I want to run Debian as a live version from my USB flash drive. Does this provide the same amount of security from hackers as installing Debian as the only OS on my netbook. Windows ce would still be on my netbook?
View 5 RepliesI am trying to install Debian Live to a 4 GB flash drive. I am using UNetBootin to extract this (debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso) file to a FAT32 partition on my flash drive. It installs fine, and shows me the SysLinux menu fine, but when i choose live(or anything else) it says"Invalid or Corrupt Kernel Image". I also tryed these other installers. pendrivelinux's Universal USB Installer. It gives me the same message. win32diskimager gives me a different Debian menu, but the same problem. Does anyone know what is wrong, and how to fix it. It is driving me nuts!
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have an 8GB Sandisk Cruzer, which reportedly works just fine booting Linux. It does have U3 still present on one of the partitions, but this should not pose any problems either. I also have a 2GB FAT32 partition for storing Windows stuff. The rest (5.7GB) I have reserved for Ubuntu. Windows reports this as an active partition, and the Ubuntu boot CD reports this partition as dev/sdb5. I have installed Ubuntu from the Desktop CD to the USB partition using the guided install (largest continuous free space) and selected the boot (grub) location on the same partition (sdb5), as I'd rather not modify my existing windows bootloader. A 300MB swap partition also exists on the drive. When I attempt to boot the USB drive from either my laptop (Inspiron 1505) or desktop (Abit IP35 Pro), only a blinking dash (or underscore) appears with no LED activity on the flash drive. Could it be that the MBR of the flash drive needs to be aware that the grub install is located at sdb5?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just tried Centos 5.2 Live starting from a 2 GB USB flash drive. Everything seems to run fine, fast, stable - except for that the persistent feature is not working. I created the USB from Windows using the Centos 5.2 LiveCD image and the current version of Live USB Creator (3.7), and declared a 256 MB persistent space.
This persistence feature had worked before with Fedora 11 but the system resulted unstable, kernel panic.... Now Centos has been solid for hours in a row... but the file where persistence should be reflected remains untouched with the initial creation timestamp. When rebooting, every change in config, file created etc gets lost.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have made several live Cd's and img for my flash drive and tried to even preview Ubuntu before install, but nothing seems to be working. it makes it to the screen that says Ubuntu with the dots and the dots "cycle" then afew seconds later, weather cd or flash drive, everything just stops and my computer freezes. Tried nomodeset and everything i could find between here and google to no avail.
cant get past that load screen. Ive been lurking on the forum for days and finally got fed up enough to post this because im fresh and have no clue what im doing when it comes to this. all i know is i want something better than windows(lol) and Ubuntu seems like its right up my alley...user, my "skills" if you will, are better than most, but Linux.its like trying to reed Greek for me.Also, computer specs...Toshiba A505-S6025 4gb Memory Nvidia GeForce 310M (from what i read i will have trouble with this) Realtek RTL8191SE wlan (also will have problems with this)
EDIT: just ran live cd with virtual box and it started the demo of Ubuntu with no problem with no options(like nomodeset) checked off... apparently i think im doing something wrong when it comes to booting the other way...
I have a portable version of Firefox on my USB flash drive. It is really SLOW. I have turned off all of the disk-caching options and have even set it to not remember my history. I only have three addons: NoScript, Adblock+, CS Lite. I could even get rid of CS Lite and manage my cookies totally manually if it means I'll have a faster GUI. Almost every time I interact with Firefox in any way I have to wait a few seconds and I get that damned spinning beach-ball (did I mention it's the OSX version?).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 Live CD on a USB flash drive using a software program called Unetbootin (from Gentoo), and I can successfully boot into the OS with no problem but I am not able to save any changes such as preferences, because once I reboot, everything I changed or installed is lost. I guess this is because the OS is dumped into RAM and all of my changes were made in RAM instead of the USB flash drive.
My question would be is there a way (keeping my present configuration) I can save any changes to the USB flash drive so that when I reboot, the changes will stick?
I'm just wondering if the method for installing to a regular drive would work for a flash drive, and still be portable? I know I could use a live usb, but I want a real installation for diagnostics and such (and just to have it). I need to be able to use Wine, as some of the utilities and programs I want to use are Windows only. I know I can just install it on the flash drive, but I just don't know if it'll work on other computers. Obviously I would be using the x86 install, not the AMD64 for maximum compatibility, and I would use 9.10 for now.

I thought of a Ubuntu live CD but have seen the HD activity light flashing when using one. That leads me to believe that some kind of use is made of the HD and that makes a live CD questionable. He wants no information on the HD even in unassigned sectors.
Maybe, better yet would be a USB thumb drive that runs Ubuntu or another distribution that will not use the HD or even require that one be in the computer. A plus with a thumb drive would be that it would only be available on the computer when it is being used so it could contain passwords etc. Of course, it would have to be removed when not in use.

