I'm having a problem with the authentication window, if I want to change system properties. There are two buttons cancel and authenticate, but nothing happens when I push authenticate.
View 4 Repliessince yesterday when I open up an explorer style window, say I browsed folders in Gnome for each folder it opens a new window. However; when I go to change it so it does it in the same window either through edit properties or system/preferences/file management it does not open and instead a bugzilla window opens as it crashes (taking my desktop with it until it refreshes)

When right clicking a song in Rhythmbox and selecting properties I should be able to change the name of the album for example. However I am able to select the content of the field I am not able to alter it.

I know how to add programs to the side bar but can't figure out how to change the top bar menus. When I ran 32bit thru a windows vm I had a top bar where I could access the programs and no side bar. I liked it better than the 2 bar setup in my 64bit wubi install. Can it be changed?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn gnome-network-properties I've set up two proxy locations: default and remote.
It's a bit of a fag having to change between them via the gui depending on where I am. Can the proxy be changed by command line because then I can set up a script to use the right proxy automatically? - e.g. use remote proxy if my mobile is connected via usb.
Had a google but don't think gnome-network-properties has command line options so I might be approaching this from the wrong tack.
Usually I try to fix things on my own, which btw always ends up failing So the other day I got an update of some packages, I installed them and restarted the pc. When I was back in ubuntu, the speaker icon on my panel was gone, and so was the audio settings for pulse too. When I went to system > pref > sound I got an error.So now I decided to ditch pulse. Pulse have always given me problems btw. I installed alsa, but couldn't get the shortcuts for up, down and mute to work. This is important to me because idk where the audio button on my laptop is (ASUS). So I tweaked around for awhile and decided to go for OSS since it's the only option that will allow me to record both out and ingoing audio, which is an option I use a lot. So I tweaked around and all that stuff, and now I'm very frustrated.
I have come to the conclusion that my audio card is unrecognized now. I think I have every single ALSA / OSS driver, plugin and codec installed. Ok here's the audio card info I got from the command lspci | grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Cougar Point High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05) 01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation Device 0be9 (rev a1) So the card is some how recognized by the system but not according to gstreamer-properties.
This might seem like an odd problem, but I can't find gstreamer-properties on my system. Also I can't find a package that provides it. I have tried the following
gstreamer
gstreamer-tools
gnome-media
control-center
control-center-extras
control-center-filesystem
None of those seem to provide the file. can someone who has gstreamer-properties do a

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
I'm brand new to Linux and Ubunto 10.04.On the menu bar at the top of my desktop I seem to have attracted some kind of bug!The Log Out Symbol repeats itself across almost the entire menu bar and I cannot remove it. If I remove other buttons from the menu the space is immediately replaced by more Log Out Buttons.When I hover on the icon I get the message 'Log out of this session to log in as a different user' and when I right-cllick to click on 'Remove from Panel' or 'Move' nothing happens.It is not possible to right-click on another part of the menu bar to change the Menu Properties.

2) /etc/login.defs - PASS* fields
I know the fields that need to be changed but what I could not find was
a) commands that change these options similar to useraddusermod and so on but those which can change system wide settings
b) API that can change these options (C API)
I have almost accepted that there in fact aren't such things. You have to manually update the files. I would prefer not though.So I am asking here as last attempt to find such commandsAPI. Please let me know if they are available.

Every time I need root privileges and I am asked to authenticate (i.e. Update Manager, mounting a partition, etc), the password window comes up, shakes and immediately closes, leaving me with no chance to enter a password. View 4 Replies View RelatedAm trying to set up a new system but am getting some strange behavoir. I've administered an Irix system before. I have opensuse 11.3 installed with gnome running. When i enter a bad user id in the windows login screen, the bad authentication causes the x window manager to crash and leaves the system in the ascii terminal mode login. I then have to login as root and do an init 3 , then init 5 to get the x server started again an get the windows login started. Has any one seen this behavior before and how can i fix this. Been hunting through /etc/X11/xdm to see what startup scripts could be causing this.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install an emerald theme while maintaining the Compiz desktop effects. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lynx and have installed Emerald Theme Manager and Compiz. I was looking for a good theme to go with my background/laptop and took a liking to this one I'm sure this is a stupid question but how do I install this? By following the link to the rgba true theme, there are "instructions" on how to install it, but I just cant figure it out. I have the window borders setup but I'm stumped on how to get the transparent black window backgrounds(by window backgrounds I mean everything inside the frame). The frame works fine but it looks terrible with the solid white window interior. Can someone tell me how to get this working? I have already tried Compiz opacity (terrible, makes everything unreadable). Every background setting I see is RGB, no transparent setting. If it helps, I'm trying to get everything ~75% transparent, no solid colors.
