General :: Alfa Network Adapter And BT4

Apr 19, 2011

I have Backtrack4 installed as a dual boot with Vista in my Acer Aspire 5315 laptop. I can connect to my access point with my inbuilt wireless Atheros AR5007EG wireless adapter by starting services/network and WICD. The problem I have is connecting my Alfa network RTL8187 wireless through WICD or wireless assistant. My Alfa network adapter works fine as I have used it with Aircrack-ng in BT4.

When I plug the USB adapter in, the computer locks up. Only while in Ubuntu though. Not sure what the deal is. Chipset is RealTek RTL8187. The adapter is new, fresh out of the box.

Ubuntu Networking :: ALFA AWUS036H - Adapter Not Running On Any Channel At All

Dec 8, 2010

I work for a firm of solicitors as the IT guy and I have been asked to assess the security of our network. I have recently bought an ALFA AWUS036H USB wireless adapter to help test the wireless networks. We have a few old devices that only run WEP, which I know from the start is bad. I'm trying to use the adapter with aircack. I issue the command:

[code]...

Now I set the adapter to channel 11 using airmon but running iwlist mon0 channel says the adapter is not running on any channel at all. Has anyone else experienced simular issues, and if so how was this resolved?

General :: Switching Between Windows Would Cause A Network Adapter To Stop Being Recognized?

Feb 15, 2011

I am using Linux and Windows 7 on the same machine and my on-board NIC is functional under both. However, the weirdest thing happens when I browse the internet under Linux and then return to Windows; my NIC stops being recognized! This happens under Windows but also in Linux when I return! This problem is then easily fixed by resetting the CMOS, but inevitably occurs again. Why does this happen? Update The CMOS reset works but is not necessary for me. Shutting down and unplugging the power cord works as well.

I am brand new to Linux and Ubuntu. However it was very easy and smooth to install and get updated using my wired ethernet connection. I am now trying to understand how to have my wireless network adapter recognized or driver installed. I will be searching around the forums but it suggested I make an initial post as a new user. I am using an older Dell Inspiron 2200. I believe the chipset in my wireless adapter is indeed Broadcomm, so hopefully that will help direct any responses.

Fedora :: KVM Dedicated Network Adapter

Nov 27, 2010

The Fedora 13 Visualization guide mentions the ability to use "shared physical device" to give virtual guest full access to a network device. Where can I find more info on setting this up. When installing my first guest, the drop down menu didn't supply this as an option. Eth0 and Eth1 were not selectable (e.g. grayed out).Is there a better section to ask KVM related question? If so, I'll move there.

I'm setting up my first KVM guest now, played aroudn with VMware briefly. I did spend a lot of time wtih VM on mainframes (yes, I'm old)... and from my research, KVM is "catching up" with what we could do in the old days.

Hardware :: Alfa AWUS036NEH Not Finding Wifi AP?

Feb 19, 2011

I'm having issues with my AWUS036NEH USB Wireless Adapter in Backtrack 4 R2. I am running Backtrack 4 R2 through VMware Player and have downloaded the "BackTrack 4 R2 Release VMware Image" from the Downloads page on backtrack-linux.org and it is up and running no problem. The problem is that when I plug the usb adapter in WICD network manager will not find any Wireless Networks in the area and airodump-ng is not finding anything either, it just keeps scanning channels and will not display any bssid's. I am in a college dorm and there are 20+ b/g/n networks around me but none are being recognized by my card.

I have seen alot of postings about the AWUS036NH and other cards but nothing specific to the "NEH" which is kind of frustrating. "find patch | kmod_rt3070 (alfa AWUS036NEH 1000mW) wifi adapter" is one such post that got taken over by an "NH" solution. My adapter's Chipset comes up as "Ralink RT2870/3070" and Driver as "rt2800usb - [phy0]" showing up in airmon-ng (interface wlan0)

OpenSUSE Network :: WiFi Adapter Does Not Seem To Be Recognized

Aug 11, 2011

I Have an HP Pavilion G6. I recently installed openSUSE after having no luck with another linux distribution. I was told openSUSE is more compatible with laptops, so I figured I'd give it a try. I am now facing the same problem I had been facing w/ the other distribution (Ubuntu). My Network Adapter doesn't seem to be recognized by any linux operating systems. It is a Ralink 802.11b/g/n WiFi adapter. When I open the "network" tab, my home wifi is not listed, nor are any around me. In fact, I can't even open the "wireless" tab.

