OpenSUSE Install :: Booting Stuck At Splash Screen?
Nov 5, 2010New install on Compaq Presario F700 (F756NR)The install went fine. I was able to get the Nvidia drivers working too. The problem I have is when the system boots. I get the OpenSuse splash screen, and the system just hangs.I found that if I press <Esc> and hit <Enter> a few times, the system will eventually boot. I also found if I wiggle the mouse during the splash screen, the progress bar will begin to move, and the system will boot.Seems to be something about detecting hardware during the boot phase, and it seems to be input related.

Fedora :: Stuck On Startup Screen After ATI Install
Feb 9, 2011After installing the ATI drivers using the guide here I rebooted and now it hangs at my ATI card is the X1200, I found drivers on ATI's website but thought id try the ones in the guide first but I think it caused this problem maybe they arent compatible.Im still able to type things in but it doesnt do anything.

Jun 11, 2011I burned a disk with Ubuntu on it, put it in and used the "try" function. I spent a couple hours on it and liked it. I decided to hit the install button on the desktop, it all went smoothly. It froze during the "logging off" process, so I cold booted it. Upon restart, I was prompted again to try/install Ubuntu. (Again, I've already installed it, or so I think...) Well, what the heck. I install it again, it freezes and I let it be. I come back to find it, once again, on the try/install screen. I'm currently on the "try" function again. How do I cure my lack of an installed copy of Ubuntu?

Jan 24, 2010i am sort of newbie to linux,i recently installed opensuse 11.2. i also installed nvidia card via 1 click install..
after install compositing didnt work,it said "someother program is blocking it ,type alt ctrl f12 to enable" after i hit that,my screen was stuck at blinking cursor,
so rebooted went to init 3, typed sax2 ,it showed me the options ,it passed the test screen,but after reboot didnt work.rebooted and hit sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia,again showed me option ,but didnt work.
everytime i login i see nvidia logo flashing up,but after login compostiting is still not enabled ,i have no idea what is wrong help please..

OpenSUSE Install :: Lost KDE GUI And Stuck Mostly With CLI
Oct 4, 2010I can't get my usual gui now. I had videocard problems which I was attempting to solve by uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver. While doing this the card failed completely and I had nothing on the screen at all. So I had to shut it down by killing the power. I now have a new video card in the machine but I've lost KDE. I'm not sure how it happened but when I tried to log in I was presented with the login screen one usually gets when you choose to log out of your account after a normal boot up using, in my case, KDE.
Logging in normally in that screen as my usual user didn't work. It simply went back to the login screen after a few seconds. But this screen also gives you various options to log in that aren't KDE and I chose one of those. I don't remember which. It sort of worked. I get a small cli window in the upper left corner of the screen. However, I can start programs from there, including Firefox, which I'm using to post this. I have the gui within those programs. How do I get my usual KDE gui back? I'm using 11.3 and an ati 4350 card.
OpenSUSE Install :: Stuck In IceWM And Can't Get Back To KDE?
Apr 6, 2010I logged out of KDE and started a new session in IceWM just to check it out. When I logged out of IceWM my system crashed and I had to restart. Now it logs in automatically to IceWM. If I log out of IceWM it crashes and I have to hard restart it. When I log out of IceWM it just shows a messed up nvidia logo.

After its successful completion it got into a strange situation: the boot loader identified a boot record on the hard drive and displayed the appropriate message on the screen - but then nothing happened. I have tried the install several times. The result is always the same.Login also does not work from console. Some surfing has provided the suggestion that the old Grub may still exist on the machine. Jul 23, 2010i ve run into problems while installing 11.3 x64. Installer stops at search for linux partitions... to solve it i ve had to go back to 11.2. Anyway, i have installed 11.3 on another hdd (3hdds in raid 5 had to be disconnected). When i go into partitoner (11.3) and device graph, i see two of three raid hdds ok with sda1, sda2.... but the third one is without any partitions./ if i do the same in 11.2 all three hdds are with all partitions in that graph. Anyone know the solution except not installing 11.3? .)

