Ubuntu :: Large File Copy Operations Freezing Up Computer?
Sep 9, 2010
Ok so I'm running Mint (not full Ubuntu), and I'm not sure if this is a problem with the FS, Kernel, what not.I'm running Linux Mint 9 - x64 - kernel 2.6.35.14 - and when I did a large file copy operation (9GB) it froze up my system until the copy operation was done. I couldn't even use Pidgin, Mozilla, or anything, when trying to open up another Terminal it froze as well.
I have a Toshiba laptop that seems to be freezing on extended operations involving the file system/hard drive. (that's kind of a guess on my part). The system has frozen during the last day or two when I:
- try a large file operation with Nautilus - try exporting a large video file from Kdenlive - try formatting the disk for a new install of Maverick (I decided that with the new version almost out, I might try upgrading in case I broke my system)
What I see is the screen freezing and the mouse does not move. As I said, I tried installing the Maverick RC from the Alternate CD (I wanted to do a minimal install). The install hung on the partitioning step and the caps-lock key started blinking (though I don't get this in other cases). I have booted into my Lucid live-cd and a Puppy live-cd to try Gparted, with the same results - the system freezes (but the caps-lock key doesn't blink). Puppy HAS performed better generally, for example I was able to complete my large file operation (backing things up!) but it is freezing on the partitioning step.
I'm trying to copy a 6Gb file across from my laptop to an external usb drive but it quits at about 4.2Gb every time with a "file size limit exceeded" error. i have checked the output of ulimit -a and there is no limit there on the file size. I'm using the Slax live Cd for this as it always gets the job done
I have some large image files that are 30 gig and more. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 whenever I try to copy one of these files to another drive I get a error saying the file is too large. I am trying to copy from an external Hard Drive or a slave drive does the same thing. I have a friend who has expressed the same issue. This must be a widespread bug.
i don't know if this is a slackware related issue but i have the following problem.I'm running a slackware64-current on my system. For my private data I'm using a QNAP NAS (Some ARM CPU with linux kernel 2.6.22), the file shares provided by NFS. I mount them withmount -t nfs 192.168.0.2:/Public /mnt/qnapWorks fine, no problems. But now, if i try to copy some large files ( > 1GiB) to the NAS share, sometimes the systems completely freezes during the copy process. I have to do a hard reset to bring the system back to work
Is there a clever way to monitor the progress (as percentage or hash) of copying a large file (using pv could be an option)?Like monitoring the progress of a copy command such as this:Code:cp linux.iso /tmp/
I am using fedora 10 in two computers. Just for my own practice I sent a file to my second computer.
1st computer IP is 192.168.1.10 2nd computer IP is 192.168.1.20
[Code]....
The file has been successfully copied to the second computer but I again want to copy that file into my local computer by still sitting in my 1st computer.
I need a tool that will enable me to manage files and other operations from another computer, access to my server. VPS and other host they usually provide cpanel and other webadmin app to do that.
I need advices on the followings:
1. FTP, allow me to access to my folder, like a web host 2. Access to config the server settings 3. Probably a GUI similar to cpanel
PuTTY SFTP syntax required to copy a file from computer 10.0.2.2, on user t0p's Desktop (eg /t0p/Desktop/file.txt , to the XP computer? The PuTTY instructions seem to make no sense to me.
Sometimes while using Open Office, trying to open a file the dialog box takes 15 to 30 seconds of spinning balls until it shows me anything. Then changing a directory takes another 15 to 30 seconds. Visual feedback on selections take several seconds, and often I find myself a couple of subdirectories down from where I wanted to go due to caching of unacknowledged clicks.
My system is usually very, very fast, as one would expect from the specs. This problem happened, well, almost all the time with kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, now it just started happening again with 2.6.32-22-generic.During these slowdowns, opening Dolphin reveals the same problem, exceedingly slow response. While this is happening, top shows the system is not busy, and the hard disk light is not flashing. Idle is over 90% and user and sys are basically nothing. The system is basically doing nothing while making me wait.
Whenever I move files from a USB memory stick or external hard drive or any other such device the file only seems to transfer 99% of the data and often during moving file operations will freeze and an offer of 'force quit' will come up (although file operations will eventually vanish with the 99% of the file being moved).
Can anything be done to rectify problems with file operations?
i just installed the ubuntu-netbook package to test out unity on my system.. on seems to work fine but how do i copy my files and folders to a usb drive ? wen i open files and folders using unity..it jus opens in a black window.. i cannot right click on any item..i can just open it.. how how do i do my normal file operations using it ?
