When I attempt to play a store-bought dvd using mplayer I get the following error: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. I found that some folks were editing their .mplayer/gui.conf file to read vo_driver = "x11" and were having success with it. The link to that thread is here : Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. [Archive] - Ubuntu Forums my .mplayer/gui.conf file reads vo_driver="xmga" changing xmga to x11 doesn't . I'm running 64bit Karmic.

View 13 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to playback a sound file in aucadity just after having played one in rhythmbox or totem or vlc (or presumably any other media player), I get the following message :
"Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."
When I try again 2 or 3 seconds later, playback works fine. In fact if I wait 2 or 3 seconds after having stopped playback in rhythmbox or totem before starting playback in audacity, audacity doesn't give me the error message at all. Just wondering what causes this delay (as there are no delays when I go from rhythmbox to totem or vlc or anything else).
I have installed slackware 13.1 on my friends laptop. Its an msi laptop . dual core 2ghz, 1gb ram nividia 9000 series.etc. everything is fine but after installing mplayer codecs from slackbuild and also xvidcore, i am not able to play avi files in mplayer. It is giving me a fatal error saying. error initializing -vo device. i tried to change the video driver. it was by default xv then i tried X11(xvid) then open gl and open gl with max textures . when i made it to open gl with max textures the video out came but it is lagging with the audio.

i used to be able to watch music videos from a local radio station website using firefox and mplayer with fc11. maybe the solution is to upgrade to fc12, since it seems to work fine on the pc with fc12, but maybe the problem is something easy to fix, and i can wait awhile before getting everything up on fc12.. -( also, with fc11, i can play the same videos using a newly installed version of google chrome. i am just trying to find out what causes this type of error and how i can fix it. if i go to www.kzsn.com and select the "on demand" tab, then select a video, i should see mplayer open up and the video play - i don't get the black box and no video, no sound.. as stated above, this works fine using google chrome, or using another pc with fc12. this website also has some videos that play via flashplayer. they also did not play in fc11 with firefox, but i was recently able to get them to work by downgrading to a previous version of shockwave (found that in another post). not sure if this has anything to do with the problem i am having, but thought i would mention it, just in case.. only other thing i can't seem to do with any release of fc (maybe linux in general) is watch movie trailers from the apple website (which used to work fine) - was wondering if anyone else can with fc11 or fc12?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to find an answer through searching the web and this forum, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who encountered this problem: I installed jajuk on ubuntu and it is working just great, apart from the fact that I can't get to the 'Configure device' window.Tried it through the Configuration Perspective (Devices View), there rightclicking on the icon of my device and selecting 'configure device', but nothing happens. I tried the same in the Files Perspective, where you can also get the right-click menu to select 'configure device' from. But to no avail.
Is this problem known, or does anybody know a workaround?(for example: also the 'New device' button in Devices View doesn't work, but I can work around it by using the Device Wizard) It seems to be a ubuntu/linux specific problem, as on my Mac, jajuk works fine.
I'm playing a little bit with OpenCV but the webcam that i have on my desktop isn't app-friendly... so i could not get it working with OpenCV, it's a 0ac8:301b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. ZC0301 WebCam and it worked out of the box with Cheese and after a little bit of tweak i get it working with camorama also.But some apps, like Skype and OpenCV demos doesn't work, believe me, i tried everything to get it working, i tried even upgrading to a very new kernel.
So i had the idea to create a "virtual" video device and using some app that can read the wcam i could print the wcam's output on such device, which should be compatible and app-friendly, so i would use that device always.
Mencoder has not a support for my webcam.
However "

I'm having a problem running Mplayer in Ubuntu 9.1. I've installed and uninstalled several times. Mplayer refuses to open from the applications menu.n I attempt to open from terminal it comes up with the following: mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libavcodec.so.52: file too short I've also tried other players such as Gnome Mplayer to play the video and it plays really fast with no audio or video. This has really been the only problem i've run into since switching from windows to linux two weeks ago.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Debian Testing with Debian Multimedia Sid repos. The current Mplayer (3:1.0~rc4+svn20110308-0.0) seems to be broken - I can't encode AAC to AC3 on-the-fly anymore. View 3 Replies View RelatedMy system is playing CD's fine but I just tried a DVD (non-BluRay) and I get that error! I have googled about and though I already had the ubuntu-restricted-packages I didn't have all the gstreamer0.10plugins-bad installed (as seems to be the recommended fix). I now have them and MoviePlayer still gives the same error. I also want BluRay's to be playable and I was investigating that when I thought I would check whether normal DVD's were still working (I'm not sure whether I've tried a DVD since I upgraded to MM). The DVD mounts ok and appears on my desktop with the title.

I am trying to take advantage of VDPAU for playing video files with my ASRock ION 330. As far as I know, MPlayer and VLC both include VDPAU support. Ok then, I managed to make MPlayer work from the command line:
mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau ./filename.mkv
In this way it plays a 720p content smoothly, with under 10% CPU use. Great!The problem is when I try to make this permanent, i.e., configuring the files ~/.mplayer/config and ~/.mplayer/gui.conf.This is what I have in there:
config
======
vo=vdpau,xv,
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,
[code]....
But still, when I open MPlayer from the menu, no matter what file I try to open it gives this ugly message:Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. With regard to VLC, I had no luck, although I am using the latest "1.0.3 Goldeneye" version, I don't know how to make use of VDPAU.
Running Lucid Lynx. VLC works fine but Xvmc output uses less CPU on my PIII 750 laptop and isn't supported by VLC. I installed Mplayer but I can't play anything from the Mplayer GUI. I get the message "FATAL: Could not initialize video filters (-vf) or video output (-vo)". The interface is all black so I can't see the controls. I installed Gnome Mplayer GUI and now I have different problems. Playing video files, including VOB files from a DVD works fine. Trying to play a DVD with or without menues does not. I followed the instructions at URL.... What could be wrong?

I'm trying to use mplayer to stream some content from the net to my desktop. This worked fine the first time I did it (though failed dismally on all subsequent occasions. Now, the first umpteen times, I was behind a proxy. Now I am not behind a proxy, but mplayer still looks for the proxy settings. Why? I have changed the proxty settings in the network proxy (applied globally), in Firefox and every where else I can think of. I use the following command:
Code:
mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile ~/Desktop/<desired_filename>.avi http://<source>.avi
and I'm told in response
Code:

What gives? Why is mplayer trying to use a proxy, and how can I tell it not to?
