Applications :: Automated Install Of 30 Applications Across Multiple Distributions?
Jun 15, 2010
I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

I was wondering if there was any way to remove icons from the installed applications menu?I recently attempted to install GOG.com's Zork Anthology using Wine and when I de-installed, the icons for those files were still listed in installed applications. Is there anyway to delete them manually?

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
Is there a way to do this in C/C++.
I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

What do people use to run multiple applications in one terminal?
Thinking of turning my GUI into a big terminal with openbox on top and was thinking, where would I find a command-line timer tool?
And if I only had one terminal, how would I switch between applications? A 5 hour timer isn't nice if it locks up the terminal for 5 hours...

I am running Xubuntu on a MacBook Pro with fluxbox as my window manager. Yesterday when I attempted to launch firefox I received a bus error and the application did not launch. I corrected the problem by removing and reinstalling firefox. Today the same problem is happening with emacs. I have not tried removing and reinstalling emacs so I am not sure if that will work but since the problem has occurred in more than one application now, I assume it points to a larger issue. I have done some research on bus errors but it isn't clear why this problem would manifest in different applications in this manner. After the a failed launch the dmesg reports this, which seems relevant:

I am using putty to connect to some servers. Is there a program that let you connect to say three servers and when you write your commands to server1, server2 & 3 also gets the command? So I don't have to log in to all three servers to do the exact same thing.

I would like to open multiple applications with one keyboard shortcut but don't get it running. When I add (open "System" > "Preference" > "Keyboard Shortcuts"; clicked "Add" ) a new shortcut and enter many commands in the "Command" field e.g. "gnome-terminal & xeyes" only the first application is started. I also tried to set up a shell script that contains the application calls and then use "gnome-terminal -x "sh /path/to/the/script.sh" but then I get the error message "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal".

I am trying to install 2 or 3 versions of linux on my hardisk of 500GB capacity. The configuration of my machine is Intel Dual Core, 4 GB Ram, 3.0 Processor Windows XP is not installed on this.I tried to use a tool called GParted but was unable to use as it was not able to bring up the XServer So I booted the machine with fedora14 installation CD and chose "Custom Layout" After reading about the partitions needed by Fedora I created 3 partitions in /dev/sda
/dev/sda1 the boot of 500MB formated as ext4
/dev/sda2 the swap of 6096MB formatted as swap
/dev/sda3 / size 150GB formatted as ext4
The installation went well and fc14 runs well on this.
However when I went to install the other linux version ....the installer was not able to recognize the unallocated space of nearly 350 GB on the hard disk.....So I am not able to create new partitions and then install the new linux on the newer partition. As a result I am unable to make use of the remaining space on the HDisk.I think I should have created /dev/sda4 /dev/sda5 etc when I installed fc14 itself....
Would appreciate some tips on how to install the other versions of Linux on this HDisk....

I have trouble when typing in Open Office Writer, Kmail, and zim, among other applications. It's not due to unintentional use of the 'insert' key, either. When I type in these applications, the word I am typing often disappears entirely if I don't add a space, return, or punctuation at the end of the word, or use the arrow keys. For example, when setting up a profile in Kmail, I typed my email address into the settings dialog box, and it kept removing the last part of the address: "myname@univ.edu" would always become "myname@univ." unless I added a space after the edu.
When I first encountered this behavior, in Writer, I thought it was a bug with the AutoComplete feature. But now that I've seen it in other applications, I think it is something more general. how to stop the unexpectedly deletion of words while typing?

some users [ possibly ATI card owners running fglrx default ubuntu driver ] have issues having compiz enabled and trying to change the mouse pointer to a larger size. It actually doesn't get resized at all, expect when moved over Firefox and OpenOffice.I was fiddling in trying to get a workaround for this when suddenly Nautilus started to crash and respawn in an infinite loop. Everything then started to fail. gnome-terminal wouldn't open, xterm wouldn't open, menus wouldn't respond. Etc.The entire GNOME desktop was inoperable.
Logging out and choosing Fluxbox and KDE didn't help. I was sent right back to the GDM login screen. Hmm... seems not related entirely to GNOME... if it all. From a terminal, I could see constant crashes, segfaults on libc6-2.11.1..While at it, I logged on another account (my wife's) and everything was perfectly FINE, with no issues at all. Creating them another account and initializing, it also didn't happen any segfaults. However, everytime I logged in my own account, everything would happen again... nautilus respawning, no terminal, nothing, not even logout would work. Either I hit a MAJOR BUG in libc6 current ubuntu compile, or a setting file inside my home dir got really corrupted and screwed up. It was very frustrating, because this bug was a show stopper. For those who concern, my mobo is an Asus M3A78-EM running a ATI HD 3200 IGP, and I have ubuntu-default fglrx running.
I had run memtest+ overnight and no errors whatsoever. The fact that this was an "account specific" issue deems that there is no hardware fault. I had to migrate my old account to a newly created account, it was hard work because of my 100GB files. Setting ownership in each of them, etc. Everything is OK now, but I really wished to know what dimmed out my bright Lucid Lynx experience yesterday. And I just hope this doesn't happen again.

