Fedora Networking :: Gnome-network - Properties Change Location By
Sep 28, 2010
In gnome-network-properties I've set up two proxy locations: default and remote.
It's a bit of a fag having to change between them via the gui depending on where I am. Can the proxy be changed by command line because then I can set up a script to use the right proxy automatically? - e.g. use remote proxy if my mobile is connected via usb.
Had a google but don't think gnome-network-properties has command line options so I might be approaching this from the wrong tack.

I'd like to know, what happened to this tool? Till F10 this tool was responsible for automounting Usb drives/Cdrom drives that were connected before I logged into the System via gdm. Since F11, this feature seems to be gone. I recently noticed that my external usb disk stopped to "automagically" appear on the desktop after login. Now I have to powercycle the disk (switch off, switch on) to have it appear on the desktop again. Is there an alternative tool to gnome-volume-properties, or do I really have to play around with hal to get this back? Doesn't really makes to me any sense to remove this feature.

I'm trying to go through the ProLinga tutorial and it's calling for gnome-database-properties and my research says that it is in the libgnomedb packages. However, I can't find anyplace that has this package. Has it been removed from Fedora 13?

Here is our network scheme for these two devices.

External IP: 1.1.1.1 (obviously not the real IP)[code].....

When I started off with fedora 12, I did not think I would be using more than 20GB for the file system. But recently I have been installing a lot of new games / software that have been using up that space. I however have the home directory on a separate partition. What I want to know is whether or not we can change the installation directory when using yum ? I know the other option (installing from source), but that would mean tedious handling of dependencies.

I'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

Code:
//SERVER/dfs/users/USER /media/USER cifs uid=1000,gid=1000,username=USER,password=PASSWORD 0 0
and when I try to run
[Code].....
The line worked fine on Ubuntu 10.04 but is causing this error on 10.10

My work uses a proxy server to mediate connections to the internet. However, changing the proxy settings in NetworkManager seems to have no effect. When I change the proxy settings in firefox from "use system proxy" to the actual proxy settings then it connects fine - but I would much rather be able to change the system proxy so that it works with all applications.
This is not confined to firefox - I have the same problem trying to use wget in gnome shell. However ftp works fine. I have just looked at the environment variables and it appears that NetworkManager is not setting the http_proxy variable (it is however setting ftp_proxy and https_proxy).

What I want is a location, say at home where I might use the wired connection on my laptop or the wireless. Likewise at work, I am usually on a wired connection but sometimes need a wireless connection. Can/does Network Manager let me configure a location with preferred adapter, etc and automatically switch or do I need to install something like Wicd? I don't see anything in Network Manager to do this.

I found problem in FC 12 release. I installed fc 12 to server (earlier there was FC 7). Then as always i realised that names of interfaces (eth0, eth1, eth2 .... eth9) changed after install. eth0 became eth9, eth1 became eth5 ... Earlier on previous fedora releases i solved this problem correcting HWADDR in ifcfg-eth files, so i linked MAC addresses to names (eth0, eth1, eth2) as i wanted in a right order. Now I can't do this. After correcting these files and restarting network sevice i constantly get a message: device ... has different mac than expected. I looked ifup-eth file and compare it with the same one in fedora 7. And i found that in fedora 7 there is function rename_device which processes if HWADDR value doen't coincide with real mac address value. See code:
# remap, if the device is bound with a MAC address and not the right device num
# bail out, if the MAC does not fit
if [ -n "${HWADDR}" ]; then
FOUNDMACADDR=`get_hwaddr ${REALDEVICE}`
if [ "${FOUNDMACADDR}" != "${HWADDR}" ]; then
curdev=`get_device_by_hwaddr ${HWADDR}`
if [ -n "$curdev" ]; then
rename_device "${REALDEVICE}" "${HWADDR}" "${curdev}" || {
echo $"Device ${DEVICE} has different MAC address than expected, ignoring."
[Code].....
But in fc 12 release there is no function rename_device!!!!!!!!! So in this case if HWADDR value is not the same as FOUNDMACADDR value (which equal to REALDEVICE mac address) i just get an error message So I can't change interfaces names, as result i can't organize right order of network interfaces as it was earlier on fc7.

I dont know why but I cant open the appearance properties anymore.The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.(Details: serial 693 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 to try out right? Well, I tried to expand the height of the bottom task bar to 35, and when I did, it had an graphical issue happen. Its almost as though the image isnt large enough so it starting repeating it to fill in the height. I think I can do screenshots so I can show below. Is there anyway to fix that?
The other question I have is, why is GNOME and KDE both using such larger buttons and drawing then Windows or even MacOS? Can they be made smaller? I can include screenshots for those if I need to.

It will not change file or even drive permissions...

Have been configuring fedora 14 to connect to a windows domain server and have been successful so far....am now on mapping network drives when the user logs in via the gnome gui.
If there is a better method of mapping network drives on login
After reading up on PAM_MOUNT and using that for mapping drives on login I have been able to successfully map them, but it doesn't do this automatically on gnome login.
Problem is as follows: It works when i connect / login using the terminal but requires me to enter the password once (even when i logged into the user account on gnome).
How I want it to work:I would like the mapping to occur when i login via gnome so that i dont have to open a terminal once logged in to gnome to map the network drives. I would like it to login without having to type the password again as the user is already logged in
Config Files:
#--- ~/.pam_mount.conf.xml ---#
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<pam_mount>
<volume fstype="cifs" server="GRA.GI" path="apps" mountpoint="/mnt/GRA.GI/apps"/>
</pam_mount>
[Code].....

Trying the various settings (and noticing ubuntu gnome users recently had the same exact OPPOSITE problem -- they can't SHOW hidden files in dolphin) to hide my hidden files in dolphin is not working. The settings are saved OK, but those damn (ending in tilde, ie "~") files do NOT ever hide! I even see the correct little green recycling symbol on them, indicating they're identified as such, but no actual hiding goes on..
Nautilus, which I've used before (but have grown tired of, and was looking forward to dolphin), also has a weird issue that seems to have appeared with FC13 (I'd been using FC12 'til now mostly because of this) - there's no way (AFAIK) to tell it to show the location; to see it, you have to click Go->Location each time. Previously I could set it to print out the whole file or server path and it would stay that way when I opened new windows.. This is on fresh install & update.. kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64.

I am running a HP dc5750 dual core computer with a 512MB Nvidia 7200/7300 graphics card my operating system is Ubuntu 10.10. Both my processors are operating at 98-104% cpu usage, it appears that gnome-appearance-properties is the culprit and the only way to return to normal is to end these processes. I have been setting up the desktop cube to my liking and the processor appears to rise up to 100% again. Would getting a 1GB graphics card correct this or is this a bug in maverick meerkat. Any advice would be appreciated. Please keep it simply as I am a Newbie to Linux and find things over-whelming at times. Also would running at 100% on both processors at indefinite periods of time harm my computer.

Is there a way to move the side and or top task bars as well as change there properties (auto hide). I know how to add programs to the side bar but can't figure out how to change the top bar menus. When I ran 32bit thru a windows vm I had a top bar where I could access the programs and no side bar. I liked it better than the 2 bar setup in my 64bit wubi install. Can it be changed?