Jul 21, 2011I installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition
10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin,boot,cdrom,dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders.After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.
Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.
Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine.Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.
This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.
Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.
OpenSUSE Install :: Installation Stuck On Hard Drive Detection?
Feb 9, 2010I downloaded x86-64 hybrid DVD and done everything according to instructions from Installation without CD - openSUSE.After booting from USB HDD, the first page took about 3 minutes to switch menu to the installation media option then afterwards the installation got stuck on Hard drive detection (probably 2 hours before i rebooted into windows 7). Feb 9, 2011I have SUSE 11.3 on an Acer Aspire 3620 (laptop). When it boots up, it gets stuck and doesn't complete the process. Can't use safe boot either because I can't get past the login- when I type the password, no keystrokes appear, regardless of the key I strike. Here's how I got into this situation and a little more description of the problem. After my laptop got some nasty bugs that damaged Windows XP so badly that I couldn't use the rescue disk (that I so obediently made per instructions), I bought several linux flavors on Live CD/DVD and decided to go with SUSE. I had been using the Live DVD for about a month and everything worked well so I installed it last weekend (SUSE only -no dual operating system). Everything went well for a couple of days and I even used Yast to get Adobe Flash. Then I plugged in my MP3 Player to recharge it and quirky things started happening.
Once, the computer went in to standby and I couldn't get to the login screen - I started pushing all the keys and something worked. That evening I closed the laptop (so it should have gone to suspend) with the MP3 player attached still, and pulled it out, probably as the computer was going through the motions or shortly thereafter. (My player and usb stick suffer no ill consequences if not ejected properly.) Since then I have not been able to boot up. I powered down several times and tried. It seems to start normally with the green screen and little reptile appearing as the monitoring bar grows. Then it goes black, except the cursor's spinning wheel indicating activity. Then comes back to the green screen, with the bar still increasing and nearly making it to completion. Then the black screen and cursor-- forever. Eventually I can hear that the harddrive is no longer spinning.
Also, when the black screen appears, there is an error message that says that the configuration settings for Gnome Power Manager were not installed properly, which I highly doubt since I had no trouble in the installation, but maybe that is pointing the right direction to the problem. Anyway, now I am back to Live DVD, so that I can surf for the answer to this problem. Least that works! Before installing, when I was using SUSE as a live DVD, it sometimes was a little quirky when I inserted the MP3 Player and USB Stick- sometimes wouldn't recognize them, sometimes would, sometimes wouldn't/couldn't unmount. Firefox also would start crashing after alot of use, but I could reboot and things were fine, so I thought this might just be due to the fact that it was Live and not Installed.
I installed it with the default, KDE. I read another post somewhere with a similar problem in which the author says KDE is very bad with inserted media but I wouldn't know if that's true or not. This is the first time I've used linux, apart from a little bit of experience at work. It really has it's ups and downs, when it was working, it was so exciting, when I got hung up so soon, disappointing. The only thing I can think of to do now is reinstall and tip-toe around being extra careful about the quirks when connecting devices. Not very practical though. Thanks for listening to this long story. Will be trying to get it fixed in the evenings after work EST.
PS IF you can bear to read another line. The live DVD I bought was rather badly scratched and scuffed in my opinion. Although there were no installation errors that I could see, would this have had an unknown immeasurable effect that could account for weird behavior?
OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Increase Resolution Than At Least Stretch The Screen To Full Screen?
Aug 27, 2011I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

OpenSUSE Install :: Don't See The Login Screen / Get A Screen With Squares And Rectangles
Mar 27, 2011I installed opensuse11.4 few minutes back. The install was absolutely smooth. I have dual boot, Win Xp and 11.4 now. But for some reason I do not see the login screen but instead I see a green screen with squares and stripes. Login in the failsafe mode is successful. How do I fix it?
Also noticed the following,
1) Initially the splash screen picks up the right resolution 1024*768 and then it changes it to a higher resolution. This I think I can fix, because I had faced a similar problem with 11.3 as well.
Graphics Card: GeForce 7025/ nForce 630a.

So today I was booting up and decided to "type" as fedora was booting. Nov 17, 2010I removed Cairo from synaptic. Since then Ubuntu doesn't start - it gets stuck on the splash screen, which is Mac-like (since I had installed Macubuntu): I see the apple logo and the rotating wait prompt is running like hell. My pc has dual boot (Vista is my other OS) with grub2 loader.

Ubuntu :: Stuck In A Log-in Screen Loop?
Dec 26, 2010Not sure exactly how to describe it. I'll try to get a video for reference. The log-in screen comes up, I type in my password, hit enter, and the screen goes black and the log-in screen comes back up. I'm currently using a BackTrack installation (it sucks) and I'd like to go back to an OS that connects to the internet automatically, instead of me having to redo everything from a terminal upon startup
