Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Adding Tons Of Boot Options?

Mar 29, 2010

This is no huge problem, but it is rather annoying to me. I am using the 10.4 beta, and whenever I get a large update (like a updated kernel) GRUB adds another boot option to the menu (I'm dual booting Vista and Ubuntu.) So my GRUB menu looks something like this when I turn my computer on:

GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu2
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-18-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-18-generic (recovery mode)

Ubuntu :: Getting Laptop Options For Compatibility?

Mar 31, 2011

I'm in computer sales and I have a customer that wants to replace all his macs and windows computers with ubuntu. I don't know anything about linux but I heard that there is a strong community behind ubuntu He's asked me to send him an evaluation unit so that he can test it out with ubuntu and see how well it works. I personally support his idea of going with reliable, bare minimum spec computers to do a whole overhaul. But I don't want him to deal with compatibility issues on a regular basis..I was looking at the Dell D620-D630, what are your thoughts on these machines running ubuntu?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing To A Laptop Without Cdrom / Usb Boot Options.

Jan 23, 2010

So, I have an old laptop that used to have windows/ubuntu until the drive got fubarred (no physical damage). I shoved the laptop as side as I didn't use it much anymore (it's an old, loud 2.4GHz desktop p4 in a dell--mostly toshiba--laptop. pcmcia atheros based wifi card and an ATI m6 graphics card. Laptop was new back in 2002-03 maybe). The Cdrom drive had died a while back, and it's not worth buying a replacement. The bios doesn't support boot to USB. What are my options for getting Ubuntu on there (9.10 preferably)? The drive has been formatted already, so there is nothing to boot into right now.

I can pull the drive and hook it up to my desktop (windows 7 machine only right now) via USB, and partition it from there, but I'm not sure how to get the installer on there. The MBR of the laptop drive will also have to be rewritten. Is there a way I can create a dos partition, load it with files, and start a linux install that way (maybe with grub4dos or something)?Or can I somehow boot into an ISO image on a partition? The only other thought I have is creating a floppy disk that will allow a network boot, but I haven't looked into that. I basically just want something to bring with on vacation that I can get online with. Browsing from the phone leaves a little bit to be desired.

General :: Options To Pickup Where Install Left Off And Start Adding Packages - Scrap And Re Install

Apr 18, 2011

I've got an ASUS eee1005 that I'm trying to load eeebuntu -- I've read good things about it! However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I can boot to the thumbdrive (8gig, btw) but I don't think I've got the right files on it to do the install. Here's what appears on the thumbdrive:

[code]...

I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access Sound Options

Jan 28, 2010

I had some horrible issues with pulseaudio so I deleted it and am using alsa. This is working well, however there are two issues now.

1. I am unable to access the sound options on System/Preferences/Sounds. When I click the icon it states "waiting for the sound system to respond" and that's where is stays.

2. I lost the volume control in gnome when pulse was deleted. I can see it in the system monitor as "sleeping" and when I try to initiate it in the terminal, I get the same response "waiting to the sound system to respond". Did I delete something I shouldb't have when deleting pulse? I followed the tutorial on it and did nothing on my "intuition".

Ubuntu :: No Sound And No Shutdown/restart Options?

This is a really weird issue. I'm using 10.04 and on occasion when I boot into Ubuntu the sound doesn't work along with losing the ability to shutdown via the menu. When I click shutdown it just logs out. I need to shut down my PC by using the terminal.

It's strange because the sound and shutdown work as expected most of the time. The issue is seemingly random.

Screen resolution is now only 800x600 which fills only 3/4 of available screen space and there are no greater options in System Preferences Monitors. It is also operating rather slower than the previous OS, maybe these two issues are connected? I have checked Administration for any required Proprietary Drivers. There is just one for a modem which is activated. During installation I aborted it then closed down and restarted, which may have affected the process?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Find Options Under System Menu For Sound Preferences

Feb 26, 2010

I have to use alsa for audio to work under wine (otherwise pulseaudio starts eating up processor cycles and the audio comes out horrible and distorted), but I have been unable to use the mic. The mic boost is up on the alsa mixer, and they are not muted. I cannot find any options under my system menu for Sound Preferences (which seems to get references in a lot fo help forums), or anywhere else to determine which audio driver the line in on the front uses.

I'm using an Acer laptop from a couple years ago, so support should be no problem.

Ubuntu :: No Options Working In Low Graphics Mode

Feb 15, 2011

I recently uninstalled some unnecessary libs thinking that I could work around without them. It turned out I couldn't. So I installed every single one, and it seemed like everything was working fine. But then I tried to boot, and was thrown into a low-graphics. Well I tried to boot in a low-graphics environment temporarily but it turned out X just restarted. Then I tried to reconfigure the settings, but choosing any option it threw me back into the last menu without any action being taken.

So I googled up some lines it was vomiting at me and it indeed might be my xorg not configured properly. but every time I try to reconfigure it and I look into the .conf file it turns out it is completely blank. maybe I should also note I am sporting a 64 bit bubuntu, not an NVidia though, Intel Series 4 express chipset family thing. I think it is a GMA4500MHD but not sure, what shall I do so that I don't have to reinstall my beautiful pimped out system?

However, with this configuration,if index.html is not present in the system , I am still able to see directory listing of all files under that folder myfiles. What could be going wrong ? Why "options" directive of is not working once it is placed inside <directory > of <virtualhost>? But I don't want this as I don't want other virtual hosts also to be able to access to that directory... In the main httpd.conf, I have something like

Ubuntu :: Boot Options Whilst Working With Open Firmware

May 4, 2010

I am going to attempt to install Ubuntu Linux onto an 500GB USB external hard drive. I was wondering what my boot options where as i am installing on to a powermac G5 that uses open firmware. From the boot menu, i dont have the option to boot to USB(like i can from firewire, CD or Internal HD) though i have found this page;URl...this enables me to boot from usb and works fine with Mac Os X (as i had to do this to boot from a usb stick i installed the os on when doing a spot of data recovery) but i'm not sure if it would boot into linux cleanly. I'm also unsure as to wether in instalation i'd need to install yaboot or not, and if not wether this is actualy an option o n the install cd.

Any info on whether anybody had installed a similar system, had any experience installing onto open firmware for an external Usb hard drive booting system or just any general knowledge about linux on open firmware.
