i just installed ubuntu and the apps i wish to use and well where do i start its freezing sounds crashing then my internet goes and most apps are crashing it makes the desktop unuseble. It works really well for like a haf an hour then crashes i never had this problem in windows witch i had on here before i may go back unless i can find some kind of fix.
View 9 RepliesI first noticed the problem because my wireless internet will stop working. The usb stick has its LED constantly on but it fails to connect. I have tried some methods of restarting the networking, like "sudo restart network-manager", disabling and re-enabling the wireless and networking from the taskbar applet. I tried removing the module and restarting it. It might be a bigger problem because I'll find that things will randomly hand for awhile, like opening system monitor, or running terminal commands. They do eventually run but only after several minutes. A restart seems to get everything working again, but the problem comes back at random times. I am willing to solve this right now as I have time, just let me know what info you need and I will post it.
Update: Some more info I forgot to include. I am running Ubuntu 11.04. It just froze again, I tried logging in and out but the internet still wouldn't work and things were hanging, I couldn't get file manager open. I have even tried shutting down the computer and had it stall on the Ubuntu logo with the dots loading so I had to hard restart.....

I am currently using opensuse to run a server, however I am experiencing some difficulties. Every once in a while, and I mean completely randomly. This will occur out of no where, and then not happen for five days, then occur twenty times in a row. What happens is the computer runs fine, and all is well but suddenly it wont connect to the internet. All applications are fine and everything is working. It isn't frozen, just won't load webpages. I am using a belkin 111v2 wireless g adapter and it usually works fine.
So when the internet freezes, if I unplug any usb the computer freezes. The mouse stops moving and the keyboard won't respond. The caps lock light won't even turn on. However the laser on the mouse is on, but the computer won't respond. Its like its shutting off the usb hubs. The only thing to do is force shut it off and restart until i no longer have the problem. Sometimes it helps if I open it and re-seat the ram, but that gets old. Does anyone have a solution?
I have configured a squid proxy server with @2 eth in different network subnet and with site blocking and extn file download blocking. One eth0 for office wired network and another eth1 is for office wireless network for laptop use for guest and visitors.
The problem is [URL] is an Indian government website, which is not working though this proxy server and the Internet Explorer is getting very slow and freezing the computer. In alternate I have configured a another test server with squid proxy with out any security and test the same. the problem is still with the all the computer in the network. The above website is perfectly working with Gateway configuration in TCP/IP properties in Network Configuration in MS Windows XP computers but through squid proxy its not working.
I have the 11.04 installed (see hardware below) and am getting this ticking sound from the moment that Kubuntu boots and you hear the booting sound and until I shut down and it plays the shutdown sound. It doesn't matter whether I watch online audio/video or play my music library. I still hear it. Been trying to find a solution for it for a couple of weeks, but all I've found was other people with same problem but in different releases and with different sound cards. Some describe it as clicking, echo and so forth. The interesting thing is that if I stop the song while it is playing and then restart it again then sometimes the ticking will go away.
The second problem is, if something is playing and something else happens like an alert will pop up from the OS, or I open a menu of the player. Then the song will simply freeze in that spot, like a damaged CD and will repeat the last noise heard indefinitely.
The third problem happens mostly online, but I thought I'd post it here just in case all of these are related. Anyway, if I play a You tube video and then click on another one. Then the second one will not have a sound. I have to reload that page and then the sound comes in.
Firefox 3.6.11, Chromium 6, Google Chrome 7, they all crash or freeze on me and I can't figure out what is going on. I'm on a fresh/clean install of 10.10 with all updates installed. I've tried reviewing all the logs in /var/logs/ but didn't find anything unusual although I might have missed something. I'm using the proprietary nVidia driver for my video card (GeForce FX 5500 - 173.x drivers) so I'm not sure if that may have something to do with it or that it may be my NIC card? I've gone to the NIC card manufacturers website (Realtek) for updated drivers, but the site says the drivers are built in to the kernel and there is no download available. It seems as though the only time it crashes or the screen freezes (sometimes with the lights blinking on my keyboard) is when I'm browsing the internet.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 11 on my machine, the configuration of which is: Intel Core i7 920 CPU, 3 GB DDR3 SDRAM, nVidia GTX295 Graphics Card. I initially used the default kmod-nvidia driver, but with a yum update, somehow a non-PAE kernel got installed and the kmod-nvidia driver did not get installed with it during the update for some reason. So I uninstalled the PAE kernel and associated kmod drivers, and downloaded the nVidia driver from the nVidia website. It ran just fine for a few days, and then all of a sudden, after a reboot, the X Server crashed and I had to log into the text mode, run
Code: setup and do the default X configuration. Then, I re-installed kmod-nvidia, with no luck. Sorry for being so vague about this, but I finally managed to get the CUDA driver (I need to use CUDA for my project work) to work (downloaded from [URL]). But after one reboot, the same problem resurfaced.
Now, I am in X Windows with a default 800x600 configuration using a generic visa driver, on a 23" monitor I have been rebooting my computer all morning and trying various things to get the driver to work again. I've got a fun one for you. What makes absolutely any attempt to view a flash video crash Ubuntu 10.10, both in firefox and chromium? Lately, firefox began doing this. I switch to chromium, same thing. Also, the system completely locks up after about 30 minutes online if I can get the thing to work at all. When this happens, the rounded edges of all windows disappear, the menus become unresponsive, and any attempt to open the system monitor to end the offending process results in an "Unable to fork new process, system resource unvailable" something like that.
My entire online routine goes like this: open terminal, su to admin account to enable ufw (which will not run at boot no matter what I try), su to normal, limited account, open web browser, things explode (or work for 15 minutes before freezing completely.)
I have a fresh install of Maverick on a Toshiba r700 laptop PT310A-05N011. I am experiencing constant freezing. The computer will without warning completely freeze. Can not move the mouse or even drop to a tty shell. After about 5 seconds the fan will spin up to full speed. I then have to do a hard shutdown. Every time this has happened i have been connected up to a wireless network with firefox open while actively surfing the net. This issue did not happen before I installed the wireless driver (Broadcomm proprietary, downloaded through ubuntu Additional Drivers).
I'm not sure how relevant that is though as 90% of what i do on this laptop is surfing and i installed the driver a few hours after install. This freezing does not happen in windows 7 and I have left it running prime95 overnight once in both 7 and ubuntu without error. Does anyone know what this may be, how i might resolve it or steps I can take to diagnose it, logs i can check?
I Installed compiz Plugin Today And It Was Somehow Working Good.Then a terrible problem happened.when i click the right click on my mouse it do wobly windows.i can't click anything if i didn't click Ctrl I mean i have to Press Ctrl+right-click to click Something I tried to uinstall compiz but nothing happened.

