After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 all of a sudden, the task manager or task bar, keeps changing length. The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.

I have my task list in evolution (mainly so it can sync with my phone and online task list) but I always forget to look at the task list. Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

I've been using BasKet Notepad for about two years now on a Dellbuntu Mini-9. I just installed Mint8 Xfce and finished installing all my preferred apps this morning, including Basket. Unfortunately, when I tried to import my archive from the old system (saved on a thumb), it fails to recognize it as an archive file. At first I thought it might be linked ot its apparent inability to recognize the thumb drive, so I transferred the file to the SSD, extracted it, etc. All the files are there, it seems, but the individual baskets are all saved as .html files. There doesn't seem to be any "archive" as such that I can import.
Now the weird thing is that I've imported the archive before, back into Basket on the dellbuntu version of 8.04, without any problem. What gives? This is my research. For my dissertation. While I'm heartened that it still exists, I am more than a little annoyed at the notion that I might have to cut and paste every damn basket into the system (which I've already done once when I tried to put the notes on my home desktop XP system. I am returning to the field in five weeks and really want these things accessible. Is there any help for this?

it usually happens when i use firefox (does not happen with other browsers like opera or chrome) to visit, for example, videos. where it should be pitch black, screwed up parts of the video or another multimedia program (such as second life) show up. it has happened on white colors as well. here are some shots. i did not take them using print screen since, strangely, print screen does not seem to capture this glitch. i am using ubuntu 10.10 on a 1 gb nvidia 9500gt.

I've been having trouble trying to install ubuntu (and mint linux too) - I have the same problem with either version.
It's an Acer T180 tower PC, when I come to install it'll go through the motions of setting up the drive, copying files and then downloading/installing language packs. Randomly though between copying files and downloading/installing language packs it will just sit there and freeze. Sometimes it will just freeze and stay on the same image, other times it will freeze and what's best described as a window blinds effect will go across the whole screen. Either way the PC stops responding.
I've tried multiple downloads of iso files (ubuntu and then mint) - running on usb and also running from cd and dvd - same issue each time. I've made sure that the username is lowercase too (just in case).
The other thing I've tried is removing the separate nvidia graphics card and using just the internal one (again an nvidia card). Ubuntu will prompt that there are restricted drivers available - doesn't matter whether I install them or not - it still freezes just the same.

I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1464. I have Ubuntu 11.04 Installed, and every time I have the volume at MAX and especially when I'm listening to music that has like high bit-rate (342) or what ever, there is a glitch in the sound, it sounds like when a CD skips or when it is scratched. I tried installing all types of different mp3 encoders and still the same.
Also it is the same when I use Banshee or Rhythumbox.

While pretty, in a plaid way, my System Monitor screen is less than helpful. This started after I upgraded to 9.10 and applied more recent updates. From what I've read, the glitch is Radeon based. I have a Radeon 7000 card which itself has 32mb of ram, but I told my computer a couple years ago to think it had 128. I've tried the suggested short term fix in the linked thread (change the driver in /etc/X11/xorg.con to "vesa") but it didn't work.
I have two related requests: What can I try to solve the System Monitor glitch? How do I reset my settings back to knowing my video card's real capacity?

I upgraded the UNR from 10.04 (which worked ok) to 10.10. Now, if I log in with the UNR session I get a weird graphics glitch (see attached screenshots). The panels are transparent and all the icons are invisible, though drop-menus seem to work (see: Unity02.jpg). Also, the side panel is transparent and does not display any icons (see: Unity01.jpg)
My system: MSI s420 laptop
video: radeon xpress 200M
cpu: dualcore intel of some sort
ram: 2 GB

I'm running 10.10. I'm trying to generate a set of labels for a new contacts list in evolution. Problem is I can't get glabels to merge the new contact list, even though it is selected as default in evolution. When I select Objects, Merge properties, and format "data from default evolution addressbook", it always imports the contacts list which was the original default, even though I have changed the default. I have reinstalled glabels, but problem remains. Seems like a simple issue, but its driving me mad.

I recently installed Ubuntu Karmic Koala onto my old IBM Thinkpad (I THINK it's an X23 model, but don't quote me on it). The only reason I went with the older, obsolete version is, honestly, it's the only one that will run on it. That said, I love it and see no reason to go back to Lose-dows full time (I'll still get a Windows machine in order to learn the inner workings of it... thinking of going back to school for a tech job, so the knowledge will do me good). When I bring up various windows (most disturbingly, my system monitor), I get a bizarre glitch. It's hard to describe, so I'll give a screencap.

When KDE starts up a new session, it restores the progs that were running at log out last time.I am running skype and that prog is brought back but I suspect that KDE is restarting the "bin" (skype-bin) rather than the startup script (skpe) which contains the necessary "LD_PRELOAD" stuff essential to get the webcam operating OK.I can't find where KDE stores the session info, any ideas?

