Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Adding Tons Of Boot Options?

This is no huge problem, but it is rather annoying to me. I am using the 10.4 beta, and whenever I get a large update (like a updated kernel) GRUB adds another boot option to the menu (I'm dual booting Vista and Ubuntu.) So my GRUB menu looks something like this when I turn my computer on:
GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu2
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-18-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-18-generic (recovery mode)

I just want to confirm something before I mess with the bootloader. It kind of scares me to rewrite my MBR. It appears that the grub version that comes with Ubuntu 10.10 drives its menu generation from /etc/grub.d/* when you execute update-grub. If I want to put windows first in the list, could I just rename "30_os-prober" to something like "09_os-prober" and run update-grub? My reason for this is every time Ubuntu updates the kernel, it adds 2 new entries to grub's boot menu. It's easy enough to remove these via the Synaptic Package Manager, but that means for at least 1 boot cycle, my default OS gets messed up (Windows). I have to leave it as the default for others that use the computer, even though I prefer Ubuntu.

So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file

I am trying to streamline my boot screen/GRUB Menu. I know what I want it to look like (grub_wanted.jpg), and I think I know how to get it by uninstalling a couple of things, (synaptic.jpg). Now I have too many items on the screen, and it looks cluttered to me (grub.jpg).

I'm a noob but enjoying dual booting. However, every time I run update manager I get a new vmlinuz entry and now I have multiple boot options in my grub boot menu. Now when I have like 5 ubuntu entries to move past to select Windows. and the latest Ubuntu is always at the bottom so I have to annoyingly scroll down to select the latest there. I don't really understand what the vmlinuzXXX entries in the boot folder are for so I don't want to delete them. I've thought about editing the loop in the 10_linux file in the grub.d folder but it looks like its calling a function or macro or something:

I want to install ubuntu 9.10 into other partition, but I want the win xp boot.ini file to configure my boot settings, not the GRUB. First I want to ask is it possible to install ubuntu, but add a boot entry in boot.ini? If not, then I know how to remove it, i found a file called ms-sys, with it I can remove GRUB. Is there a way to access the list of boot options from Ubuntu? I don't want to change the options, just have someone access the information, then copy and paste it in an email so I can see what the heck is going on with their computer.
The problem is this:
User has 2 physical drives.
Drive 1 has XP
Drive 2 has another version of XP on it as well as Ubuntu.
We want the computer to have the option to boot into XP on Drive 1 and Ubuntu on Drive 2. Booting into XP on Drive 2 is an option.
We can get into Ubuntu, and XP on the 2nd Drive, but not XP on the 1st drive.

I recently switched my laptop from Ubuntu 11.04 to 10.04.2, and during the process, I used GPARTED to partition the drive so that I could have both versions installed simultaneously while I transferred files and settings and such. A few days ago, I removed the 11.04 partition, formatted and added that disk space to 10.04's /home partition. However, when I boot up, GRUB still gives me the option of loading into the newer 11.04 partition with the newer kernels. How do I remove those options from the GRUB menu? I checked the Ubuntu GRUB help pages, but didn't feel confident that I could do edits without messing up the 10.04 boot settings.

I'm using slackware 13 and now i want to add slackware 13 to grub .How do i have to do it ? Slackware is great to learn because i've a lot of linux using slackware than using any other distro. But some programs are dependant on other which i was not able to install, they call it dependencies. Even though compiling from source is great but runnning the program is a problem as the program terminates may be because of some dependency not installed.The same goes with sbopkg and others ..As of now i'm thinking of installing Ubuntu along with Slackware13 as this system is used by everybody in the family. How to add slackware to Ubuntu's grub.......

I upgraded to 8.04 on AMD64 machine. I started to upgrade to 10.04 LTS using the System -> Admin -> Update manager. After packages started installing began getting MANY error popup windows saying dpkg exiting with errors. Looking at the terminal window I see a lot of "cannot utime" and it appears to be some error with tar. I saw on another forum that Lucid has a bug with tar. Now the distribution upgrade has just locked. What should I do?

