I've just upgraded from a wonderfully working v.9.10 to v.10.04 so I can install Flash and allow video to work. Apparently I can't install Flash into this older version. The performance is now unusably slow and windows move around desktop in a very limited way and cascading menus lag. I did all updates before upgrading as suggested. (The machine is a Toshiba Tecra A4)

My last laptop was replaced (I gave it to my step-dad, his laptop broke and I bought myself a new one).
I am running Squeeze (as I was on my other laptop) and everything is fine except for the games. On my other laptop games like OpenArena and Warzone 2100 ran perfectly fine, but on this laptop, they are impossible to play. The game will open, but everything is so slow and choppy that it takes a couple of minutes to even move the cursor to the exit game buttons.
My current laptop is an HP ProBook4525s with the current specs:
AMD Athlon Dual-Core P340 2.2 GHz processor
2GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics Card
I'm not sure what other information to put here, I've tried searching how to fix this and most people say to lower the resolution and details for the games but that doesn't work, heck, even Tux Kart is too slow to play!
When I installed squeeze I was informed that I didn't have the rtl8168d-2.fw firmware for my laptop, I'm not sure if that helps here at all (can't seem to find what it is for, the only things that google gives me are very technical with fixes that involve re-compiling the kernel).
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my new laptop, and the performance of games is really choppy.
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics
Laptop: Lenovo Ideapad z570 with i5 2nd gen.
3D games such as Supertuxkart and Armagetron Advanced keep pausing for 1 second every 3-4 seconds.
2D games however seem to work fine.
Could this be a problem with drivers? My older computer, another one with intel integrated graphics, ran these games excellently (with ubuntu 11.04).
I just wiped my hp 6730b laptop after having done something that killed my previous fedora 14 install but now the graphics are all choppy. The previous install was a 12 to 14 upgrade that ran fine after only minor tinkering to straighten out some leftover stuff. The new one is a net-install of the 64bit version. But now X is all choppy and 2 processes seem to be using some cpu when X starts up: 'kondemand' and 'migration'. Eventually the screen will start to flicker but it'll keep running 'normally'. I am guessing that it is somehow related to the intel driver seeing how 3d (compiz) is not working either. So far all I changed is the default runlevel to 3 but it makes no difference if its in 5. I tried making a new config with X -config but then X does not start at all. system-config-display has been removed so I cant try fiddling with that either.

having not experienced the issues with jaunty and intel display cards, i can't say whether this is a real problem or not. from what i can tell, mtrr is not a problem.
on my new dell mini 10v w/ intel 945gme and a fresh install of karmic unr, video playback performance is only so-so.
most videos-style flash video is decent. local h.264 playback from .m4v and .mov containers is flawless. but streaming flash video originating as h.264 is dismally choppy - this includes vimeo and hulu-quality streaming video.
I've made a linux app that I'm porting to win32 winth MinGW and MSYS. It's a ticker app that reads then renders a text file to a pixmap (a tall single-line image), then it kind of scrolls the pixmap by drawing a part of it to a drawing_area, using gdk_draw_drawable() within a timeout handler set by g_timeout_add().
The problem is it works fine on linux (the scrolling is really smooth and that's the goal) but the win version is choppy and uses at least 90% of cpu resources (vs 15% with linux) like there is a big performance problem. And I'm not even sure that double buffering is set. Is it related to some mingw config or drawing_area stuff or gtk for win?

Whenever I play flash video or a video in VLC the pictures seems "choppy" and slow as if it was laggy. What could be causing this? I am guessing its a video issue? Maybe something todo with refresh rates and stuff like that.
Streamed videos on various Web sites are slow and choppy for me. The problem seems to be a cross-browser issue, today I did an informal test of various sites I frequently use on both Mozilla Firefox and Chrome. The results of my informal test are below, and as you can see they are mostly the same for both Firefox and Chrome.

You tube-- no problems once video loads, but loading is slow
Daily show-- very slow loading, sound ok, video extremely slow, choppy, unwatchable
ESPN--slow to load, sound ok, picture is very slow, choppy

Running ubuntu 9.10 on an hp pavilion 2000 laptop, with 2.5GB of ram and a dual core (i think). Works at perfect speed with everything, except when I'm tyring to watch a flash video which slows everything down and gets choppy, especially when in full screen. From looking around online I see some people blaming adobe and some people blaming NVidia drivers. Get the impression the problem is a bit of both.
Funny thing is it worked a lot better with the drivers that installed automatically with the ubuntu install, soon as I put the updated nvidia drivers on it started screwing up. how I go back to those default drivers? Tried unchecking the drivers listed in Hardware Drivers, but when I restarted was stuck in very low resolution, so I'm guessing that's not the same as the drivers used after installing the OS.
I'm having issues playing HD videos ( some with 720p level, much more apparent with 1080p level one) The video appears to slow then becomes choppy, becoming de synced from the audio that carries on as normal. This occurs with both VLC player and XBMC, though the latter is better. My specs: Fedora 12 3.2 Ghz P4 processor 1Gig ram Radeon 9800 xt gfx card (I couldn't get the 9.3 ati driver to work)

