I installed openoffice. installation seemed to go well, but openoffice doesn't show up under main/applications/office. in fact - it doesn't show anywhere.
I did find it using "find files/folders" ...in the folder:

I've created an application and I'd like to add it to the Launcher. I've tried using Main Menu, but it still doesn't show up when I search for it.

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
I've recently tried to install various well known programs however they do not show up anywhere. Even in the home folder they do not show up. It's like they were never installed, but I know for a fact I watched them being installed in the terminal and everything. The application I am most concerned with is ies4linux(mainly because its in the way of my WoW playing). I did the whole cabextract (already have wine) and downloaded the ies4linux file.It runs the installer for it, however it doesn't show in the applications or home folder.

To register the data source its 'FILE'> 'WIZARDS' then' ADDRESS DATA SOURCE.' But OO doesn't show the 'ADDRESS DATA SOURCE' at the bottom of the list, so I am stuck. Apart from that, I have had no problems with ubuntu and its working well.

But it doesn't show as installed software in the Installed Software Centre. So, I cant uninstall it. I can't configure it? If I try to open Gmailwatcher I receive a popup asking me to open it from an icon above - but there's no icon there, I just want a simple email notifier - preferably one which I can add an audio alert.

They install fine in KDE (configur desktop / fonts ) and are available in progs like Gimp. But Open Office doesn't recognize the new installed fonts. What am I missing here?

Often I open FireFox, get information, which I want to save in an OpenOffice Writer or Calc file.So I go to the left lower corner on the screen, tap on Computer, and then on OpenOffice Writer.When the OpenOffice window has opened, I do not see, as I used to do, the FireFox button on the taskbar (or panel), I have to drag the OpenOffice window, so I can access my FireFox window. When I do that, the OO window bounces, which makes me feel rather sea-sick.Is there a way to have the button for the open applications visible on the task bar (or panel) so that I can go immediately to the other open application ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I disinstalled with yast java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.2-0.2.1-x86_64 and java-1_6_0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.2-0.2.1-x86_64 (which were installed as part of our sitewide suse 11.3 installation) and replaced them with java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 and java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 (et al) to solve my problem about bad graphics quality in firefox applets as described and suggested in this other postl.That successfully solved my applet problem, but I just discovered it triggered a new problem with openoffice . I tried opening an existing sxc document and got this error message:[Java framework]sunjavaplugin.so could not load Java runtime library: file:///usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so.
It looks like that openoffice is still looking into the old openjdk instead of the new sun java. How can I repoint it to use the current java (assuming it really needs it) ? Apparently even entering openoffice on a new document gives error in a popupOpenOffice org requires a JRE to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install a new JRE and select it under Tools-Options-OpenOffice org-Java ... but since openoffice does not start I cannot access those options I guess (or is such stuff located elsewhere, and if so where) ?
Ubuntu insists on using movie player as the default for audio files. I would like to use VLC. VLC doesn't show up on the list as preferred applications for multimedia. I tried using custom with vlc %u but it doesn't work.

Or do I need to completely remove the present program and install the latest from OpenOffice.org? It would appear that the one that came with the system was pieced together by the Suse team - do they update this at all?

Using both packages at a far more basic level than you guys by the sounds of it, but still the formatting is a nightmare. I've been using and trying out a number of distros over the past year or so and everything I need is right here. Its just so annoying theres one thing that stops me converting all together. I could write a perfect essay up in Open Office and take it into college. Open it up on their MS Word and its all goes to pot. Everything all over the place, and I have to realign margins, paragraphs etc etc. Regardless to file format its saved in, I've tried them all!

I've just installed 11.3 on my mother's laptop. I downloaded and installed Swiftfox, but there's no evidence of it in the menu. I can double-click the Swiftfox.desktop icon in /usr/share/applications, and Swiftfox runs properly. However, it's not listed in the KDE menu.Is there a way to manually update the menu?I didn't have this problem with the previous version of openSuse on this computer. But I did a fresh install, rather than update to 11.3.
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy cpu usage goes way up. Top doesn't show anything using the cpu to any great extent. I did a "ps -ax" and statred doing process kills. I kiilled a dbus pre-fork first, which brought, which stopped the cpu hogging. This is the process line:
/bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session
Does anyone know what that does, or what I killed?
I use gtranslator to translate po files. Gtranslator worked fine on 11.3 but when I installed 11.4 it crashed. I opened a Bug report here. Although I followed instructions, I couldn't solve it. Now I use Gnome 3. I installed gtranslator from the page where it says about Gnome 3. Now my gtranslator is 2.90. Now when I open a file, it returns the following image The numbers you see below are the words. I don't see a thing. I can move to next word but I still cannot see anything.
