Ubuntu Networking :: RTL8187L Updated Driver For Kernel 2.6.32/2.6.31 For ALFA AWUS036H

Jan 5, 2010

i have ALFA AWUS036H 500mw wireless card which uses RTL8187L chipset. Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 come with preloaded rtl8187 driver but they DO NOT work for internet surfing. However they do work with aircrack suit for injecting etc. Specific problem is: They only work with really close ranged AP, anything far and you will have random disconnects or inability to connect. So basically its unstable compared to patched driver.

To get this alfa card working for internet access, the only way currently is to use any LInux distro with Kernel 2.6.30 and lower. Starting from Kernel 2.6.31 they have made some changes to net api structure which wont let you patch the driver with the patch available at aircrack website which is normally used to make this driver suitable for internet browsing. Refer to this thread for more info: [URL]... I am currently using backtrack 4 pre final but i was going to install kubuntu 9.04 till i recieved an email from realtek with a new driver that compiles in kernel 2.6.31. I tested it on Kubuntu 9.10 and it compiled fine but i could not make it run. Under NetworkManagement for Kubutnu, the problem is that it keeps asking for WEP key and gives me the message 'wlan4 failed to connect' instantly after i enter the key, so its possible that its not compatible with NetworkManagement. I havent tried it with wicd yet, it may work........

Ubuntu Networking :: ALFA AWUS036H Not Loading Webpages

Feb 12, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10 and I am trying to get my ALFA network adapter to work. It shows a few wireless locations including my brother who lives beside me. He is going to let me use his internet on my laptop. His connection is opened and I can connect to it fine... but no sites load... I've tried about 4 other open networks that I picked up and the same thing... it sometimes loads the first page but then thats it... This is suppose to be the best network adapter on the market for under $100. I have a 5dBi ant and a 2.4ghz 6dBi ant.

Oh yea, I've tired this on two other ubuntu 9.10 desktops and 1 laptop and get the same thing... I am however able to connect to my wireless router and browser the internet... but I will not have internet much longer

Ubuntu Networking :: ALFA AWUS036H - Adapter Not Running On Any Channel At All

Dec 8, 2010

I work for a firm of solicitors as the IT guy and I have been asked to assess the security of our network. I have recently bought an ALFA AWUS036H USB wireless adapter to help test the wireless networks. We have a few old devices that only run WEP, which I know from the start is bad. I'm trying to use the adapter with aircack. I issue the command:

[code]...

Now I set the adapter to channel 11 using airmon but running iwlist mon0 channel says the adapter is not running on any channel at all. Has anyone else experienced simular issues, and if so how was this resolved?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and I purchased a new ALFA AWUS036H wireless card. I would like to know if this "1Watt" wireless card is configured for full power. iwlist wlan0 txpower results:

Do I need to patch the new default driver that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the aircrack one following these directions:[URL]...? When I plug the USB adapter in, the computer locks up. Only while in Ubuntu though. Not sure what the deal is. Chipset is RealTek RTL8187. The adapter is new, fresh out of the box.

Ubuntu Networking :: Install Patched Driver For AWUS036H?

Mar 8, 2011

I have scoured the web for every bit of information I can find regarding installing the ieee80211 patched driver for the realtek rtl8187, to use an Alfa AWUS036H for packet injection. Error after error after error, I have had no success, and all I can find is other people with the same setup having the same problems.

Assume I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 straight out the box, so no updates have yet been made. Is someone in the know willing to post some step by steps on how to download, install and patch the necessary driver and install necessary software, including precise info on how to blacklist or remove mac80211 version rtl8187.ko in order to replace it with the patched ieee80211 version?

I know there's a tutorial on here somewhere for installing rtl8187 in an older version of Ubuntu, and in that thread, the people with Ubuntu 10.10 all seem to be having the same problems.

Ubuntu Networking :: Alfa AWUS036NH Can't Driver Compile?

Jun 5, 2011

I have a Alfa AWUS036NH that I have downloaded the lastest drivers from Alfa. I have read for 3 days straight and tryed so many fixes I cant remember them all. My problem is that it connects then after about 15 minutes the connection degrades and i have to unplug and replug in and then it goes down sooner each time. I have edited the black list and blacklisted all the 2870 chipsets as mine has 3070 chipset. once i edited the blacklist I can no longer boot into linux unless I unplug my Alfa (usb) and then once I am into the UI I can plug it back in but the wirless management client up by the top right of my screen that came with ubuntu no longer sees the card and when I do the show devices command from a terminal it doesn't show the adapter either. I also have a wired eth0 that works and a wireless wlan0 thats an internal Aethros that works. After blacklisting though it no longer shows it's name in the wireless manager but does show the connections. I am getting errors when trying to compile the manufactors drivers. I have renamed the 2 files as per several posts and still errors. I have read it works if you load the intel 2200 drivers. I got the compiler and everything but am missing the ieee80211 wireless what evers to compile and make it work. I am at wits end at what to do now to fix it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Rosewill RNX-G1W USB Wireless Card (RTL8187L)?

