I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 the other day and learned a lot about it. One thing I noticed quickly is that, the applications to not show up in the task bar, so I have to switch from one to another via ATL+Tab.Many times I accidentally open another thing of Firefox and have two of the same thing open. How do I get it show you can see which apps you have open in the task bar?

I have an issue with my task bars. My task bar that shows my active applications is on the bottom, the expand is disabled and auto hide is enabled. The task bar that has Applications, System, Places, and so on is on the top with the same preference settings. However every time I restart my system both task bars are at the top.

I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy file manager keeps on opening in the taskbar and it will not stop, but no application comes up, only in the taskbar. No icons will show up on my desktop either. When I go to open up the file manager, nothing comes up. Even when I try nautilus or sudo nautilus nothing happens. I read on another forum to use gconf-editor and nothing fixed it. What do I do? I need to have my computer fixed for school. I am running Ubuntu x86 64-bit on a HP Pavilion tx2500z laptop.

I asked him what he saw improved over xp, and he could only list the mouse hover preview of tasks in taskbar and media player could show all songs with word black in title. I am training my 3 and 5 year old on Ubuntu, and they (& wife) cannot grasp the difference between bottom taskbar and top applications menu. Even on my xp machine they freak out (including 10 year old with computer classes) when I minimize their applications to work on my own when they get up from the dining room machine.
And, so I though I would download "Visual tray tip" which mimics the taskbar preview on mouse hover. But on my 6 gig hard drive, p3 650 mhz 1 gig ram living room notebook (mainly flash educational gaming for kids) I really would like such a task bar preview. But upgrading Ubuntu is out of the question, since it is a functioning machine with 211 megs free on drive, and I have no stomach, time, or wish to kill it by an upgrade. So, am wishing for a sudo apt-get install solution.
Earlier this afternoon I updated Ubuntu and now Firefox will not start. It will show in the task bar that it is "Starting" then that disappears and nothing happens

It's like they were never installed, but I know for a fact I watched them being installed in the terminal and everything. The application I am most concerned with is ies4linux(mainly because its in the way of my WoW playing). I did the whole cabextract (already have wine) and downloaded the ies4linux file.It runs the installer for it, however it doesn't show in the applications or home folder.

The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.

In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. I have my task list in evolution (mainly so it can sync with my phone and online task list) but I always forget to look at the task list. Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

I have a windows app installed under wine. It works fine. However, it has the ability to launch openoffice to do further functions. Obviously I have openoffice installed under linux, but the wine app cannot see it. How can I make the wine app see across the emulation layer into linux to see the app it needs? Dont tell me I need to install openoffice under wine as well to get it to work!
