Ubuntu :: How To Change Window Backgrounds

May 25, 2010

I'm trying to install an emerald theme while maintaining the Compiz desktop effects. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lynx and have installed Emerald Theme Manager and Compiz. I was looking for a good theme to go with my background/laptop and took a liking to this one I'm sure this is a stupid question but how do I install this? By following the link to the rgba true theme, there are "instructions" on how to install it, but I just cant figure it out. I have the window borders setup but I'm stumped on how to get the transparent black window backgrounds(by window backgrounds I mean everything inside the frame). The frame works fine but it looks terrible with the solid white window interior. Can someone tell me how to get this working? I have already tried Compiz opacity (terrible, makes everything unreadable). Every background setting I see is RGB, no transparent setting. If it helps, I'm trying to get everything ~75% transparent, no solid colors.

Ubuntu :: How To Change The Xscreensaver Password Window

Jan 23, 2010

I recently installed xscreensaver in order to change some settings on some of the screensavers I have. All is well until I lock the screen. I do not like the look of the password entry window. the one that came with the GTK2 theme I use looked great and I was wondering if there was a way to tell xscreensaver to use that one instead of the one that it uses by default. Also, whenever I restart my computer I have to open up xscreensaver and tell it to kill the gnome-screensaver daemon and then start the xscreensaver one. Is there a way to automate this process?

I have also done many extensive searches on forums, but I cannot find one topic on this adjustment. Lots about fonts, window boarders and so on. I can change everything else but the tool bar colour.

Ubuntu :: Change Default Window Position?

I noticed that by default most of my programs start with their window on the top left (at least with my configuration) and I'd like them to start at the middle of my screen. Here's an example. I open (for the first time after logging in) System monitor, and it appears there:URL]How can I do this? I would also like them (the windows) to remember where I've placed them the last time I've used, for example, I want pidgin to start on the right and at the bottom, chrome in the middle, nautilus a bit at the top right, ... how can I do thisDIT: Ok, in Compiz there's an option to put it on the middle, with a 'smart' position, ... but nothing to remember the last position and size!

Ubuntu :: Change Default Window Manager?

I would like to change my default window manager to sawfish. There are many instructions on the web to install sawfish, log out, then select sawfish, then log back in. This worked for me with karmic, but I'm not seeing any way to select a window manager during the lucid log in process. (Sawfish is running fine if I start it with "killall compiz && sawfish &" during an ongoing session.)

Ubuntu :: Change Very Wide Window Borders?

Aug 16, 2009

There has to be an easy way to change window border width (pixels). Not sure how mine got so wide but I have looked in Appearance, Compiz, Emerald Themes, etc and I can't figure it out! I am using Ubuntu Jaunty and have searched high and low. I think it's gnome but I'm confused about windowing environments. Found some ideas (tried them all - all seemed reasonable (such as holding ALT while mousing, etc). So far no luck.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Change Firefox Window Icon?

Mar 13, 2010

I used a custom firefox icon (included in hydroxygen theme) in jaunty. Now, in karmic, the window icon is stuck with the default firefox icon. I managed to get the gnome menu and panel icons to change by sim-linking to my desired icons and naming the links "firefox-3.5.png" I can see my custom icon when I first start Firefox, when the "starting firefox" window appears in the tasklist. After the main window is up, the icon reverts to the default icon.If you don't know what I mean here's a screenshot where I have an already-opened window alongside an opening window. I would like the window to use the icon in the instance on the right.

I tried disabling the window switcher completely just to see that the configuration works at all.. and it did work.. so, I'm not sure what to do so the view point won't change.

Ubuntu :: Can't Change Default Window Theme In Gnome 3

Jun 8, 2011

I recently went through a desktop crisis after removing unity from 11.04, installing openbox, hating it, and then installing Gnome 3. What's weird is certain applications like chrome and some other system things appear to use the theme I have (as in, they look nice) but windows like terminal, file browser, and most other applications including the default log in screen all look like windows 95.

you can see the square unstyled buttons. I'm just wondering how to apply a full on system theme to apply to all windows in gnome 3. tweak-gnome didn't look like it could do it, and after running through the themes (redmond, clearlooks, etc) they didn't have any impact on these windows.

Ubuntu :: Change Color Of Window Slide Bar From White To Something Else

Oct 29, 2010

I am running SuperOS 10.10, which is based on Ubuntu 10.10. I am fairly new to gnome Ubuntu and never have dealt much with changing themes.I am using the Ambiance theme and like everything about it but the slide bar is white and hard to see. I like the fact that the close, minimize, maximize buttons are on the left side of the window. If I change the theme to clearlooks then the slide bar is blue and easy to see but the close, minimize, maximize buttons are on the right. I went into Ubunty Tweak, window manager settings when in the clearlooks theme and the close, minimize, maximize buttons are set to custom.

If I uncheck the custom button and click left then nothing happens. I would either like to change the color of the slide bar in ambiance theme or change the close, minimize, maximize buttons location in clearlooks theme. It is probably simple to do but I have been going in circles with no change. Can someone point me in the right direction? Nevermind, I will just switch to another distro. This question didn't generate a lot of traffic.

Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Change Window Manager

$ uname -a Linux inspiron 2.6.26.8-57.fc8 #1 SMP Thu Dec 18 19:19:45 EST 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

How do I change the window manager? At the moment when my laptop finishes booting I'm presented with a username prompt. There are no other controls of any kind. After logging in I'm using the twm window manager. I would rather be using fvwm. I've tried putting "fvwm" in the files .xinitrc, .xsession, and .Xclients, to no avail.

I have googled this and all the answers involve doing something in Gnome (don't have it), KDE (don't have it), or the clicking a button in the session manager (no buttons). There must be some configuration or script somewhere that it is telling xdm to run twm, but so far I haven't found it.