I've been playing around with my settings for ages now but I cant get GTK-recordmydesktop to record anything other than my mic. Ideally I need the mic and the computer sounds to be recorded, any ideas how this can be done? I've googled around but nothing really helpful comes up. All of a sudden this morning my computer started making these mysterious sounds. The first sound is a sequence of three notes going up. About a minute later there is a sequence of three notes going down. There is nothing in the system tray to indicate that anything is abnormal. When it started doing it I updated, restarted, updated again, and finally restarted. I did not update again after that thinking that this is not a Windows machine, so that would not be necessary.

Occasionally my computer will totally just shut down. My computer has been almost completely rendered Useless. I do not know what to do or even where to begin. I never had this problem before December. I was thinking it may have something to do with ubuntu header 2.6.32 because it was soon after I started having problems. Does anyone have any theories or ideas as to why XOrg is stealing my CPU?
I have a 2005 emachines desktop tri-booting WinXP, Puppy Linux 5.2.5, and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS AMD64. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS today from DVD and ran the update manager. The only other package I've installed is GParted. The computer has crashed twice today. Once when using Firefox and once while idling. Pictures off screen are attached.

This is happening pretty often. when in ubuntu, usually while i'm browsing the web, my browser will go dim then a box will come up saying something along the lines of missing resources. the thing is, all my desktop icons will then turn to red x's and no text characters on any further boxes will show. when i restart it says grub error and takes one more restart to finally come on. i got fed up with it and switched over to windows 7 where my browser also froze and my computer froze up.

When I copy data from one of the TrueCrypted HDDs, the computer will freeze (display gets screwy and unresponsive). Time to screw up will vary. Sometimes its as soon as I copy and sometimes its 30mins into the copy of lots and/or large files. I'm pretty sure its not the HDD because I've used these same HDDs on an older computer with no issues. I recently put the HDD giving me issues into an external case and hooked it up to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and copied the same files that were giving me fits. So I thought it might be the system and not the HDDs So I ran prime95(or rather the linux equivalent)It ran for over 12Hrs with no issues. so I think the system is fine. What could be causing the constant crashing when copying files?
The first two times I entered the wireless key on the prompt that appeared shortly after login, the computer froze completely. ctr-alt-f1 ctr-alt-backspace did nothing. The third time, I closed the first prompt and after 10 minutes I tried connecting again. It didn't freeze, at first. The internet worked. It took about 10 minutes later for it to freeze. Now, whenever I boot up, it freezes a few seconds after login. I can boot recovery mode, but I don't know what to do from there. Heres some info I got from the recovery mode:

When I plug the USB adapter in, the computer locks up. Only while in Ubuntu though. Not sure what the deal is. Chipset is RealTek RTL8187. The adapter is new, fresh out of the box.
