General :: Which Version Is Quickest To Boot From Live CD?
Sep 16, 2009I have used freespire and PCLinux these are both full Linux versions but they both take a good while to a) install and b) run from the Live CD, can anyone recommend a stripped down version of Linux that is quick to boot from a live CD etc but still has a good amount of featues, for testing purposes?

Dec 23, 2010I'm trying to run Ubuntu on an old laptop, a Gateway M520S-H2. The Kubuntu 10.10 live CD runs fine. Right away the menu comes up allowing you to check the CD, try it, or install it, and so on. But the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD, it shows "Ubuntu" on the screen in a logo-ish way for several minutes, then the "Ubuntu" deteriorates in an unhealthy looking way, then the screen just sits there blank forever.
So then I tried an Ubuntu live DVD. Same things. I checked both the CD and DVD for errors, the DVD with Ubuntu's checker and the CD after I burned it. Also, both disc work on another computer.
Does anyone have any idea why Ubuntu live CD doesn't work on this system while Kubuntu does? Must it be something with the GUI? DO you think I'd have more luck with Ubuntu 10.10? (worth a try I guess...)

loaded on my system. Version 2.6.30.5-43 hangs after the progress bar completes with messges labeled r8169 about the ehternet link status. Version 2.6.29.6-2317.2 boots just fine. How do I remove version 2.6.30.5-43 from the system?

Ubuntu :: Live CD Of Version 10.04 - Does Not Boot On The Machine
Jan 1, 2011I've made a Live CD of version 10.04 on a machine running 10.04 (amd64). The disk works fine on another machine but does not boot on the machine that created it. The CD/DVD is new and works for other things so I don't think it is this. The Live CD gets to the ISOLINUX screen but instead of "Loading" the screen goes blank and the system shuts down. I've tried everything I can think of (remember the disk works fine on another machine).

But when I configured the WPA type, the connection seems established but shows the status "TKIP - Key Absent" in the security dialog box. Anyone faced this problem? Oct 23, 2010Since open office is now bought by oracle I am confused about the state of the latest version of OO version 3.2 I think. Would it be legal to install that version on a computer. Oracle perhaps made a bummer with this. The real dev community is thrown out and we are again looking at corporate greed taking precedence for their own profit rather than development of technology. I have high hopes from libre office but then one more open source product (it was not sun's to begin with remember) being swallowed by a corporate.

I have a list of .zip files that have a version number in the filename (i.e. sudoku-134.zip, sudoku-176.zip, sudoku-203.zip, etc). I would like to have a script that will find the latest version of each game, and unzip it. I want the next to latest version left untouched. But anything older, I would like the unzipped folder deleted (But leave the .zip file)
Here's what I have so far:

Jan 21, 2011I have install windows XP and Fedora-14-X86_64 on dual boot, I want to run other OS on fedora by using Virtual machine. I have download and installed VirtaulBox-4.0.0 successfully but I cannot able to start it. I got error about Vbox driver not installed [error code:1908]. I have also installed DKMS package, but also didn't work.
Finally I found the actual problem was kernel not compatible with latest version of vbox and I need to update my kernel-headers. I also meet that solution by using command: yum install binutils gcc make patch libgomp glibc-headers glibc-devel kernel-headers kernel-devel and its work fine, this command download and install the kernel compatible VirtualBox-3.2.* and now its works fine.
But problem is that when I booting my PC, it shows 3 options for entering OS rather then 2.
1. Fedora-14 (2.6.35.10.74.X86_64) [which is new one/updated after using that command]
2. Fedora-14 (2.6.35.6.45fc14.X86_64) [which is new one/updated after using that command]
3. Other [windows XP]
How can i delete that old version- No.2?

Feb 10, 2010I am new to Ubuntu, I installed the latest version and when I turn it on I get like a distortion of the screen, I would gladly post a picture of it but I have no where to post it here. I am running Amd Opteron 175 with DFI Expert and GeForce 7800GT I made a partition on my Vista. I uploaded the pictures as you can see it has the distorted window in background and it just sits there saying 128%.

Sep 3, 2010Couple of days I go I setup VLC using Kubuntu's graphic software manager, and installed the 3 plug-ins, one of which was related to pulse. After doing this sound stopped working in flash videos. I had read, not sure where, that Kubuntu didn't use pulse (which slipped my mind when setting up VLC).
So I make the mistake of removing everything which had pulse in it's name (again, via the graphic software manager). A message popped-up saying that some packages needed to be removed/edited (a LONG list, a big clue that I was doing something stupid I guess). I let it run it's course and after that it won't boot properly.
If I boot it normally it hangs at the Kubuntu screen with the five dots filling endlessly. If I press F1 it's stuck at "checking battery status."
Recovery mode boots, but the recovery option does nothing.
So I was wondering if I could boot into recovery mode and go into the terminal and add a live USB as a repository for apt, and try to salvage the install?
Or should I admit defeat and reinstall?

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

Dec 30, 2010A month ago, my HP Mini 1035NR, with a Windows XP system died. Since then, it won't boot into Windows. I tried installing Ubuntu via a bootable USB with no luck. I have finally been able to create a working bootable USB running the Gnome version of Open Suse 11.3.
Aside from not picking up my ethernet connection to the Internet, my bigger issue is I can't install Open Suse from the USB. I get a message when I try to install that there may not be enough memory and it hangs at the section where you choose your time zone. I would like to install the latest version of Open Suse with KDE. Is there anything else I can do?

I've rerun sensors-detect and restarted module-init-tools, but the temperatures still don't display. If I run sensors from a terminal, the CPU core temperatures are displayed correctly.
