Ubuntu :: Updates Hang At "authentication" Step

Feb 20, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu using Wubi on my x64 Dell laptop. I logged in, and tried updating to the latest version. When I type in my password, however, the password box disappears, but the window doesn't change. It's still responsive, but clicking buttons doesn't do anything, and I've tried waiting for a few minutes.

Edit: It hasn't been working for two days, but now it's suddenly working again, without my trying to do anything.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Updates Choked System?

Jan 23, 2011

I am looking for ideas or an explanation of what happened to this system during an update. Here are the details: I had a fresh version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in its own partition and it seemed to be running OK. I decided to get all of the updates for it so I fired up the Update Manager. I decided to get everything so I left all of the selections checked. Then I started it updating and observed that was going to download more than 200 MB so I went away for a while.

In normal operation I get about 80K bytes/sec download speed due to my internet connection speed. This allows the system to loaf along and the CPUs typically report only about 2 to 7 percent usage.

I had a few other things running before I started the updates: a terminal, the system monitor, and Firefox. I had ssh connected from another machine. When I returned to the system I found that the progress bar showed about 2/3 done and the update manager was announcing the name of one of the packages, I don't recall which. I noticed that the system monitor was not scrolling but it was not showing much CPU usage. I watched things for about a minute and did not see any change. I thought that something had crashed during the updates and I started to figure out what to do about that. Then I noticed that the system monitor had scrolled just a tiny amount - the system wasn't completely dead. So I watched it for a while longer and it scrolled another tiny amount. The mouse and cursor were operating normally so I fired up top in the terminal. This ran, although slowly, and it reported that most of the CPU time was going to gnome and to Xorg but no entry showed more than about 27% usage. (This system uses an Intel 950 with 8 processors.)

I spent a couple of minutes wondering what was going on and wondering what I should do. Suddenly, the system monitor started to scroll at normal speed and the graphs were typical. Apparently, whatever was wrong had cleared itself. The updates proceeded normally and finished. The system seemed to be running normally.

I was concerned that something may have been corrupted so I booted from an older release from a different partition. That version worked OK. I rebooted from the newest, updated version and the boot seemed to proceed normally up through the time when the system played the drumroll associated with login. However, instead of getting a login screen I had only the purple splash display with 5 red dots and nothing was changing; there was no login box. Since I could not log in, I reset the system and booted from an older release and this worked OK.

The next time that I booted the updated 10.10 release, it worked like it should. When the system was choked up, it was acting like it was extremely busy and did not have enough CPU time to update the display. But the cursor moved as it usually does, without hesitation or jerkiness.

I am not running the proprietary fglrx driver; whatever the 10.10 install provided is presumably what I am using. This system has two ATI HD4870 graphics cards because I want to run crossfire mode.

Ubuntu :: Tracking Updates Without Booting Into The System?

Is there a way of tracking updates without booting into the system. I am still on Karmic because of an annoying 'black screen at boot' bug. However i've got Lucid on a test partition waiting when the bug is fixed to upgrade my main system. I do not want to boot into my test system to check if there are any updates but track them online in some way to see when it's worth to boot to upgrade.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - System Crashing While Unattended After Updates

Aug 27, 2010

I've been running 10.04 on an old tower for a few weeks now. I've updated the software with no problems. Yesterday I let Update Manager go ahead with installing some updates. Now, the computer will crash while unattended. The screen stays off, and the machine doesn't respond to pings. I've found nothing of use in the syslog. The display going to sleep isn't the trigger, as it will turn off and come back before the issue presents. It seems to occur after 15 minutes or so of idle activity. Also, after an update a couple weeks ago, linux-headers and linux-image won't install cleanly. I'm going to try disabling power saving features to see if it continues occurring.

Ubuntu :: Login Via Gdm - Error Initiating Conversation With Authentication System - General Failure

Jun 13, 2010

I was having a problem with the keyring asking me for a password after I changed my user password. I googled it and found that since the password changed, I will get asked for the keyring password until I delete ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring. What happened was that I wasn't paying attention that you had to generate a new keyring password before rebooting.

Now, whenever I try to login via gdm, I get this message: error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure

How do I get it working again? I can still login from the terminal.

I just installed F11 on my laptop last night....the first thing I did was download Updates. Initially I wanted to focus on getting the critical updates installed only and while almost dozing off (Late night) I inadvertently ended up doing a bunch of other software updates. I wanted to know peoples thoughts...about software and system updates...do many of you just update everything or select the most important to download and install. Is there a way to rollback from any updates you installed...I have plenty of HD space..but if I don't need it...I dont want to keep it installed...also how many of you really look at every update to find out what is? Or do you just let it ride and install everything?

I recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

Mar 19, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and I have been keeping it updated via update manager.Last night the update manager popped up and I selected to update all required updates without checking what the updates were. While shutting down I noticed that I needed to reboot to complete the update, so I rebooted. After reboot the wireless network card disappeared. So I moved the PC and plugged in the ethernet cable. Oddly sometimes it shows disconnected for no reason and I have to reboot. What's even worst is that Ubuntu now locks up completely within 15 minutes of a reboot.None of the alt+sysrq commands do anything! How do I find out what the updates were and is there any way to I revert my system back to pre updates without having to reinstall?
