OpenSUSE Install :: Soft Lockup: CPU# Stuck - 11.4

Mar 23, 2011

11.4 Boot Freeze That is there is a BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck message and the boot hangs. The modprobe/migration codes are not identical with the linked thread. I'm stuck with CPU#0 at [modprobe:138] and #1 stuck at [migration1:8]. Generally after 61 or 63s.

This is a zypper dup from latest 11.3.The machine boots with acpi=off, luckily. But I'd like to have it all working. The forum says I can't post attachments; hwinfo output seems a bit copious to quote inline. But I'd be happy to provide any additional info obviously.

Ubuntu :: Soft Lockup - CPU#0 Stuck For 61s?

Apr 30, 2010

I recently installed 10.4 on my laptop and I love it, so I wanted to install it on my desktop. It's a somewhat older computer, AMD3000+ nForce 2, 1.5 gigs of Ram and a Radeon x1650. Whenever I try to start the Live CD I get the error soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s and it doesn't continue.

Aug 18, 2015

i'm trying to Debian 8.1.0 on my notebook Acer Travelmate 2200. Currently i have very outdated version of Linux Mint. It works fine but I prefer keeping system updated. Only way to get updated system now is install new one, and here i have a problem. After CD/ISO booting, installation looking for a mountd devices, etc. then i got statement that CPU stuck for x sec. The same statement appears every 20sec. I was trying it on other linux distr's they give the same error. I didn't overclocked my notebook, his temp is ok. I'm working on it few hours each day, it didn't overheat. Someone told me thats bug of 2.6.x kernel but I'm trying install new system with 3.16.x.

Ubuntu :: Soft Lockup - Cannot Boot At All

Jul 30, 2011

I cannot boot into Ubuntu at all. I have two kernels installed, 2.6.35-28 and 2.6.35-30. The first thing that happened today was that I wasn't able to boot into the latter. I was shown the (in)famous "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s". At this point I could still boot into the 2.6.35-28 kernel. But after shutting down and starting again an hour later, I got the same message when trying to boot into 2.6.35-28. I have tried leaving out the boot options "splash" and "quiet" on both kernels and also adding in "noapic". No combination helps. Needless to say, booting into recovery mode doesn't work either. Up until today, I have been able to boot into both kernels with no problems.

Hardware :: EXT3 Aborting Journal - Kernel Soft Lockup ?

Feb 2, 2011

I have a system running CentOS 5.5 (194.32 Kernel) that has been working fine for about 8 months. I found it stuck one morning dumping a Soft Lockup Kernel message every 10 seconds and have been trying to find out what is going on - here is what I've done and found.

System is a Core i3 with 4Gb DDR3 ram and 2 1.5Tb SATA drives - everything is less then 1 year old with not too much load (this is a backup system for my server - a twin and the other works fine)

Intel Mobo: DM55HC

Rebooting the system (after doing a fsck on the drives with lots of errors) it runs for about 20 hours or so and then drops back into this problem.

Prior to going into the soft lockup it reports that the Journal has aborted on one drive or the other and drops into a Read Only FS.

There is nothing in the logs apart from the aborting journal message and the soft-lockup)

Tried fsck with badblocks check on the 2 mountpoints for both drives (dunno how to check the swap partition) - nothing I could see there.

I have tried memtest for about 36hours. No errors

I ran smartctl long tests on both drives. No Errors

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.3 - Complete Lockup On KDE Login?

Jul 16, 2010

I have been running 11.2 32bit on my IBM T43 laptop without issue. Tonight I downloaded 11.3 32bit and installed to HDD. On reboot into new system laptop has complete freeze. Can not do anything but power off to reboot. I also found the same situation if I try to run KDE live off the cd. Oh yes, I downloaded the openSUSE 11.3 KDE Live CD version.

So here is what I found. On bootup (either HDD install or Live CD desktop) I will goto to tty1 or tty4 to see the boot up process messages. And it get right up to the login prompt without issue. If I then switch back to tty7 (the normal bootup display) after a few seconds the screen and laptop itself completely lockup (freeze). So I power off to reboot.

this time I boot up in tty1 again until login prompt but this time I type root to login. Then I switch to tty7 and now I can see the desktop. I goto the menu to search and load up Kinfocenter but then its freezes again.

So its very frustrating as I can not use this new version of openSUSE on my laptop. It just keeps freezing. Whats worse is I cant see any logs or screen message in tty1 because once it starts to login to desktop it freezes. So I am not even sure how to troubleshoot any further what the issue is. I assume its KDE4 or XOrg server.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Opensuse 11.3 Lockup With KWin / Everything Will Freeze Except Mouse Pointer

Aug 30, 2010

I'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.

OpenSUSE Install :: Lost KDE GUI And Stuck Mostly With CLI

Oct 4, 2010

I can't get my usual gui now. I had videocard problems which I was attempting to solve by uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver. While doing this the card failed completely and I had nothing on the screen at all. So I had to shut it down by killing the power. I now have a new video card in the machine but I've lost KDE. I'm not sure how it happened but when I tried to log in I was presented with the login screen one usually gets when you choose to log out of your account after a normal boot up using, in my case, KDE.

Logging in normally in that screen as my usual user didn't work. It simply went back to the login screen after a few seconds. But this screen also gives you various options to log in that aren't KDE and I chose one of those. I don't remember which. It sort of worked. I get a small cli window in the upper left corner of the screen. However, I can start programs from there, including Firefox, which I'm using to post this. I have the gui within those programs. How do I get my usual KDE gui back? I'm using 11.3 and an ati 4350 card.

OpenSUSE :: Intermittent Lockup / System Freeze With 11.3?

