Works fine in Windows 7 on this PC. It's a 2 week old Dell Studio 1749, with no after market software installed aside from Ubuntu (as a secondary OS). When I plug the USB adapter in, the computer locks up. Only while in Ubuntu though. Not sure what the deal is. Chipset is RealTek RTL8187. The adapter is new, fresh out of the box.

Now I set the adapter to channel 11 using airmon but running iwlist mon0 channel says the adapter is not running on any channel at all. Has anyone else experienced simular issues, and if so how was this resolved?
I have Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bits) and a wireless usb adaptor Alfa Network AWUS036H with Chipset Realtek 8187L. After a few minutes connected, the adaptor disconnects and I can't reconnect again. I search this forum but I'm not sure about what to do. Do I need to get and install another driver? I need to use the windows driver?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought the Alfa AWUS036h which uses the Realtek rtl8187 chipset. I am able to load the module and connect to any network, but its almost as soon as I try to load a page the connection drops. It never stays connected for more than 30 seconds. My other computers using the same adapter in the same spot work fine, unfortunately there not running slackware. I've tried compiling the newest stable kernel and checked the rd.inet1.conf settings.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.10 and I am trying to get my ALFA network adapter to work. It shows a few wireless locations including my brother who lives beside me. He is going to let me use his internet on my laptop. His connection is opened and I can connect to it fine... but no sites load... I've tried about 4 other open networks that I picked up and the same thing... it sometimes loads the first page but then thats it... This is suppose to be the best network adapter on the market for under $100. I have a 5dBi ant and a 2.4ghz 6dBi ant.
Oh yea, I've tired this on two other ubuntu 9.10 desktops and 1 laptop and get the same thing... I am however able to connect to my wireless router and browser the internet... but I will not have internet much longer
i have ALFA AWUS036H 500mw wireless card which uses RTL8187L chipset. Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 come with preloaded rtl8187 driver but they DO NOT work for internet surfing. However they do work with aircrack suit for injecting etc. Specific problem is: They only work with really close ranged AP, anything far and you will have random disconnects or inability to connect. So basically its unstable compared to patched driver.
To get this alfa card working for internet access, the only way currently is to use any LInux distro with Kernel 2.6.30 and lower. Starting from Kernel 2.6.31 they have made some changes to net api structure which wont let you patch the driver with the patch available at aircrack website which is normally used to make this driver suitable for internet browsing. I am currently using backtrack 4 pre final but i was going to install kubuntu 9.04 till i recieved an email from realtek with a new driver that compiles in kernel 2.6.31. I tested it on Kubuntu 9.10 and it compiled fine but i could not make it run. Under NetworkManagement for Kubutnu, the problem is that it keeps asking for WEP key and gives me the message 'wlan4 failed to connect' instantly after i enter the key, so its possible that its not compatible with NetworkManagement. I havent tried it with wicd yet, it may work........

wlan0 unknown transmit-power information. Current Tx-Power=27 dBm (501 mW). It appears to me that I should be able to increase the power. "iwpriv wlan0 highpower 1" does not work. Let me start by saying that with the previous kernel 2.6.31.5 when I opened network configuration, it didnt even recognize my card when i'd go to modules. After I updated to 2.6.31.8 it didnt recognize it until I installed the ralink-firmware 1.1.3.5. After that I could configure it using rt2870sta setting in modules. But once I restarted it would freeze after a few seconds after I could see the desktop on startup. I reconfigured the card to be 'manually' powered, but now it just freezes when I click on the access point I want to connect to. When it freezes the caps lock and scroll lock start blinking and the only way to turn off is holding the power

It is very slow when I try to go to websites or download anything using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. The max speed I can get out of it is 135 Kilobytes per second when downloading anything. But when I am on Windows I can max out 2.6 Megabytes per second. I have been trying to find a solution but have found none. When I look at the light on the wireless adapter and compare it to what it looks like on both Ubuntu and Windows. It seems that the wireless adapter light is dimmer on Ubuntu. So I was thinking it was txpower set very low. I changed it but no success on changing speed. I am using WPA2-PSK which obviously uses AES. I have also tested it while it is in WEP and when it is Open with no change in speed. Speed results Ubuntu 10.04: Speed results Windows 7: I changed the settings to Megabytes on those speed results.