I've installed any recent drivers for my adapter, and I went to extensive lengths to try to solve the issue on my previous linux distribution. I don't know what output to give you from the terminal, nor do I really know any commands to look for anything. On a side note, I had been messing with my touchpad application, trying to set my preferences. I check the boxes for horiz. and vertic. scrolling with two fingers, and apply. They don't work. I check the boxes for using two finger tap to do something, and three finger tap to do something else.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter?

Jan 3, 2010

Basically a few weeks ago I decided to try Linux, in particular Ubuntu. I have it installed in my Windows 7 partition but now I am willing to take the full plunge and switch to it all the way. The only issue is I cannot connect to wireless internet. It states "device not ready". Wireless is turned on on my laptop, I am very near the source, have tried making a manual connection with the network setup. I tried the hardware tester and it found my ethernet and wireless hardware (Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter).
I went to the package thing and looked for Broadcam. I found a package but it was already installed. I tried it manually with:

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-modaliases
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

I then heard to try "sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter" and did but it couldnt find it.As stated before I am new to linux so I'm probably missing something easy I just beg your patiance as I learn this new operating system.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up USB Network Adapter?

Apr 20, 2010

I'm trying Ubuntu for the first time; it's actually the first time I've messed with Linux at all-- and, well, it's kind of intimidating. One of my hobbies is playing with dead computers, and long story short, I have Ubuntu installed to a partition on an external drive connected to an older Dell desktop with no internal storage to call its own. The only network adapter I have to spare right now is the rather wimpy USB one that came with said desktop. I have the CD with the drivers to it, but I think the Linux drivers on it are for a different distribution. Am I going to need to scrounge up another network card or adapter, or am I going to have to start sheepishly asking ridiculous questions regarding basic operation of the command console?

Ubuntu Installation :: Using Wireless USB Network Adapter?

Oct 20, 2010

I just started using Ubuntu 10.10 recently. and Im not really sure how most of this stuff works. I could probably figure most of it out myself, but I have a question about using a wireless USB stick for internet.I do not have internet on my desktop (the computer with linux on it) and the only way i can get it is by using a Dynex Wireless G USB Network Adapter.

I do not have the disk for it. and Im guessing linux doesnt have the autoinstall thing that windows has (no offense to linux, im starting to love it more than windows). I have the driver for it on my windows computer. I was wondering if i could run the driver from a usb thumb drive. If not, then how can i get the network adapter to work?

Networking :: Get USB Network Adapter To Work In Mint?

I use a USB Adapter (Arilink101 AWLL6075) for Wi-Fi. I tried the live CD and, of course, USB Adapter doesn't work. In the half hour I looked at it, I realized I forgot a lot of things. I could not even find the laptop USB. Will tring to get it to work be the typical Linux thing, where you download the drivers, do the install right, and it doesn't work? You compile drivers, set everything up right, and it doesn't work?

Ubuntu Networking :: ALFA AWUS036H Not Loading Webpages

I have Ubuntu 9.10 and I am trying to get my ALFA network adapter to work. It shows a few wireless locations including my brother who lives beside me. He is going to let me use his internet on my laptop. His connection is opened and I can connect to it fine... but no sites load... I've tried about 4 other open networks that I picked up and the same thing... it sometimes loads the first page but then thats it... This is suppose to be the best network adapter on the market for under $100. I have a 5dBi ant and a 2.4ghz 6dBi ant.

Oh yea, I've tired this on two other ubuntu 9.10 desktops and 1 laptop and get the same thing... I am however able to connect to my wireless router and browser the internet... but I will not have internet much longer

Ubuntu Networking :: Alfa AWUS036NH Can't Driver Compile?

Jun 5, 2011

I have a Alfa AWUS036NH that I have downloaded the lastest drivers from Alfa. I have read for 3 days straight and tryed so many fixes I cant remember them all. My problem is that it connects then after about 15 minutes the connection degrades and i have to unplug and replug in and then it goes down sooner each time. I have edited the black list and blacklisted all the 2870 chipsets as mine has 3070 chipset. once i edited the blacklist I can no longer boot into linux unless I unplug my Alfa (usb) and then once I am into the UI I can plug it back in but the wirless management client up by the top right of my screen that came with ubuntu no longer sees the card and when I do the show devices command from a terminal it doesn't show the adapter either. I also have a wired eth0 that works and a wireless wlan0 thats an internal Aethros that works. After blacklisting though it no longer shows it's name in the wireless manager but does show the connections. I am getting errors when trying to compile the manufactors drivers. I have renamed the 2 files as per several posts and still errors. I have read it works if you load the intel 2200 drivers. I got the compiler and everything but am missing the ieee80211 wireless what evers to compile and make it work. I am at wits end at what to do now to fix it.