I am running the RedHat 7.3 install off a CD to put the system on an IDE flash drive. The flash drive appears as /sda1 on my system during installation. When I install the bootloader from the install CD it gives me the option of MBR on /hda which I do not want do. I select /sda1 and it puts the bootloader on first boot sector (not the MBR?) Although the installation works, is what I am doing creating a bootable primary hard drive? The flash IDE drive needs to be installed in an embedded system so my installation options are very limited i.e. the system does not have a CD-ROM or floppy to boot from. Are there options to put GRUB on the MBR of /sda1 during installation? Such as, with fdisk or the "force disk primary" option? Or, doesn't it matter?

With the generous help from caf4926 and please_try_again, i was able to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 with suse's grub legacy.Now I have another problem that i'd need help on, I added a new IDE hard drive for storage and it became sda and the original sda with 3 OSes changed to sdb. Grub can't boot into any OSes except windows 7. Well, i can still boot into Ubuntu if i change the boot option from

i am running windows and fedora 12..both are working smooth...today when i switch on the laptop in morning i discovered that it automatically start windows..when again i restart it..it does not give any option to me for selecting which OS to run..i have seen grub.conf file it is right...i have done nothing...windows is booting smoothly..how can i boot to fedora 12 without reinstalling.

I've using win7 and 9.10 for a few months now. Today I decided to install yet another OS, but during installation a new grub was written to the mbr. Result: I can no longer boot Ubuntu.This is what my menu.lst looks like

I'm trying to add mandriva to grub2 and have difficulties..
Mandriva has it own boot partition on sda1 (ext3) Ubuntu boots in /boot on ubuntu's / partition which is sdb6
Mandriva / partition is: sda5 (ext4)
UUID for Mandriva boot partition is: bf53ebd1-4698-4522-ae0d-f9465aa2f0a3 (sda1)
UUID for Mandriva / is: 658bcd3e-9c69-49c9-8da1-a7e0b9723547 (sda5)
UUID for Mandriva swap is: d3bc2559-4f86-4269-bf25-c99e726c8775 (sda7)
Ive made a file which I have put in /etc/grub.d/ so each time I run update-grub2 it also includes this script.

I have installed Windows 7 64-bit, Fedora 13 64-bit and Windows XP 32-bit. I had to install the 32-bit XP for some driver issues I have with obscure devices I own. Windows 7 and Fedora both boot with no issues but Windows XP is not the in the GRUB loader as it was installed after Fedora. I have tried adding a few entries to the menu.lst file but my attempts failed. The output of fdisk -l is here

I have been helped by repo in this post [URL]..Here's a quick resume: I made changes in the grub menu for just one boot I selected the first option Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35-27-generic edited the Linux /vmlinux ro quiet splash by adding irqpoll to the end. I rebooted and the system booted correctly into the GUI.
I then tried to edit the /etc/default/grub file by booting into the recovery mode, opening a terminal, using command sudo vi /etc/default/grub and adding irqpoll to the end of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX DEFAULT="quiet splash". Followed by update-grub to update the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file
Unfortunately when I try to reboot I find that the system will not boot and hangs as before on the purple screen after a logon. I know that I have edited the /etc/default/grub file correctly because I have confirmed this by reviewing the file. So my question is why does the "one boot method" work but the edit file method not work ? I must be doing something wrong.

- Off a vanilla F11 livecd install, I stuck a 3 at the end of my grub line to boot into runlevel 3. I have been doing this for as long as I can remember (since Fedora 3). However now it seems to break and gives me a GRUB error. I press e to edit, and delete the 3. BUt it still throws and error?!?!?!?! Has this facility (ie sticking a number at the end of the grub line) been changed and why is my grub line now broken even though I've gone back and deleted the 3?
- If I install Fedora 12 beta now, will yum take me all the way into production when it goes live (assuming no killer bugs encountered), I'm guessing thats a yes?