I get to my specific problem, I'm running Xubuntu 9.10 (karmic) on a Playstation 3 (PPC). I am attempting to install "Qemu-launcher".
1. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" via "Add / Remove Applications". it gave me an error about conflicting packages, and deferred me to Synaptic Package Manager.
2. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" in Synaptic Package Manager. error: "Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade -- the following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. -- qemu-launcher: Depends: qemu-kvm (>=0.11.0~rc1) but it is not installable"
3. Tried to download "qemu-launcher" via "apt-get" in terminal - same error as in Synaptic
4. Attempted to download "qemu-kvm" via "apt-get" in terminal: "package qemu-kvm is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: package qemu-kvm has no installation candidate."
5. Found and downloaded "qemu-kvm-0.11.0~rc1.orig.tar.gz". Extracted archive.

My requirement is to route ssh sessions from a single head node to multiple slave nodes. So what i want is, for a client there is just one point of entry (master/head node) to ssh into, it evaluates the load on the slave nodes connected on to internal network and routes the ssh session, kind of a ssh load balancer. what open source solution i can apply for my problem?

I've been looking though different editors for one that has good printing support. Ideally it should be able to print C++ code with line numbers, syntax highlighting, multiple columns per page, customizable fonts and sizes and a print preview feature so that I can make sure it looks right before sending it to the printer. It appears that notepad++ had at least some of these features, but it is not available on linux. The best I could do so far is to copy/paste the output of 'cat -n foo.cpp' into oowriter and format it into two colums. I don't get synax highlighting though and I have to manually replace tabs with a few spaces as well as some excessive leading spaces before the line numbering.

What is the best way to setup for a number of very different distributions of Linux on a single machine/HD? Can multiple systems use the same oot partition? That seems to be the bottleneck. Only 3 primary partitions possible on a single HD, allowing for all other partitions under an extended partition.

I downloaded and created a LiveCD using PCLinuxOS 2009.I decided I wanted to devote a machine to Linux so I could do more. I installed PCLinuxOS on one of my systems. Great. everything seems to be working pretty good. again, surprised and curious. Lets install some apps and really get the ball rolling... How on God's green earth do you install applications on Linux? You have to jump through hoops and travel to application managers, command line scripting and all sorts of other mess just to install a program? Is it really that much different that a simple install or setup file cannot be created that the end user clicks on? I'm struggling with the concept that entire programs can be written in open source code but an installation routine is beyond the scope of the developers.

I have what seems to be far to many KDE programs running on my Gnome desktop is this normal?
I thought there would be gnome equivalents.
I'll list them:
Is this normal for a Gnome Desktop Fedora installation and if so which are completely arbitrary and can be removed safely?
Also is xorg supposed to use 8-20% of the CPU when all that is running is the system monitor? The system monitor application also uses 20-70% of the CPU when it is running by itself also. (Intel Pentium 4, 3.2ghz)
I didn't choose any KDE desktop Applications Intentionally

It's a newbie question that has probably already been answered hundreds of times, but Google didn't help me.
How can I install an application I've downloaded from the internet?I know I can easily install software with the terminal (apt-get, yum etc.) and that there is also a package manager. But still I'd like to know how to install an application I've downloaded with the browser. I've downloaded Thunderbird from this link URL...and after unpacking, I have a folder called 'thunderbird'. Now, what do I have to do to install the application?
I'm not actually concerned with installing Thunderbird anymore because when I typed 'thunderbird' in the terminal, it told me that it isn't installed and if it should be installed. I replied 'y' and some minutes later (slow internet connection...) it was installed and ready to use..
