Fedora Installation :: Can't Install Live CD Gnome Desktop Version
Jun 11, 2009
I successfully installed fedora live CD KDE version on virtual PC. but I can't install the live CD Gnome desktop version. details: I just add vga=0x32D on boot, no problem booting after that. I am now log-in as live user, but I can't find the shotcut for installation on desktop "install to hard drive" but using the terminal, there's a file under Desktop, 'liveinst.desktop" I tried running it, graphical installation will appear, but during copying to hard disk, it says bad media.

Does the gnome live cd install a "live version" of OpenSUSE or a "standard version? I used knoppix 4.x long time ago... I don't want to end up with a default user called linuxuser and not be able to save any changed unless I created an additional read/write partition.

Im trying out popular distros running on Gnome.. to see possible installation candidate And having one problem with OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome out of the box...I can not enable desktop effects.. it says it can not be done on my hardware configuration...My hardware: AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+, Ati Radeon X600 256MB, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD...In every other distro I tried from live CD.. I could enable desktop effects. Now I have tried update in that live session.. and when gone to that software application it asked and I downloaded 130Mb of software.flash player..etc... but I still did not have desktop effects... So my question is can it be done with my configuration... Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? No problems in Fedora, Ubuntu...

I'm trying to install the desktop version on my laptop but i'm having an issues. I wrote the .iso file on a CD and restart my pc to boot. So -> the pc founds the medium, i'm choosing the language, i'm choosing "Install ubuntu" and nothing happens. The dots srarts to blink and that's all. When i press anykey opens an cmd promt (something like that) and there's a lot of errors - for example: ... file failed to open due to unknown user id", some files are missing and so on. I tried "try ubuntu without installing" but the same thing. I hear a sound (i guess this the "srart sound" of ubuntu) and that's all. The orange screen, the icon in the middle and the blinking dots. I made two CDs - one burned with win 7 integrated soft - right click and "burn disk image", and other burned with infra recorder. Nothing changes.

I have a problem when I power on my laptop (EliteBook 8530p) with fedora core 12 live cd in my optical drive. It simply will not start. The two numlock and capslock leds are flashing regularly and the screen is either blank, or it just freezes at the main menu (from which I can enter bios, etc). A HP assistant suggested that I should update my bios, but it's the same. I have also tried to install Mandriva 2010, which the laptop reads and boots up to a certain point when the screen goes blank, with the exception of a scroll flickering at the upper-left corner of the screen. Windows 7, FC 11, Ubuntu have been working till now, so I am inclined to believe that there's no problem with those particular cds (especially given the fact that I have written 3 or 4 with each linux image - fedora and mandriva).

I have just been trying to fix a friends comp, they had Windows crash, and it wouldn't reinstall properly. So I thought I'd put Ubuntu 10:04 on it instead. I burnt the CD today from an ISO that I've used perfectly fine in the past. When I finally got it to boot into the trial desktop. The install button on the desktop wouldn't work. Everything else that I tried to run would run fine. is there some way that I can run it from the terminal or could this indicate a fault in the Live CD?

I'm attempting to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's old desktop. Her gateway laptop's motherboard just died on her, and until we can figure out a real solution she's using this old desktop that was running Windows XP. It was her parent's and it's an eMachine. So, meh. It's whatever.
I have an Ubuntu disc from Canonical and one from burning the .iso image. I've been fighting with it all evening trying to just get the thing to boot. It starts up, shows a purple screen with an Ubuntu logo on the bottom. If I don't hit Enter it will go into a crazy cycle of black screen command line things. It says various errors, but moves too fast for me to see anything that is actually happening. However, if I do hit Enter it takes me to the "Try Ubuntu without installing, etc." screen.
No matter what I hit from the selection, it goes to the black screen with random command line entries floating about. Various error, various actions being done. If I hit to run as Live CD or Install it, it will eventually stop and say "Welcome to Ubuntu! *insert website address here*" and give me the chance to type in commands.
ONCE during the power on/power off cycles of me fighting did the Live CD actually run. It ran nicely, and I clicked the icon to install Ubuntu and it got to 49% complete and said there was an error with the disc. I installed Ubuntu on my desktop last week with the same disc flawlessly. It ran with the real Ubuntu disc, the burnt ones do nothing.
I could tell you system specs but Windows was erased during the Live CD stint and there are no stickers on the front to tell you. But I can crack it open and look if needed.

I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my Lenovo L420 laptop. Now my friend told me that if I had installed laptop version on it then it would have recognized events related to laptop like closing down the laptop screen and all.
Q1. Is there any way by which I can upgrade it to laptop version?
Q2. What are the differences between both?

I had a request from one of my colleague that he would like to try my Fedora 12 installation which was set up recently. However, he said he would like to start with the KDE Desktop while my normal login uses the Gnome. Is it possible to have different desktops for different users (well I believe so)? If yes, I would be appreciated if some one will provide me guidance in doing so as I am quite new to Linux.

I have two desktop environments installed on my Fedora pc. Here it is
[Code]...
Is it still possible to install other desktop environments despite already having installed KDE and GNOME? If I happen to install other desktop environments such as XFCE, LXDE, CDE, EDE, UDE, will I be able to use one particular environment by disabling the rest whenever needed

When trying to run the Live version of OpenSuSE 11.0 from a CD, I can run from the command line, only. No graphics at all. No error messages. Tried some of the other suggested fixes on other threads, but nothing worked. The machine in an old HP OmniBook.
What I really want to do is reformat the HDD and install OpenSuSE on it, but the machine has no DVD drive, so I downloaded an iso image of the live version of 11.0 and burned a bootable CD. It boots, but I can get no X-Window, or the KDE desktop. I'd really like to convert this old machine from Windows 98 to Linux, but seem to have hit a brick wall.

I want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).
I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?

recently built a F14 x64_86 system on a dual core X64 AMD based box. Later I installed the drive in a dual Xeon dual core box. I have the os set to boot to run level 3 then after I login I run telinit 5 to get to X11-Gnome desktop. However, when I boot the xeon machine I am able to login and run shell commands, such as yum update, fdisk -l etc. But when I try to telinit 5 the process hangs, hitting the power button, the machine goes through it's shutdown script.
I haven't tried transplanting the drive back into the original machine. just to test it's integrity, but I suspect it not corrupted. Not sure this matters, but running it's nvidia's driver for the video card. I think I can also boot to nouveau, but not 100 % sure with out having to deinstall the nvidia binary. both boxes uses the same video card a nvidia 8800 gtfwiw, I can boot my i386 f14 usb thumb drives that have the generic video driver installed.

im trying to install ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386 version, but i simply cant do it! I have tried for hours now. I boot my computer, the cd-room boots, i choose language from the list and press install ubuntu, after that i see the ubuntu logo blinking and in few minutes it gets black and shows "Input Not Supported" and its just bumping around the screen! I had a feeling that maybe my monitor (ASUS) does not support ubuntu so i tried with a very old syncmaster monitor, but similar message appeared! What could be the problem?