I have an Eee PC 1005 dual-booting Windows 7 and openSUSE 11.3. Everything is nice and polished except for one thing. The first tweak I made to the system was the kernel parameter "acpi=Linux" which made the Fn keys work. Then I installed eee-control from the openSUSE Build Service, which worked very well (I was getting a bit frustrated; the source would build and install, but eee-control-daemon would immediately die. Anyway.).
My problem is that when I press the Fn-F2 combo to disable wifi, all mention of wifi completely vanishes from the tray applet. Even when I press Fn-F2 again to turn the radio back on (and the light does cycle like it does in Windows), it is gone. I need to reboot with the radio on, then it works perfectly again, until I press Fn-F2 again.

I just encountered an odd network stack glitch and wondered if anyone has seen this before, or knows what could cause it. When I connect to services on localhost (127.0.0.1) if there is a process listening, it works OK as expected. there is no process listening, I should get a NAK and see a connection refused message. With this glitch, that was not happening. And this was with 127.0.0.1 to 127.0.0.1. Nothing was listening, but the SYN attempts were all that were happening. If there was something listening that worked OK. Connections to other hosts worked as expected.

I'd have said SNAFU, but the truth is that I really don't recall this mess being "normal" in Slackware since v7. This kind of mess is what I expect from Ubuntu, not Slack. Here's what happened. I was running Slackware-Current 12/10/10 and wanted to move up to Current 1/10/11. I read and followed the UPGRADE.txt including running "telinit 1". The system had 2 working kernels menued in Lilo, a custom 2.6.35.10 symlinked to "/boot/vmlinuz", and a custom 2.6.36 fully declared in lilo.conf and labelled Current.
The "upgradepkg --install-new" installed a "new" kernel which would only have required a simple deletion, but somehow and for some silly reason my lilo.conf was overwritten and lilo run so that when I selected "Current" instead of my nice 2.6.36, long story short, I got a badly working kernel where my keyboard didn't work.
Why would "upgradepckg --install-new" install an older kernel, and more importantly, instead of merely as an added option, override and ruin my existing, working lilo? Slax is overhauling to add pacman and I see some people even here leaning toward more automated package management in Slackware. What gives? Is Slackware headed down this path? Please, Joe, just tell me it ain't so.

You know that glitch where your monitor doesn't come back after switching off for power saving? That's gotten WAY worse since switching to Lucid. It used to happen every other day or so, now it happens 2-3 times a day. Songbird used to keep it from switching off on Karmic, but Songbird doesn't work on Lucid so that's out the window.
Also: as similar error happened when restarting after the glitch happened this latest time. Ubuntu started running its routine disk check and I hit C to skip it. The screen went down like it does in the Monitor Sleep glitch. I reset again, it did it again. Eventually, I just let it do the check. This has NEVER happened before.

I've also tried with 10.4.1 LTS.I've tried burning it to a disc and i've tried making a bootable USB. (I ran out of dvds so im only trying from usb now).I load from the disc/USB and ill get the menu asking if i want to try ubuntu, install ubuntu, check for errors etc..... I choose try ubuntu and ill get the UBUNTU logo with the loading dots undernieth. The screen then glitches and theres multicolor lines frozen accross the monitor. Stuck that way until i restart. This also happens when i try to install it to the harddrive. It happens on both versions in both 64 and 32 bit. I checked the disc and all files are present.I've had ubuntu installed over a year ago.

I've been having this glitch since Maverick. I hoped installing Narwhal would solve it (clearly not), I like Ubuntu, but this makes the OS frustrating and pretty much unusable, forcing me to stick with Windows.
The glitch appears randomly but mostly within 5-10 minutes after booting.
Another thing : when you want to screenshot the glitch, it usually gives you a perfect image, with everything OK. I have no idea why it worked now. I have a Packard Bell Dot M Netbook.

I tried installing a wallpaper and it said that I would have to open up a web browser to view it, but when I did it launched over and over again, and I couldn't even properly shutdown, I had to hold down the power button. But it seems fine now, but from now on I'm avoiding downloading Wall Paper that requires you to use a web browser to view and download.

So I've upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, which has been a tadge more interesting than I would like, but there it is. But I've got one problem that is eluding me still. When I load up, but before login, my second monitor displays what I can only describe as a glitched-up memory of something it was displaying before, unless it has been turned off and turned back on again (as opposed to restarted), in which case it displays a very bizarre tiled image. I can't help but feel this is something obvious I've missed.

Is anyone familiar with how to correct a glitch with Qemu-KVM that prevents virtual machines (Windows Server guests) from starting after the Linux host has been rebooted? I've only recently started using Fedora a couple months ago. I used Ubuntu for a few years before. I'm posting because I have a strange graphical glitch in gnome shell. For some reason, this glitch did not appear when I was using Gnome 3 with ubuntu, and I didn't notice it on the F15 Live CD.
There appears to be an artifact (looks like a crack) in my shell. It only appears when the icons fade if I'm scrolled down in the applications menu. Similar artifacts appear in the gnome shell notifications, such as the messaging notifications. I have a ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card and am using the default drivers. NOT the proprietary fglrx/catalyst/whatever driver. I've attached a pic.

When it launches, sometimes a few mins later, the upper left of the screen (where gnome-terminal sits) freezes and becomes unresponsive. The cursor always stays as the 'text entry' cursor when in the region. If I alt-drag the window and close, nothing changes. It only goes away when I right click the area (even if I have moved/closed the terminal window) I have terminal options so I select 'close' then the screen resumes.
