Ubuntu :: (About Live Cd) Which Version Has Best Performance?
Dec 27, 2010I have 9.04 on a live cd. Is it worth upgrading the cd for live usage? Would there be any performance improvements?

View 4 RepliesI've made a linux app that I'm porting to win32 winth MinGW and MSYS. It's a ticker app that reads then renders a text file to a pixmap (a tall single-line image), then it kind of scrolls the pixmap by drawing a part of it to a drawing_area, using gdk_draw_drawable() within a timeout handler set by g_timeout_add().
The problem is it works fine on linux (the scrolling is really smooth and that's the goal) but the win version is choppy and uses at least 90% of cpu resources (vs 15% with linux) like there is a big performance problem. And I'm not even sure that double buffering is set. Is it related to some mingw config or drawing_area stuff or gtk for win?
I've just upgraded from a wonderfully working v.9.10 to v.10.04 so I can install Flash and allow video to work. Apparently I can't install Flash into this older version. The performance is now unusably slow and windows move around desktop in a very limited way and cascading menus lag. I did all updates before upgrading as suggested. (The machine is a Toshiba Tecra A4)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an 11.2 laptop and thought it was time to upgrade to 11.4. I downloaded the 11.4 X86-64 live cd and thought that I would check how it ran on my 11.3 desktop. This is a core i5 760 with an Nvidia GT240 graphics card and 4GB of DDR3 ram. The 11.4 live system shows the nouveau driver. The graphics performance is terrible. In particular windows are very very slow to resize and often don't resize properly. There are also some artifacts in some graphics. I eventually downloaded Flash which did seem to work moderately well, especially in full screen mode. The screen resolution is 1920x1080. I have never seen a windowing system work so slowly
While I always use the Nvidia proprietary driver, I don't know how I can test it via a live CD. The Nvidia driver in the repository is the 270 version and I think that I have seen reports of severe problems with the 270 version so that needs to be tested too. I always install the nvidia driver the really easy way via yast
Has anyone any idea why the KDE Live graphics are so slow? I will not go anywhere near 11.4 unless the graphics system is very much faster. Is there any way to test the nvidia proprietary graphics driver without installing 11.4?
I have several server (mailserver, webserver and lot of fileserver) all are 32 bit slackware and I am satisfied! My company plan to upgrade our server and buy a 64 bit server maybe amd x3 or opteron? Is slackware 64 bit will help boost my server performance? Or will I stick to 32 bit for now?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've made a Live CD of version 10.04 on a machine running 10.04 (amd64). The disk works fine on another machine but does not boot on the machine that created it. The CD/DVD is new and works for other things so I don't think it is this. The Live CD gets to the ISOLINUX screen but instead of "Loading" the screen goes blank and the system shuts down. I've tried everything I can think of (remember the disk works fine on another machine).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to run the Live version of OpenSuSE 11.0 from a CD, I can run from the command line, only. No graphics at all. No error messages. Tried some of the other suggested fixes on other threads, but nothing worked. The machine in an old HP OmniBook.
What I really want to do is reformat the HDD and install OpenSuSE on it, but the machine has no DVD drive, so I downloaded an iso image of the live version of 11.0 and burned a bootable CD. It boots, but I can get no X-Window, or the KDE desktop. I'd really like to convert this old machine from Windows 98 to Linux, but seem to have hit a brick wall.
I want to run Debian as a live version from my USB flash drive. Does this provide the same amount of security from hackers as installing Debian as the only OS on my netbook. Windows ce would still be on my netbook?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got something that's really confusing me. I'm a total noob, but I read a fair bit about Ubuntu before I overwrote my windows. To make sure it worked, I used the Live run option, and it worked fine on my system. Everything worked, it notified me, however, to use the internet I'd have to download proprietary drivers (Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom STA wireless driver). I did it and my internet started working. So everything was fine and I rebooted and actually installed the OS. Once installed, it would not get internet, nor prompt for drivers being required. So I checked my manual and tried to do it manually: System / Administration / Hardware Drivers. It searched, and said there were no proprietary drivers. I thought that this was weird, so I rebooted my system "Live" again (even though it was already installed): and the Drivers were there again! They only show up in live, I can't get internet in the installed version. What's going on? How do I get these two drivers to show up on my actual installed copy, not my lie copy?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?
View 3 Replies View RelatedLive CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.
I have a doubt, may sound funny but wanna know whether it is possible to share DVD drive in windows [version 7] and use it in Linux system [version fedora 12]?