Apr 23, 2010

I posted this in Absolute Beginner Talk because I thought that this place might be too technical for me, but I didn't get much of a response there. Does anyone know where I can find a decent driver for this USB wireless card? It uses the RTL8187L chipset for Ubuntu 9.10?

I can connect to my wi-fi network, but I can only seem to download any data for 10 seconds to a minute after connecting. After this it still says that it is connected but updates and web browsing do not work. The connection works fine on my windows partition with the drivers that came with the device. I found this, old thread about the issue but I frankly have no idea what these people are talking about:[URL].. There do appear to be linux drivers on the CD that came with the device but I don't understand how to install them and the above thread seems to suggest that I shouldnt bother trying...

There is a folder titled Linux on the driver CD which contains two folders, a .zip of each of them is attached if it helps. I also found this and tried it will a lot of errors and confusing output.

Ubuntu Networking :: Realtek (RTL8187L) USB Not Setting Up Routes, Causing DHCP Step To Fail?

May 1, 2010

I bought an RTL8187L USB wireless adapter, and have had trouble getting it to work. I have managed to get it to work via manually configuringtime, but lost that configuration, and now it is once again not workingThe root issue appears to be (if I'm understanding correctly what I'm seeing) that when I connect, routes don't get setup properly, so when network manager (or WICD, which I've also tried) get to the DHCP step, my wireless router can't be reached by dhclient.

This is on Ubuntu 9.10, and I'm using the updated driver from realtek.com, btw, though the in-kernel driver was exhibiting the same behavior. So, two questions:- Is anyone familiar with this problem, and is there a fix available?- I believe I can work around it by setting up routes manually (e.g. with a post-connect script in WICD), but after staring at the "route" manpage, I'm not 100% sure of the commands. My router (a FIOS MI424WR) is my DHCP server, and is at 192.168.1.1, and route -n on a working PC (wired connection) gives:

Code:
dave@MinasTirith:~$ route -n
Kernel IP routing table

Ubuntu Networking :: AWUS036H - RTL8187 Wireless Adapter Slow

May 29, 2010

This is wireless adapter: [URL]... USB/Detail.bok I have 2 AWUS036H Wireless USB adapter that uses the RTL8187 Chipset connected to a USB 2.0 Port. It is very slow when I try to go to websites or download anything using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. The max speed I can get out of it is 135 Kilobytes per second when downloading anything. But when I am on Windows I can max out 2.6 Megabytes per second. I have been trying to find a solution but have found none. When I look at the light on the wireless adapter and compare it to what it looks like on both Ubuntu and Windows. It seems that the wireless adapter light is dimmer on Ubuntu. So I was thinking it was txpower set very low. I changed it but no success on changing speed. I am using WPA2-PSK which obviously uses AES. I have also tested it while it is in WEP and when it is Open with no change in speed. Speed results Ubuntu 10.04: Speed results Windows 7: I changed the settings to Megabytes on those speed results.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Into Updated Kernel ?

Jul 8, 2010

I recently updated the kernel of lucid from 2.6.32-22 to the ""-23 release through update manager. Now whenever i try to boot the new kernel from GRUB the screen goes black and the computer stops responding with the caps lock and scroll lock lights flashing on the keyboard.

I can still boot into ""-22 fine and keep using ubuntu.

My first thought that the problem was the newer kernel itself so I tried to update to 2.6.33-5 from [url]but the same boot problem exists within this one also.

Because it goes straight into the black screen after GRUB I have no way of telling what has happened without error messages. Would this appear in any log files and if so which ones?

i get this error message: insmod: error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 Invalid module format

I have compiled the driver using the 2.6.32-24 kernel. Do I have to re-compile with the new kernel?I'm a unix user, but not a kernel hacker, so I'm wondering if I will run into problems every time I get a kernel update? Or is this problem an exception?

Ubuntu Networking :: Kernel Headers In Order To Install NIC Driver?

Jul 8, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 with a Dlink DGE-530T NIC. My browsing in Ubuntu on ALL browsers is horribly slow. It works perfectly fine on windows and other PCs on the LAN. So I know for sure my router and my internet line is fine.I figured it could be a problem with my NIC drivers and decided to install the drivers from the CD. (All this while it was running on the default drivers that ship with Ubuntu). I'm trying to install the sk98lin drivers and my understanding of the kernel so far is still very weak. When I try to run the install.sh script it gives me an error saying :

Code:
Create tmp dir (/tmp/Sk98IknhDHEiLKnkWUSoYMTLi) [ OK ]
Check user id (0) [ OK ]
Check kernel version (2.6.38-8-generic) [ OK ]
Check kernel symbol file (/proc/kallsyms) [ OK ]
Check kernel type (SMP) [ OK ]
Check number of CPUs (2)

[Code]...

But the installation script is still not able to find it. I tried searching a few threads on google but wasn't able to make too much sense of whats going on because of my lack of understanding of the linux kernel.