I have Backtrack4 installed as a dual boot with Vista in my Acer Aspire 5315 laptop. I can connect to my access point with my inbuilt wireless Atheros AR5007EG wireless adapter by starting services/network and WICD. The problem I have is connecting my Alfa network RTL8187 wireless through WICD or wireless assistant. My Alfa network adapter works fine as I have used it with Aircrack-ng in BT4.

I am running Backtrack 4 R2 through VMware Player and have downloaded the "BackTrack 4 R2 Release VMware Image" from the Downloads page on backtrack-linux.org and it is up and running no problem. The problem is that when I plug the usb adapter in WICD network manager will not find any Wireless Networks in the area and airodump-ng is not finding anything either, it just keeps scanning channels and will not display any bssid's. I am in a college dorm and there are 20+ b/g/n networks around me but none are being recognized by my card.
I have seen alot of postings about the AWUS036NH and other cards but nothing specific to the "NEH" which is kind of frustrating. "find patch | kmod_rt3070 (alfa AWUS036NEH 1000mW) wifi adapter" is one such post that got taken over by an "NH" solution. My adapter's Chipset comes up as "Ralink RT2870/3070" and Driver as "rt2800usb - [phy0]" showing up in airmon-ng (interface wlan0)

I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

any ideas on how i can configure it manually? KDE does not detect any wifi device. .(of course since no driver is installed yet).
i used my desktop (win***)with DSL connection and installed the driver of the usb net adapter.. made it as the access point. . so my laptop detects the desktop as wifi spot.
Randomly; my computer will freeze up. I can move the mouse but I cannot click on anything. This has happened at least 20 times today. Occasionally my computer will totally just shut down. This is happening pretty often. when in ubuntu, usually while i'm browsing the web, my browser will go dim then a box will come up saying something along the lines of missing resources. the thing is, all my desktop icons will then turn to red x's and no text characters on any further boxes will show. when i restart it says grub error and takes one more restart to finally come on. i got fed up with it and switched over to windows 7 where my browser also froze and my computer froze up.

Storage HDDs: 4xWD Green 2TB (2 of the HDDs are TrueCrypt)
When I copy data from one of the TrueCrypted HDDs, the computer will freeze (display gets screwy and unresponsive). Time to screw up will vary. Sometimes its as soon as I copy and sometimes its 30mins into the copy of lots and/or large files. I'm pretty sure its not the HDD because I've used these same HDDs on an older computer with no issues. I recently put the HDD giving me issues into an external case and hooked it up to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and copied the same files that were giving me fits. So I thought it might be the system and not the HDDs So I ran prime95(or rather the linux equivalent)It ran for over 12Hrs with no issues. so I think the system is fine. What could be causing the constant crashing when copying files?
The first two times I entered the wireless key on the prompt that appeared shortly after login, the computer froze completely. ctr-alt-f1 ctr-alt-backspace did nothing. The third time, I closed the first prompt and after 10 minutes I tried connecting again. It didn't freeze, at first. The internet worked. It took about 10 minutes later for it to freeze. Now, whenever I boot up, it freezes a few seconds after login. I can boot recovery mode, but I don't know what to do from there. Heres some info I got from the recovery mode:

I couldn't even use Pidgin, Mozilla, or anything, when trying to open up another Terminal it froze as well.

Had fun times trying to run a network cable, ultimately stopped due to unknown block in the vertical wall and fear of drilling through something important. I have strong WIFI signal to this room.
I tried plugging in my Netgear WPN111, didn't work. Works on my Win7 box, and I need one on that anyway, so I'd prefer to get another wifi card, be it a PCI, PCIE, or USB dongle. I would prefer the USB dongle since I could then use it elsewhere if need be. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. The cpu is an Intel quad-core 920, with 8GB ram.
