video output mode while pressing F.
I have installed slackware 13.1 on my friends laptop. Its an msi laptop . dual core 2ghz, 1gb ram nividia 9000 series.etc. everything is fine but after installing mplayer codecs from slackbuild and also xvidcore, i am not able to play avi files in mplayer. It is giving me a fatal error saying. error initializing -vo device. i tried to change the video driver. it was by default xv then i tried X11(xvid) then open gl and open gl with max textures . when i made it to open gl with max textures the video out came but it is lagging with the audio.
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.
When I try to playback a sound file in aucadity just after having played one in rhythmbox or totem or vlc (or presumably any other media player), I get the following message :
"Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."
When I try again 2 or 3 seconds later, playback works fine. In fact if I wait 2 or 3 seconds after having stopped playback in rhythmbox or totem before starting playback in audacity, audacity doesn't give me the error message at all. Just wondering what causes this delay (as there are no delays when I go from rhythmbox to totem or vlc or anything else).
Well I recently tried syncing music to my iPod touch with rhythmbox and it keeps telling me the following: There is not enough space on the device to transfer the selected music, playlists. This is not true as I only have 3.2GB of music and 5.7GB space remaining on the ipod as shown below:Can anybody explain what is going on and why it wont let me sync ipod?

I have been trying to install pidgin via one click from the software sources and I can download the file fine but whey yaST2 starts, it hangs for a while and I get error. Also I can't get any updates as the same issue appears.

I am new to Linux, how to install codecs, as when I am trying to install I am finding this error. An error occurred while initializing the software repository. Details: Url scheme is a required component and sometime like repository can be loaded.
I have kubuntu 10.10 when i insert a pen drive, i cannot navigate in the dirs from a shell, but i have to open dolphin before and then i have to click on the /media/$newdir and then i can navigate... is there a way to automount without opening dolphin?
I have a multi-user machine with several network interfaces (Ethernet, if that matters). I wish to grant selected users, or groups, full access to selected network interfaces (including ability to adjust IP address and to bind to low ports, but *only* on those interfaces). It is important to me that an user/group does not such full control over other interfaces. Granting partial, or temporary, root permissions is OK; it's a friendly environment. How do I go about it?System: Linux 2.6.recent; usual Debian setup (can be adjusted if needed).
I tried to find an answer through searching the web and this forum, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who encountered this problem: I installed jajuk on ubuntu and it is working just great, apart from the fact that I can't get to the 'Configure device' window.Tried it through the Configuration Perspective (Devices View), there rightclicking on the icon of my device and selecting 'configure device', but nothing happens. I tried the same in the Files Perspective, where you can also get the right-click menu to select 'configure device' from. But to no avail.
Is this problem known, or does anybody know a workaround?(for example: also the 'New device' button in Devices View doesn't work, but I can work around it by using the Device Wizard) It seems to be a ubuntu/linux specific problem, as on my Mac, jajuk works fine.
i tried to install some themes and after the installation, I'm having problems on my "Places" menu(from the upper left next to Applications). The thing is, when I try to(from up to my drive letters) select from the said menu, I'm always being redirected to the themes settings with an error "There was an error installing the selected file."
I 've reinstalled XP partition on my ubuntu system 8.10 ,After that i reinstalled grub using live CD ubuntu 9.04
With the following commands:
but when i restarted the system i got the grub menu .. but when i select ubuntu i got the following error message: " error 17 .. can not mount selected partition "
I've tried everything to solve this, been browsing the forums for the last 2 days and no solution has worked. So I got a new netbook (Samsung n150 dated 03/2011) it had ubuntu 10.10 installed but I already use ubuntu on my macbookso I'm trying out knoppix, I booted it from usb and ran the HD installer, it gets through all that and then installs grub ok, but when I reboot I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"Things I already tried:*Grub setup (grub, root (hd0,1), setup (hd0), quit) and every variation.*I tried removing the usb and setting the HDD back to first boot in the bios andthen changing the menu.lst accordingly, still I get error 17.Below is the information just after boot with the usb still plugged in and set as first boot in bios.fdisk -l

