I was having a problem with the keyring asking me for a password after I changed my user password. I googled it and found that since the password changed, I will get asked for the keyring password until I delete ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring. What happened was that I wasn't paying attention that you had to generate a new keyring password before rebooting.
Now, whenever I try to login via gdm, I get this message: error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure
How do I get it working again? I can still login from the terminal.
Tried to make the /etc/pam.d/gdm mod to auto-auth keyring. Now when I boot up it says "error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure" preventing me from logging in.
So I read that I can enter recovery mode by pressing Esc on boot up to boot to a root shell. However no amount of button mashing Esc on boot up seems to have any effect, always bringing me to the graphical login. I could boot to a liveUSB but this has all started when I got to work this morning, and don't have a USB key handy, and I'd like to get this sorted so I can do some work today!
And why does the /etc/pam.d/gdm tweak seem to be causing so many issues (googling reveals the technique has a lot of other users finding the same problem as me, however they seem to be able to get to recovery mode)?
EDIT: If I hold down or mash Esc fast enough, the computer will beep at me once or twice, but nothing changes on screen
EDIT 2: Ok found out that holding SHIFT is the new way of doing things, reverted pam.d/gdm to the backup and things are back to normal!
I made a system in CentOS5.5. I used Tomcat6 and PostgreSQL. But I couldn't enter my system. There are some error. And I don't understand what kind of error this. JDBCExceptionReporter.logExceptions(100) | SQL Error: 0, SQLState: null JDBCExceptionReporter.logExceptions(101) | Cannot create PoolableConnectionFactory (FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "postgres") "postgres" is username. Is anybody knows anything about this error message.
Fedora 10 64bit install from DVD. Working my way through the how to's, this is my first linux experience! When I choose the user switcher > other OR system > Logout user > Switch user my system goes to a blank screen and I can only get it back by using the reset switch (or power off)If user1 logs out, user2 can then log on and vise versa.I can go to applications > terminal as user1 and su user2 no problem ( and back to user1)but if I use the user switcher = problem.I am fairly sure that the users are set up correctly, they all work individually.I searched the forums and there seems to be no current similar problems mentioned. My system is a gigabyte GA K8VM800M (onboard graphics and sound) AMD Sempron 1GB ram 40GB HD I used the DVD to install on to previously used HD with no other OS on it, I chose the 'use the whole hard drive for fedora' option and had no reported problems with the install.Have I got something set up incorrectly? or where should a look for help on this.
I have been messing with F12 look & feel and am seeking a way to edit the User Switch Applet so that the log-off and shutdown features in the System menu will be found in the User Switch Applet. (This is a feature in Karmic 9.10 and I really like it.)
I'm having a weird issue with Lucid. On startup the power/user switcher applet doesn't load correctly, instead I see the me menu applet twice. I don't think I'm explaining this very well, so here's a screenshot.
On Ubuntu server 10.10, with a relay smtp server with authentication via postfix; I keep getting 535: Incorrect authentication data. I'm sure my username and password is correct. Heres how I set up postfix: I created a file called smarthosts.conf in my /etc/postfix/ directory that contains the following:
[Code].....
my server uses plain text authentication on port 25. I would like to use security like SSL, but this particular server is unsecured.
I've been testing Lucid and realized the other day that there is no "guest" option in the user switcher applet. I can select other existing accounts from the applet without any problems but I've looked everywhere and can't find a way to start a guest session.I've Googled around and can't seem to find any helpful information.
Empathy will start up fine, but if I initiate a conversation (or if someone IMs me) then Empathy will crash. Has anyone else had this problem, or knows how to fix it? If not, is there another comparable IM service that integrates with the memenu as well as Empathy?
How can I use my computer to record a telephone conversation? I'm not talking about skype or voip; I want to link my 'puter to my standard landline. Here's the scenario: I make occasional programmes for the local community radio station, pre-recording them on my computer, using a fairly decent microphone (via a mixer and pre-amp, feeding into the line-in socket on the sound card). Recording and editing is handled with Audacity, and, despite the hardware being basic stuff, I get pretty good spoken-word audio quality like this.
I want to be able to include telephone interviews with guests, preferably recorded using my mic/mixer setup so that at least my half of the conversation is of the usual studio quality. How can I achieve this? Is a voice modem the thing to use (and if so, could someone walk me through how to use one under Ubuntu, please), or are there other hardware or software solutions? The landline in question is a BT-type here in the UK.
How to control a windows system by using linux server i know linux is a cross flatfarm. But how to Authenticate windows system like in windows we use AD for user authentication.
I have a VPN account and have been running it perfectly on windows without any problems but I deleted my windows OS because I wanted to force myself to learn a Linux OS. I have installed the configuration package through the terminal and have followed this guide exactly
[URL]
The VPN was giving me a no secrets error to start off but I managed to fix and now it connects for about 40seconds but whilst it is connected, the internet is completely useless and I can't get on anything... It then disconnects after 40 seconds saying it has failed.
I installed firestarter to see if I could tweak it there to work but it was beyond me and I could also see from the data being sent that none of it was going through tap0 whilst the VPN was connected..
I am currently responsible for administering a shared Ubuntu machine with several unrelated users. Some of these users own multiple accounts and would like to "chown" files between them. Currently, I must handle such requests manually, and this is inconvenient.
