Ubuntu Installation :: Use The Desktop Version Or The Netbook Version?
Feb 5, 2011
Just got my AW M11x and I am following a thread on installation issues and work around. My question is should I install the desktop version or the Netbook version? Not sure the best location to post, if incorrect please move accordingly Wanting to run gimp, open office, wine to access MS office (use for school) and possibly install photoshop for raw work gimp cant handle.
i would like to replace my Ubuntu Desktop version with the Netbook version. I dont mind losing my current data on the desktop version but if there is a way for me not too i would love to know
I had the desktop version of ubuntu installed on my netbook previously. Then I got the 11.04 update which changed my desktop to what I think is the netbook version of ubuntu, which I highly dislike. Is there any way to change it back?
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my Lenovo L420 laptop. Now my friend told me that if I had installed laptop version on it then it would have recognized events related to laptop like closing down the laptop screen and all.
Q1. Is there any way by which I can upgrade it to laptop version?
I'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 on my Acer Aspire One A0751h, but when I boot from my USB drive (I have multiboot ISO) I only get Ubuntu Desktop 10.10. I've tried the same USB drive on two other laptops - one netbook and one mobil workstation - and both of them boot into the Netbook Remix. Is there any rational reason for this or???
I am making the switch to Linux and I really love Ubuntu. My DVD player isn't working, so I'm using my flash drive. It was too small for the desktop installer, so I used the netbook. I'm installing it as I type this (having the browser thats available for browsing while installing is awesome!)
Is there a way to upgrade to move to the desktop version after I finish? Also, what's the difference between the two. Links are fine. I tried google, but my google-fu must not be too strong today.
I recently discovered the U. for netbooks. I have an older laptop that originally came with Xp and couldn't install more than the RAT version of U. Will U. Netbook version run well?Oh! and, I have a linksys usb wifi made for windows, will it work on U. Netbook?
Ubuntu 10.04 freezes on installation. When I try to install Ubuntu 10.04 for netbook it will freeze when it starts the installation. Generating locales en_US.UTF-8 and nothing happens, it will be freezed here?what can i do?
will going from 10.04 desktop to 10.10 netbook mean i have to reinstall everything? also, does the netbook version support mounting of networked drives?
my laptop currently has 8GB of RAM and I wouldn't want that going to waste. I have read about the issues with flash on the 64 bit versions of buntu. Would you recommend going 64-bit or 32-bit with PAE? also, does the 10.10 kernel have PAE enabled by default?
I'm trying to install the desktop version on my laptop but i'm having an issues. I wrote the .iso file on a CD and restart my pc to boot. So -> the pc founds the medium, i'm choosing the language, i'm choosing "Install ubuntu" and nothing happens. The dots srarts to blink and that's all. When i press anykey opens an cmd promt (something like that) and there's a lot of errors - for example: ... file failed to open due to unknown user id", some files are missing and so on. I tried "try ubuntu without installing" but the same thing. I hear a sound (i guess this the "srart sound" of ubuntu) and that's all. The orange screen, the icon in the middle and the blinking dots. I made two CDs - one burned with win 7 integrated soft - right click and "burn disk image", and other burned with infra recorder. Nothing changes.
Why does it say that the 64 bit version is not recommended for daily desktop use?I am so excited to finally have a computer of my own that if fast enough to run things like Ubuntu..
Theres no option to install netbook version of ubuntu so which should i get ? the ubuntu 11.04 desktop version is sooo slow as it wwill only let me install 64bit
I want to uninstall the above mentioned Ubuntu from my Toshiba laptop (3 months old/new?),since i already have the same Desktop version. I have tried the CD booting of XP and a message(blue screen)appeared telling me to check for viruses and to rule out a corrupt disk (The laptop never had a Windows installed on it!The laptop has no internet connection of any sort and that's the SIT.REP.as the Green Berets (YOU) would like to know! i need it to install Linux Mint(THE BRAND NEW ONE)alongside the XP!
I successfully installed fedora live CD KDE version on virtual PC. but I can't install the live CD Gnome desktop version. details: I just add vga=0x32D on boot, no problem booting after that. I am now log-in as live user, but I can't find the shotcut for installation on desktop "install to hard drive" but using the terminal, there's a file under Desktop, 'liveinst.desktop" I tried running it, graphical installation will appear, but during copying to hard disk, it says bad media.
I installed U10.10 desktop version on my asus laptop and having problem with sis graphic card. Resolution is 840*600. Is the problem verson of installation or not. I don't want to install it again if it is not necessary

I have a fedora 11 with kernel package: kernel-PAE-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686
I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?
I have installed OpenSUSE 11.3 64 bit and want to install VMWare workstation 7.1. I have run the install script for VMWare without any issues. When I start the VMWare Workstation I get a window saying this: Before you can run VMWare, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. Kernel Headers 2.6.34-12-desktop Kernel headers for version 2.6.34-12-desktop were not found.
I decided to try ubuntu on my netbook and it seems to have set up well other than I cannot see any wireless connections. I can't click on connection information. The blue light is on, indicating that my netbook's network card is on.
is there another version that would work better with an hp mini? Otherwise the netbook is rather pointless
I'm using an Acer Aspire One with Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3. I couldn't find any directions on how to dual boot with a netbook or more specifically my netbook.
I'm not exactly a computer pro. I had copied Ubuntu netbook on to a USB with the program given at Ubuntu.com. I plugged it in and booted it via F12 on my Alienware M17x and I chose to try it. When I selected to try it, it wouldn't work at all and I sat there for about an hour. I turned the laptop off, and now it says I'm "Missing" the OS. Which means my Windows 7 is gone.
My friend had told me to do something with Gparted, but it didn't help. He did say that my files could possibly still be there (which would be AMAZINGLY awesome. I just wish I could get things back to the way they were yesterday. I need to know what is wrong with the partitions though, since I think that the errors are related to the partitions. It is a Solid state drive. My priorities are:
1. Save my files (if they are there still) to an external HD 2. Re-install Windows 7 (if needed) 3. Install Linux alongside Win7
