Slackware :: Will 64bit Version Boost Server Performance?
Jun 24, 2010
I have several server (mailserver, webserver and lot of fileserver) all are 32 bit slackware and I am satisfied! My company plan to upgrade our server and buy a 64 bit server maybe amd x3 or opteron? Is slackware 64 bit will help boost my server performance? Or will I stick to 32 bit for now?

My desktop tower is pretty old and runs horribly slow nowadays. I only use it for a little internet browsing and to upload photographs etc. It runs on 1Gb RAM and has the celeron(R) 2.4GHz processor. What is the best way to boost overall performance speed/response times? would a better processor be viable?

I've made a linux app that I'm porting to win32 winth MinGW and MSYS. It's a ticker app that reads then renders a text file to a pixmap (a tall single-line image), then it kind of scrolls the pixmap by drawing a part of it to a drawing_area, using gdk_draw_drawable() within a timeout handler set by g_timeout_add().
The problem is it works fine on linux (the scrolling is really smooth and that's the goal) but the win version is choppy and uses at least 90% of cpu resources (vs 15% with linux) like there is a big performance problem. And I'm not even sure that double buffering is set. Is it related to some mingw config or drawing_area stuff or gtk for win?

I just wiped my hp 6730b laptop after having done something that killed my previous fedora 14 install but now the graphics are all choppy. The previous install was a 12 to 14 upgrade that ran fine after only minor tinkering to straighten out some leftover stuff. The new one is a net-install of the 64bit version. But now X is all choppy and 2 processes seem to be using some cpu when X starts up: 'kondemand' and 'migration'. Eventually the screen will start to flicker but it'll keep running 'normally'. I am guessing that it is somehow related to the intel driver seeing how 3d (compiz) is not working either. So far all I changed is the default runlevel to 3 but it makes no difference if its in 5. I tried making a new config with X -config but then X does not start at all. system-config-display has been removed so I cant try fiddling with that either.
Hopefully all the required / useful info:

Now, I'm ready to run my program, and my code is based on 32bit version. So I run the program on Ubuntu 9.10 32bit. And I got running time for 48s. But that's a bit slower than I expected; the program has bunch of File I/O processing but the result(48s) just doesn't make sense compared to given initial data set. So I just run the same program and same initial data set on Ubuntu 9.10 64bit ver. Then, bang!! it took 1.4s to finish the job.
Do you have any thoughts what kind of fact might make this significant difference? The differences b/w those two OS are "32 vs 64" and 32bit version has Java SDK, Eclipse, Apache2, Mysql, PHP, CGI, and python. We-server service is running but because I'm not really running web server. Did the result come from these background programs?
-- I tested it on the both OS in the same situation as possible as I can.
(reboot->test)
-- BTW 64bit one doesn't have those programs. I just installed on my external hard drive, so it's literary PURE one. (32bit one also in the same HDD)
-- I run these Ubuntus on VMware

I've just upgraded from a wonderfully working v.9.10 to v.10.04 so I can install Flash and allow video to work. Apparently I can't install Flash into this older version. The performance is now unusably slow and windows move around desktop in a very limited way and cascading menus lag. I did all updates before upgrading as suggested. (The machine is a Toshiba Tecra A4)

I've been trying to compile newsbeuter-2.3 on a Slackware 11.0system. I think the problem is an #include <tr1/memory> line. Ihave a "boost" package installed from slacky. Have tried #include <boost/tr1/memory> but compiler can't find that either.
I get the following errors:

In the past I was informed that I should be using X86 64 bit for my system. On looking into updating to 10.10 I only found the AMD 64 offering. Has the X86 64 bit been dropped and if so will the 64 bit offering be suitable for my use?

Does slackware run slower on amd cpus compared to intel? I just read some articles on compilers optimized for intel cpus via the 'GenuineIntel' check. CPUs' not bearing intel cpuid will be run in non-optimized mode. It's part of Intel & AMD anti-trust settlement.
Just asking if someone could elaborate on the matter.

Since I upgraded to Slackware64 13.1 my system feels slower than before (Slackware64 13.0).I paid attention to the documentation (changes_and_hints.txt, readmes etc.) regarding the update. The only thing I changed is, that I used the KDE-4.4.4 packages of AlienBob instead of the KDE-4.4.3 packages of Slackware.
But since AlienBob at his blog wrote, "Although it seems (by looking at the changelog between 4.4.3 and 4.4.4) that there were no spectacular updates in the latest stable KDE Software Compilation, I got some feedback that 4.4.4 does feel snappier than the 4.4.3 which is part of Slackware 13.1.", I thought it would be a good idea to use these packages.
I also recognized a few crashes in KDE, which I didn't have before so often. Therefore I moved the .kde to .kde_bak and configured kde new. This improved the behaviour regarding the crashes, but it still seems not that stable to me like the KDE 4.2 in Slackware64 13.0.Did anyone recognize similar problems after the upgrade, or can give some hints how to solve it?

I bought a new laptop HP Pavillion dv3-4170ee that has Core i5 2.53ghz dual core with hyper threading, intel hd graphics and Ati Radeon HD 5470 512 mb dedicated. It came with windows 7 64bit. It also has 6 gb ram(2gb in first slot + 4 gb in the second one).I installed slackware 13.37 64 bit. It installed just fine. installed lilo onto mbr. When it boots up it shows the slackware screen. I am able to boot into windows just fine. When I select Linux it boots into linux bios data check successful. lots of stuff goes on the screen the normal linux boot stuff. and then it goes to the next screen and stays blank
Nothing happens and even the hard disk light is not blinking.By the way the HDD is Western Digital.

I have Fedora 11 installed on two different machines, one 32 bit and the other 64 bit. If I play an mp3 file in the 64 bit system---it doesn't seem to matter which player I use---then I can only start, stop, or go to the beginning or end of the selection. I can't advance the stream to some intermediate point. The slider display showing the position is greyed out. The same programs on the same file in the 32 bit system work normally and allow me to advance the position by using the mouse with the slider. This may have something to do with how gnome is configured on the two machines, but I can't figure out what is different.