I am looking for a way to allow non-root users to chown files with authentication (i.e. prompt for the password of the user to which ownership is being set to). This would prevent an exploit such as:
I just finished following the instructions found here to install FreeNX on my ubuntu 10.04 server. It went smoothly, just used the default keys.Once I had that all set up I scrolled down and followed the instructions to set up the client and that went fine as well.My problem is with actually using the program. When I try to log in I get the error "Authentication failed for user tony" (my username). Do I need to change anything in the configuration other than setting it to use gnome and putting in the host address?oes it make a difference that my ssh settings only allow rsa login? I logged into the server with ssh to see if that helped but it did not. I even tried using the ssh key with the FreeNX Client but that did not work
How is the super user determined for the dialog box that pops up when trying to perform administrative tasks, "An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges. Authentication as the super user is required to perform this action."? Does it always ask for the password of the default user created during the OS install, or should it prompt for the current user's password if that person is an administrator?I use likewise-open for windows domain authentication, so I typically log in as a windows user that likewise-open has added to the list of users on this system. I have given this user sudo access and added the user to all the same groups as the default user, yet whenever I perform an administrative task in gnome I am prompted for the password of the default user. Is this normal? It seems like the behavior would be to ask for the current user's password if that user is an administrator, and if so what determines that the current user is an administrator?
I want to use nomachine, instead of freenx, and well it isn't working. SSH server works and all, because freenx works., same for neatx. But I hear with nomachine you can see the main display of the computer? Is this true? Well one way to find out, but whenever I try to login I get: Authentication failed for user x. I don't know why, neatx and freenx worked, even x2go, but not this.
when I click on "Users and Groups" the dialogue box shows up, but I'm unable to make any changes because I'm not prompted for authentication (the "add", "delete" etc., buttons are grayed out). I'm using 10.10.
how can i provide authentication to the user, when he submits his name n password on the internet browser?im unable to fetch username n password from browser?
I was trying to configure user authentication in SSH using certificate method. As u all know the usual way of authentication is using the ssh-keygen method. But i want the another method where we create a certificate key and send it to the CA, which signs it and send back etc etc.I cannot find any unique procedure in the net to configure this method.
I basically want to record audio streams. The most useful purpose is to record conversations on skype (and other applications). This is for a legitimate reason if anyone is worried; I often have long conference calls on skype (an another voip collaborative tool called EVO), and a recording would be a nice way to keep minutes and participate in the working meeting. I'm not worried about capturing video yet. The audio is the important for me for now. This is going to display my woeful ignorance of Linux audio systems. I'm running F12 x86_64 on a Dell inspiron laptop. I believe that the system is using the PulseAudio sound server.
I thought something like: ffmpeg -f oss -i /dev/dsp sample.mp3 Could work, but I don't have a /dev/dsp. I think these are in a separate directory /dev/snd; however the content of this directory is not clear which device is the appropriate one. I tried pointing ffmpeg to a few of them, but it resulted in errors thus: /dev/snd/hwC0D0: no such file or directory I know it's there because [tab] complete. I found another alternative which uses parec. parec --format=s16le --rate=44100 -channels=2 sample.raw
Unfortunately this only records the microphone input and not everything else going through my sound server. I wish I could find the link again, but there was a third alternative which required writing a bit of C code. I thought that could be a nice little project to better acquaint myself with this stuff.
I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Early 2008 Macbook Pro and am trying to initiate some form of right click functionality. A mapped key is fine. Apple's ctrl+click is fine too. I do use a usb or bluetooth mouse quite often, but I really need right click functionality for those times that I just grabbed the laptop and ran with it.
I've browsed the forums, ran into a couple of solutions, but they were a bit older and I could not get them to work properly. Also a hindrance here is my relative unfamiliarity with Linux/Ubuntu.
My work has got a new Sharp MX-1800N network printer. The setup requires user authentification, one password for printing b&w, another for printing color. However when they try to set up my netbook running ubuntu desktop 10.04 they don't get it to prompt for a password, which makes the printer reject the printout. How do you fix this?
I have installed Samba 1.2.63-0Ubuntu4 (system-config-samba) on Ubuntu 10.04, and it has been working without any issues for a few months now, but now the username/password authentication does not work anymore and I can't figure out why
I have tried changing username/password(thinking maybe i forgot the correct credentials) and the new username/pass does not work either.
I have also tried "sudo service smbd restart" in terminal to restart samba but this does not work either
I can still see visible shares when browsing server via "network neighborhood" on XP,,, and can access the shares that do NOT require authentication
username/password are made up of standard characters as well
I'm trying to utilize my company's IT orginazation's LDAP service (running on some sort of windows) for authenticating users on an Ubuntu box.Another group has done something similar for CENTOS; I've used their ldap.conf as a reference as well as ap-server.html (LDAP Authentication section)I can't get it to work. When I try to connect as my corporate user I see this in auth.log:
Code: Jan 14 14:32:24 Algalon sshd[7062]: nss_ldap: could not connect to any LDAP server as cn=ldapquery2,cn=Users,dc=<companyname>,dc=com - Can't contact LDAP server
Im using CenOs 5 and have install a mail system(postfix+dovecot),when I trying to enable selinux for enforcing mode and i'm have some issue, the user authentication failed. How can i to fix this problem?
I checked relay system using IP address it working gr8, but I want to implement user based authorization in relay server. but no idea where to make changes in sendmail.mc.. and my outlook asking for password again and again..whats role of openssl in user based authentication ?