Error 18 - Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS
I am running Jaunty Jackalope on a new machine and after a recent update I got the following message when trying to reboot:
Error 18 - Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS
After reading some of the info on Grub error 18 I decided to create a separate boot partition, as suggested. However, when trying to use Gparted from the live CD to create some space ahead of /sda1, Gparted would run for a while and then crash. The crash message says:
"e2fsck crashed with SIGSEGV in qsort" So now I am stuck, unable to boot from HDD and unable to create new partitions (the other partitions on the disk work fine with Gparted). Could all of this be due to corrupt /sda1 partition?
I am having problems with grub. Originally I was having trouble installing Service Pack 2 for vista and I made the fool's mistake of changing the active partition in disk management from the boot partition to the windows partition. This blew up grub. After restarting I was dumped at the grub terminal i.e.
grub>
so I thought okay, I will just reinstall grub. I ran setup (hdx,y) but now when I restart first of all the splash screen is different, rather then the blue background with the big words in white, fedora 11, it's black and I get a error saying unable to read any images. I can see the different OS' I have on the grub screen but attempting to load any of them gives me
error 17 cannot mount selected partition.
I am currently running the Fedora 11 xfce spin live cd. From the terminal here, here is some information. sda3 is my fedora 11 partition I am not sure maybe it is because of ext4 but I can't seem to mount it using mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/xxxxx.
[root@localhost grub]# fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x72edceee Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
From what I can figure out, grub can not figure out which disk has my root file system. I checked the partition labels and they match the UUID that are in my fstab.
I installed Mac OS X 10.6, Windows 7 Ultimate, and made 4 partitions.OSX and 7 installed fine, but when I tried to install SUSE, it stopped at 92%.I get this error:
I would like to add the option mem=4096M to make some software works. but as long as I try with more than 512M, I have the error: error 28 selected item cannot fit into memory.
Plan to use GRUB for multiple booting to select the OS but only with luck have I got it partially to work. Windows 98 and Puppy 431 O.K on first HDD but Puppy 421 on second HDD /dev/sdb1 stops at error 21.
i ran into this issue only because i wanted to learn. I was reading the book, linux troubleshooting and decided to give it a try.
1) I went to /boot/ and moved vmlinuz (kernel file) to my home directory. (/root/) 2) I booted, it didnt boot (as expected) and now the troubleshooting part begins. 3) i entered to grub config mode using c 4) When i press root (hd0, (tab) it gave me 2 partitions. hd0 which is my boot partition hd1 which is my '/' partition. Please keep in mind its LVM and not a physical partition 5) If i do this, root (hd0,1), and press boot, it gives the following error Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
During my research i found that, LVM is not supported by grub, so kindly confirm me this ? is this the reason i am not able to access my root partition ? i am doing this on vmware so no issues, but just for the sake of learning, can someone tell me some way of restoring it without using any rescure disk (livecd, liveusb etc) ?
I have a Dell VOSTRO laptop that I use for windows Vista. I have an old disk drive that I put into a USB case and now I want to use that for a Debian system. I do not want to install grub on my laptops HDD, if I do I need to have the USB HDD plugged in everytime I boot and i find that a real pain. I installed Debian on the USB drive with no problem and when it asked where I wanted to install GRUB I picked the USB drive ( I think ). Now when I interupt the boot and tell it to boot from the USB drive grub comes up with the correct menu but when I pick Debian I get the following messages:
Booting 'Debian GNU/Linux Kernel 2.6.26-2-amd64' root (hd1,0) Filesystem type unknown partition type 0xde kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-amd64 root=/dev/sdb1 ro quiet Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
I dualboot Ubuntu and Fedora in one hard drive. Below are the scenario.
First, installed Ubuntu 10.4 on the entire disk (40GiB of size). Then, shrink the Ubuntu installation to equal size to free up space for fedora.
Second, installed Fedora 13 using the option "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout". After the successful installation fdisk -l shows,
Code: # fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4865 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