I'll be placing sensitive data on the drive & need to figure out how to encrypt it. From what i've read so far, the easiest way will be to encrypt the swap, /home, tmp, temp files. Not quite sure how to do this. I'd prefer to encrypt the whole drive, but this seems quite complicated.
A while back I had been using ubuntu on a live cd after my windows partition had been taken over by a virus, which at the time I thought had been removed by my anti virus (and then took out winlogon) and I did a system repair instead of a complete reformat because I didn't want to lose all of my files. After repairing, I noticed some things like what looked like fake "this page has been blocked based on your security preferences" on major sites like ....., myspace and facebook. I ran another virus scan with a different AV and strangely it detected a behavioural software keylogger, which after looking it up seemed to be something that could only be installed with physical access to the system, which confused me. Anyway, this is when I started to use the live CD to copy some of my music, videos, pictures etc. onto my flash drive. From what I can remember, I used this USB on my main computer without problems, but the last time I used it (few months ago) I ran a virus scan afterwards, just to feel safe and it came up with a couple java exploit trojans. This was probably just coincidence and I hadn't ran a scan in a day or two, possibly even a false positive as I noticed no decrease to system performance or any odd happenings.
So, my questions are: Is it even possible for a virus from a windows partition to copy itself to a USB flash drive on an ubuntu live cd; and is it possible (if the virus was even capable of this) if I insert the flash drive into my ubuntu computer, it could do anything like transfer across my WLAN to my windows computer, or even copy its files onto ubuntu but be unable to do anything? Which brings me to another question: if I visit a website that may contain drive-by malware or a virus of any type, is it capable of acting at all, such as even trying to transfer itself into my home folder, or does it not even recognize ubuntu at all and do nothing?
Is there a program like BlueProximity but works with a file on a flash drive which will lock up the computer if it does not detect a file on a flash drive. What I am wanting to do is make certain features inaccessible if the flash drive is removed so if anyone uses my computer they can't hurt anything.

I get "permission denied." I encrypted my whole home directory and know the password, but how do I "decrypt" it or login as the partition's root so I can access the documents that way. I'm booted into the USB, but can't access the home directory. I get "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'jake'".

I want to automatically mount my flash drive encrypted by Truecrypt using a keyfile whenever I plug the drive. How can I do this? I use Ubuntu 10.10.

As I do not know the answer of my first question, I currently use following command in a startup script to mount my encrypted flash drive automatically at every system start-up.

My problem with this method is, Truecrypt always search for the drive in the same path saved in favorite drives list, e.g. /dev/sdb1. However sometimes there are more than one flash drive plugged to my computer and my encrypted drive's path changes. In such cases Truecrypt cannot mount my encrypted drive because it cannot find the drive in its path.
As a workaround I tried "auto-mount=devices" parameter. It is slow because it checks every mounted drive, and some of them external hard disk big in size. Moreover it does not recognize any mount point parameter. I'd like to mount the drive to the same mount point every time.

They have broken something in their download site and it is no longer possible to get the latest flash player in a .deb package by direct download. The FTP site is years out of date. And there is no way to get through the "help' system to contact the people running the web site.
So does some third party offer the latest flash player in a .deb package for download?

I remember being able to format a 3.5 inch floppy using MS DOS. The command was format a:/s
("a" was the drive letter and the "/s" was to add the bootable system file.)
HOW can I do that in LINUX, specially Debian 6.01 (my current version) I googled it and found a bunch of sites all offering answers.
NONE worked for me, I saw an option in a Slackware installation with a "make bootable USB stick option".
(It can be used as a rescue USB Stick also) We don't have that in Debian. How can I do that with my current Debian install?
I have several Debian USB installs on flash drives, They work great and give the user an opportunity to run and experience Debian with modifying their set-up. I am trying to set-up one that will NOT only boot and work as a live install, but will also allow me to install on the host machine right from the working USB Flash drive, if I choose to do so.
I'm trying to create a persistent live Jessie system on my 8GB USB drive.
If that matters, I'm currently on an Arch Linux system, and I partly followed what's on the relative wiki (Pages Create a new MBR for a USB stick, Manually create a USB flash installation and Install Syslinux), plus a CrunchBang post explaining how to make a persistent live USB out of any Jessie-deriving distro (like their BunsenLabs Hydrogen).
The problem is, even if Debian boots up more than fine, the system isn't persistent at all.
Here's what I did (I know some passages are redundant, but still...):
Downloaded the Cinnamon flavor of Jessie via torrentErased the old MBR

I want to move my "currently installed Debian and its all settings" to a USB flash drive. I am wondering what methods are available out there. I looked into Remastersys but it failed on my system so I am wondering if there is another method available?