Jul 19, 2010

I've just installed OpenSuse 11.3 on my two Sony Vaio VPCF11Z1E machines (which have a Geforce GT 330M graphics card). Both machines appear to setup correctly and behave normally, but at seemingly random intervals (of the order of magnitude of 15-30 minutes) the whole system locks up for no readily apparent reason. I can still move the mouse pointer around the screen, but I cannot click on anything, and the whole keyboard is unresponsive (including any reasonable ctrl-alt-xxx which might normally help). The only way to get out of this seems to be to press and hold the power button to shut the whole machine off (which is not ideal!)

OpenSUSE :: LibreOffice Causes Very Severe System Lockup

Jul 2, 2011

I am not sure of which LibreOffice version I am using because I can't open the ****ed program. So here's what's happening: I start LibreOffice, my screen looks unusual (it tiles a section of the screen that is the same size as the LibreOffice window (I think) across both of my monitors) and my system locks up. I am unable to use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Ctrl+Alt+F1-F8, or any other keyboard combination. No mouse click registers and the cursor acts as if the mouse is in one location (if the system locked up with my cursor over a link, the cursor stays like that) BUT the mouse still moves. Also, if I am playing music when it locks up, I can continue to hear the music and the music continues to shuffle through my playlist.

I am able to access my machine normally through ssh and the only way I've been able to fix this is to hold down the power button or pull the power. I have not identified what action causes the system to lock up, the only thing I've noticed is that LibreOffice is open every time this happens (It's happened no matter if Writer or Calc is open). The system almost always locks up upon startup of LibreOffice if the recovery window pops up, otherwise it locks up at some point during my LibreOffice session no matter what. I have not touched LibreOffice on my other machine's openSUSE installation, so I don't know how reproducible the problem is. Let me know if you need any extra information or if there are any diagnostic commands I could run.

I also found if I wiggle the mouse during the splash screen, the progress bar will begin to move, and the system will boot.Seems to be something about detecting hardware during the boot phase, and it seems to be input related.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 11.3 Stuck In Boot-up Because Of Inserted Media?

Feb 9, 2011

I have SUSE 11.3 on an Acer Aspire 3620 (laptop). When it boots up, it gets stuck and doesn't complete the process. Can't use safe boot either because I can't get past the login- when I type the password, no keystrokes appear, regardless of the key I strike. Here's how I got into this situation and a little more description of the problem. After my laptop got some nasty bugs that damaged Windows XP so badly that I couldn't use the rescue disk (that I so obediently made per instructions), I bought several linux flavors on Live CD/DVD and decided to go with SUSE. I had been using the Live DVD for about a month and everything worked well so I installed it last weekend (SUSE only -no dual operating system). Everything went well for a couple of days and I even used Yast to get Adobe Flash. Then I plugged in my MP3 Player to recharge it and quirky things started happening.

Once, the computer went in to standby and I couldn't get to the login screen - I started pushing all the keys and something worked. That evening I closed the laptop (so it should have gone to suspend) with the MP3 player attached still, and pulled it out, probably as the computer was going through the motions or shortly thereafter. (My player and usb stick suffer no ill consequences if not ejected properly.) Since then I have not been able to boot up. I powered down several times and tried. It seems to start normally with the green screen and little reptile appearing as the monitoring bar grows. Then it goes black, except the cursor's spinning wheel indicating activity. Then comes back to the green screen, with the bar still increasing and nearly making it to completion. Then the black screen and cursor-- forever. Eventually I can hear that the harddrive is no longer spinning.

Also, when the black screen appears, there is an error message that says that the configuration settings for Gnome Power Manager were not installed properly, which I highly doubt since I had no trouble in the installation, but maybe that is pointing the right direction to the problem. Anyway, now I am back to Live DVD, so that I can surf for the answer to this problem. Least that works! Before installing, when I was using SUSE as a live DVD, it sometimes was a little quirky when I inserted the MP3 Player and USB Stick- sometimes wouldn't recognize them, sometimes would, sometimes wouldn't/couldn't unmount. Firefox also would start crashing after alot of use, but I could reboot and things were fine, so I thought this might just be due to the fact that it was Live and not Installed.

I installed it with the default, KDE. I read another post somewhere with a similar problem in which the author says KDE is very bad with inserted media but I wouldn't know if that's true or not. This is the first time I've used linux, apart from a little bit of experience at work. It really has it's ups and downs, when it was working, it was so exciting, when I got hung up so soon, disappointing. The only thing I can think of to do now is reinstall and tip-toe around being extra careful about the quirks when connecting devices. Not very practical though. Thanks for listening to this long story. Will be trying to get it fixed in the evenings after work EST.

PS IF you can bear to read another line. The live DVD I bought was rather badly scratched and scuffed in my opinion. Although there were no installation errors that I could see, would this have had an unknown immeasurable effect that could account for weird behavior?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Demuxing DTV Record With Projectx (or Other Soft)

Mar 25, 2011

I just buy a cheap Belson TV with recording feature on USB. I get a "ts" file, as usual. and as usual, the sound is not in sync, due to frames dropped. Last time I did so (with other hardware), I simply played the movie throuh an other recorder to get the mpg file, but now I can't anymore. So I try to find a good "ts" editor (I have a lot of unusefull video before and after the movie). Avidemux edits but do not fix the lost images/out of sync sound.

The tools mostly advertised for this use is "projectx". I have it on my openSUSE 11.3, but I fail to make it work :-(. I find no manual, except a very old (2004) one in english, and I don't read german :-(. Do you know of any english manual uptodate and understandable. projectx runs, but no of the files I get is readable by vlc or mplayer.
