Hardware :: Can't Change External HD File Properties

Sep 14, 2010

I have a WD external HD that I had set up with Mandrivia 2010. It worked fine, could read and write to it no trouble. Then I switched to Suse 11.3 and it says I do not have permissions any more to do anything but read. I have logged on as superuser (root) and tried everything. It will not change file or even drive permissions...

Hardware :: Change My External Hard Drive's File System From Ext3 To Fat32?

Feb 9, 2010

i needed to change my external hard drive's file system from ext3 to fat32, to use it in windows, which i did the simple way: i shrunk the ext3 partition, made a fat32 partition, copied the files over, removed the ext3 and made the fat32 bigger. unfortunately, while gparted was making the partition larger, my computer shut down. i lost all my files and the partition messed up immediately. i made a new fat32 partition, after deleting the old one, but noticed that gparted was showing 100 gigs already in use (???). so now i have a 300 gb hard drive with only 200 gb i can use; i ran df to make sure gparted wasn't messing up, but indeed it shows the partition as being only 200 gigs in size. i haven't tried making any other kind of partition yet, such as ext3, for fear of losing my files again, and because it wouldn't be permanent anyway, because i need those files in windows and stupid microsoft won't make their OS ext3 compatible.

Fedora Networking :: Gnome-network - Properties Change Location By

Sep 28, 2010

In gnome-network-properties I've set up two proxy locations: default and remote.

It's a bit of a fag having to change between them via the gui depending on where I am. Can the proxy be changed by command line because then I can set up a script to use the right proxy automatically? - e.g. use remote proxy if my mobile is connected via usb.

Had a google but don't think gnome-network-properties has command line options so I might be approaching this from the wrong tack.

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive - Error "read / Write Permissions" On The Folder Properties

Dec 16, 2010

i borrowed an external hard drive from my friend to back up a load of stuff on my windows partition before reinstalling it. I am doing this through ubuntu. I am trying to zip up folders like My Documents etc and chuck them on the external hard drive but it always comes up with errors to do with read/write permissions. In the permissions tab on the folder properties of the ext hard drive it says I am owner but i have no file access (only folder access is create and delete files). When i try to give myself read/write permission it just goes straight back to nothing when i look at it again.

I didn't touch the contents of the external hard drive, but now I can't mount it and the various xfs programs seem to demand that it be mounted in order for them to change anything.Anyone have any ideas on how to change an xfs partition from external log to internal? Failing that, how do I get the information off it?

OpenSUSE :: File Manager View Properties (in Details Columns)

Mar 1, 2010

I am newbie in openSUSE as still in transition from windows OS. How to display file properties (details other than size, date, permissions, owner, group, type) using file manager applications similar to Dolphin, Konquerer, etc. I have heaps of files ported from windows environment where I used to store descriptive subjects in one of the file properties field. In windows environment, I would have used file manager such as explorer to display the selected file properties field when searching for particular file before opening it. I know openoffice supports the file properties feature but unfortunately it would appear Linux OS currently does not have a file manager application ready to display these information.

Ubuntu :: File Properties Takes A Long Time To Open

May 6, 2010

I have a newly installed Kubuntu 10.04 running here, works fine except for one thing.

I have a kind of "fileserver" and it has a samba share that I have mounted in the home folder of my desktop computer ("/home/xxx/fileserver", the server is running an older version of Ubuntu, can't exactly remember what it is but the filesystem is ext2, if that's of any importance).

I have large files on the server, mostly video. When I use Dolphin (or Konqueror, doesn't make any difference) and right click one of these large files and choose Properties, it takes a LONG time to load the properties window. As if it copies the file to local hd before opening properties, or something.

The reason why I posted here and not in the networking section is, that I had the exact same setup with my previous installation which was Kubuntu 8.04, and also at least three different Ubuntu's before that. Never had this problem before, so I think my server and networking thingies are okay.

SUSE / Novell :: Udev Addition Hang File Browser 'properties' Menu / Why Is So?

Jan 22, 2010

I am trying to set up a usb weather station (WMR100) on my SUSE 11.1 system. It appears as /dev/hiddev0 (and /dev/hidraw0) when it is plugged in with:
crw-rw---- 1 root root ...
It is the only hiddev device that appears in /dev

I have added this to /etc/udev/rules.d code...

(I will add idVendor/Product values later)

The above successfully sets the access codes for hiddev0 when examined from command line (crw-rw-rw- ...). However, the file browser is fine until I look at the properties for /dev/hiddev0 when it hangs - showing nothing.

Can anyone shed light on this - especially as to if I have done something wrong or this might be a 'bug'

General :: External DVD-RW (ASUS) - Which /dev/ File Associated With External Dvdrom

Dec 11, 2010

I plugged in my external dvd-r (asus) via usb. It showed me some message on shell, that it has detected the cdrom(although its dvd rom as well but nevermind) and its of ASUS. But how do i know which dev it was associated with in /dev/? Since i had to test something, i plugged it out, and save the output of ls /dev/ > ~/result.txt

after plugging the dvd-rom, i compared the results and was able to find that it was associated with simple cdrom i.e. /dev/cdrom. I wanted to know that is there any command that will tell me which /dev/ file was associated with external dvdrom? i tried to see in the following result

1) df -h ( no results, just the already mounted partitions)
2) fdisk -l ( same as above)
3) dmesg | tail (shown almost the same result as was shown on shell at the time of plugging the dvd)

Ubuntu :: Change File Permissions To Change Background Screen?

Feb 21, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu Linux but have many years on windows platform. Please can someone help me with how to change the following items.

No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.

No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?

No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?

Anyone who can offer help on any of the above, guidance or advise me would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm still very much feeling my way with Linux so keep it simple.
