Debian :: Commands To Change Authentication Information
Nov 19, 2010
I wanted to change authentication options in
1) /etc/pam.d directory files common-password, common-auth, common-account
2) /etc/login.defs - PASS* fields
I know the fields that need to be changed but what I could not find was
a) commands that change these options similar to useraddusermod and so on but those which can change system wide settings
b) API that can change these options (C API)
I have almost accepted that there in fact aren't such things. You have to manually update the files. I would prefer not though. So I am asking here as last attempt to find such commandsAPI. Please let me know if they are available.

I have to setup a WiFi network for a hotel. There are several possibilities, but for me the best one is to setup a open Wifi network with web authentication for single user. What is the best solution in terms of compatibility, security, reliability, etc? I don't know many solution for web authentication, only the RADIUS project.

Php file that basically runs a few commands and echoes the output. It's for checking things like temperatures etc, space free.
You can see it in action here: [url]
I've attached the actual php file.
Two questions:
1) What more can I add to it to give me even more information?
2) I want to add hddtemp but it requires sudo to run. How can I get around this?

To run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

I got myself curious on the possibility to change user's permission to any command, or at least giving other users some command line "power".
It all started a few days ago, when another user here, had a problem so that the computer wasn't answering.
So, after waiting a while, chose to hit the Reset button and start the computer again.
Considering this situation, I thought myself that it would have been better to restart the computer, through command line, on any terminal (F1-F6). Anyway, this user is no administrator, thus wouldn't have permission to use the code...
So, is it possible to let other users to use such commands, in order to safe rebooting the system, without logging as root?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, but wanted to use Banshee instead of Rhythmbox. After running Code: sudo aptitude install banshee I wanted to bind my "Media" button on my keyboard to run banshee; unfortunately, it still wants to run rhythmbox. Where can I change the default command executed by these keyboard shortcuts? I can't seem to find them in gconf-editor under apps/metacity/* and googling has proved fruitless in finding where this configuration file is located.

I recently purchased a replacement CPU & motherboard and, with a grand after-market CPU heatsink and fan, was able to create a stable overclocked system of 3.8/3.9GHz (from a stock of 3.2GHz).
However, when I run, say, Code: Select alllscpu, Code: Select allcpuid (after installing said package) or Code: Select allless /proc/cpuinfo it only lists the stock speeds of 3.2GHz.
What would be the best way within my operating system to view my current clock speeds?

I am new to Debian and Linux all together. At work, we have dual even triple minitors at our stations. I have not seen this on linux until I went to a co-workers house. I wanted to do the same and I have two monitors. I asked how but he uses X on Gentoo. How can I go about learning how to do this? I can tell you now, I DO NOT know how to get the monitor information on the system. I DO NOT know where to find the configuration files for my monitor.
I know I am going to need drivers and stuff. What I asking I guess is where I should start in order to get this going. I am running Debian (lenny) 4 GIGS ram, 1.5TB HDD and a Dual core processor. I know the video card I have is a dual head video card for two monitors. I would like to thank everyone in advanced for their and hopefully I can learn something new and be able to do this on my own in the future.

Suppose I have the library code in library.cpp. I found that to include the version information in the .so library, I had to use these command forms:
Code: Select allg++ -Wall -fPIC -c library.cpp
g++ -shared -Wl,-soname,library.so.0 -o liblibrary.so.0.1
The howto then continued to recommend creating symbolic links pointing at the newly compiled library. [URL] ....
The result is, during the booting sequence, I am receiving this error:
Code: Select alllibsystemd-login.so.1: no version information available (required by /usr/bin/dbus-daemon).
The library is the one I am working on.

When booting Debian, you'll see it printing a lot of information about the system variables and such.
I don't really need to see all that, so I'd like to modify some scripts to make sure that on boot, it just does what it has to do, without printing it on the screen. Just something I fancy.
Offcourse, still seeing errors would be nice. But that long slur of text, I could do without.
I've tried looking it up, but I can't find documentation on this specific thing anywhere.

A related question... my NIS users can only log in on client machines using the terminal; it doesn't work at the graphical login screen. Is this normal? I'm new to NIS (just set it up last night) and still getting this stuff sorted out.