I want to copy about 40GB - to a partiton. There are two hard drives in my box one won't boot but I can aaccess it and mount partitions and I aim to move data from it to a new bootable hard drive. Doing a simple cp copy command may not be the best way to copy and paste such a large chunk? Also I want to backup the data I plan to copy/paste using a USB hard drive to backup. But I could also paste data from the backup to the new drive instead of from old internal hd to new hd. - that's another option.
I would like to document my activity on linux terminal during some operation.I want to have text file which will contain all commands typed and output from those commands in a file.I know how to set this option in Putty but I have some problems in linux terminal.
<pre> bash | tee output.log </pre>
When I perform above spell, it only records STDOUT to file.on't have there STDIN,STDERRHow to have in this output.log file STDIN,STDOUT,STDERR
i have written block driver. its got registered succesfully.now i want to perform file opration like opening file reading/writing data into file which is stored into device.fter registration device node is created under /dev/xxx i am not getting, through this node how to open file which is stored in device.from one document i came to know that i have to use filesystem but in that doc how to use filesystem is not explained
I'm new too ubuntu so I don't know much. What I do know is, my computer keeps freezing when I try running more then a few programs. I ran a df -h test.
[code].....
what I should do next, or any thought on what the problem might be. BTW I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.
I installed ubuntu 10.10 and ever since then every now and then when i boot up the computer will just freeze. someone told me that it is because my comp is old and that i need to try an older version
I'm having this problem wherein the ppp program is altering the /etc/resolv.conf file when connecting. This, despite me having set file permissions to read-only. What could be the problem here?
Randomly; my computer will freeze up. I can move the mouse but I cannot click on anything. This has happened at least 20 times today. Occasionally my computer will totally just shut down. My computer has been almost completely rendered Useless. I do not know what to do or even where to begin. The sooner we solve this problem the better. I do college online... so this has a major impact on me and my work and progress as a student.
This computer freezes, requiring power-off, somewhere between 2 seconds and 2 hours after boot-up, most every time I use it. Sometimes I've had to power-down perhaps six times in 10 minutes. When it freezes I have a movable mouse-pointer that can select nothing. Right- click does not operate. I don't seem able to isolate a single cause. I ran a RAM check with no errors showing. Matters not which version of Ubuntu I choose when booting. I've replaced mouse and keyboard. Only running 256 meg of ram and do plan to
I am running Ubuntu Lucid with Compiz, Cairo Dock, Screenlets, on a Laptop with an i7 Nvidia graphics card. After I wake my laptop up from a suspend or hibernation I notice that my computer will freeze for several seconds every so many seconds. After looking at the System Monitor I noticed that the application that is stealing all my CPU and causing my computer to freeze is XOrg. Here is my xorg information
[code]...
I never had this problem before December. I was thinking it may have something to do with ubuntu header 2.6.32 because it was soon after I started having problems. Does anyone have any theories or ideas as to why XOrg is stealing my CPU?
This is happening pretty often. when in ubuntu, usually while i'm browsing the web, my browser will go dim then a box will come up saying something along the lines of missing resources. the thing is, all my desktop icons will then turn to red x's and no text characters on any further boxes will show. when i restart it says grub error and takes one more restart to finally come on. i got fed up with it and switched over to windows 7 where my browser also froze and my computer froze up.
So I just built a new computer and installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it here are the specs
Mobo: Asus M4a785T CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition HDD with OS: WD Blue 640GB Storage HDDs: 4xWD Green 2TB (2 of the HDDs are TrueCrypt)
When I copy data from one of the TrueCrypted HDDs, the computer will freeze (display gets screwy and unresponsive). Time to screw up will vary. Sometimes its as soon as I copy and sometimes its 30mins into the copy of lots and/or large files. I'm pretty sure its not the HDD because I've used these same HDDs on an older computer with no issues. I recently put the HDD giving me issues into an external case and hooked it up to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and copied the same files that were giving me fits. So I thought it might be the system and not the HDDs So I ran prime95(or rather the linux equivalent)It ran for over 12Hrs with no issues. so I think the system is fine. What could be causing the constant crashing when copying files?
I have just rewired my LAN using Cat 6 cables. Download- and Upload speeds to my main machine are great :However, it seems my LAN speed is very slow. when I copy large files from my main desktop pc to my mediaplayer, I only reach a speed of 3,7 MB/s in Ubuntu 10.10 using SMB protocol to connect to mediaplayer. I use a Sitecom WL351 Router that works fine as far as I can see. Using my dualboot Windows 7 I can copy the same large files using same setup (same pc to same mediaplayer) I can copy with almost 10 MB/s. I appreciate a little protocol overhead in Ubuntu, but this seems to be a little too much