View 1 Replies View RelatedFirst of all, apologies if this is not the correct place to post this. I recently installed openSUSE 11.2 (Gnome, 32bit) on my newish PC. It is an Acer Aspire X3200 (AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core, 1.8 GHz, 4096 MB, NVIDIA GeForce 8200 Integrated, can provide detailed specifications if needed). I've to say I am very disappointed with the results so far! Sorry to say this but I'm having a whole load of problems that I never had when I had Vista or with current Win 7. Here are the issues:
1. Slow network performance. I've disabled ipv6 but it is still the same. Not only when I use Firefox, it is also slow when I use console based programs. 2. Instability - Gnome system monitor crashed 6 (or more) out of 10 times I use it. System Monitor users more CPU resources than anything else! Also when I started the PC this morning, I only had the desktop wallpaper. No icons, no taskbar, no mouse movements or menus, nothing. I had to force shut down it after a while. I'm sure we all are familiar with this on XP but I've never seen something like that on Linux!
3. Annoying noise coming every time I move mouse (mainly when scrolling) and even if I'm not doing anything. I suspect it is coming from my HDD indicator as it always blink even when nothing is running. This can't be a hardware issue as I've never had this on Vista or Win 7 (it is virtually silent on Vista and XP but not on SuSE) This noise is driving me totally mad.
4. Slow performance in general. No matter what I do, even typing this on this text window, it seems everything is running so slow. I never had this problem when I was running 10.x on my 6 year old PC. CPU is always running around 20%-30%, when I don't run any other applications but just Firefox (I have Foxclocks, Delicious and FEBE as add-ons and I don't have any problem using them on Vista or Win 7). I am using Compiz, not sure if this has got anything to do with that.
I'm getting horrible (unusable) performance every time swap is accessed. This was compounded by the GEMS leak and a few other memory leaks, but now under normal non-leaky memory usage swapping is still intolerable. For instance swapping out ~300mb when I opened a new program with RAM full resulted in the system nearly freezing up for about 3-5 minutes (however long it took to brew a cup of coffee and come back to the system just finally unfreezing).

I now find myself very rarely booting into Windows XP, and all the apps I need to use have free replacements.However, after porting about 15-20 years worth of email from Outlook (via Thunderbird) into Evolution, I'm finding Evo's performance has gone down the toilet.It was snappy to start with, but over time has got slower. I regularly get long waits as it displays notes that it is retrieving message number <whatever>.
I'm using POP3/SMTP for most email (I've a low-usage IMAP account with gmx.com too), but it seems like some sort of issue where I'd want to optimise or "defragment" my local mail store.Has anyone any ideas or suggestions on this?My ~/.evolution/mail folder contains about 2.5Gb if that's any help.This is with 9.10 Ubuntu; I have done some basic tuning on the setup, but not a lot.
When the pc is powered up it takes ages for the login screen to come up and after that it hangs then comes up with a power manager is not responding fault, when I get into the desktop it takes ages for the top bar to appear and I noticed that the wireless usb dongle takes ages to connect. USB hang at boot? I have recently installed a usb printer. Weirdly a reboot fixes the issue, it seems to be at times the very first boot up where the problem arises.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer is running really slow after a power outage. It was fine, then the power went out. Now it's *unabably* slow. The OS takes a long time to load, the simple calculator takes a few minutes to show up, Firefox doesn't even load at all before I give up. And it won't shut down normally. I have to use the power button.
So did the power outage fry somthing on my PC. Do I have ot replace RAM or the processor? Or is it a software issue? Do I have to do something as drastic as a reimage?
Ever since 11.3 Open Office was performing "badly" to say the least. It loaded slow, with a few documents open "save-as" and selecting a different folder took up to a minute and so on. Anyway I had the suspicion that there maybe not enough memory allocated. Nothing within the OO settings worked.
Then I looked into yast=>/etc/sysconfig=>System=>Limits...
found "HARDLOCKLIMIT" set to "@256"
changed to "@512"......OK finished.
Ran a test with 10 documents open
a) Startup was much faster
b) Saveas instantly
c) PDF instantly
d) Selecting new folder instantly
Preliminary conclusion : Java(sun) and OO needs more memory
I'm new to openSUSE and my computer is quite slow although my computer isn't that bad. I opened up ksysguard and it appears that my CPU is the bottleneck. My CPU usage is usually 100%, then after a few seconds, it goes down to 20-60% and then it goes back up to 100% after another few seconds. It says I have 141 processes running (I don't know if that's normal or not).

I am having very slow performance from ubuntu 9.10 - gnome - kernel 2.6.31-15-generic when copying files to usb flashdisk drive.It starts very fast(3-4MB/S) but after a while it slows down to speed of 200,300KB/S.
700mg movie file took me around 4hour to copy.

It stores all my important stuff, as well as some music and movies.I use a second linux box in my living room to "stream" content via NFS or SAMBA share.The streaming tends to stop several times during playback, and needs to fill up its buffer again before continuing to play.I also have some Windows XP and 7 based computers that connect to this file server.I have noticed that directory listing is VERY slow, and there is a huge lag when I want to save/read a file from/to my home directory.

3 RAID5 arrays with 4 hard drives eachLVM on top of the 3 raid5 arrays.The Logical Volume i use is about 6.5TB, and I use the ReiserFS file systemThis LVM has grown over the years, and has had som replaced disks. So I have used the pvmove, and extend commands a bit.I have tried using IOTop and top to check if there is not enough resources available, but that doens't seem to be the problem.I haven't been able to find out why streaming over the network stops, but I know it is the server that causes the problem.Does ReiserFS have any performance problems with large logical volumes? Would changing to EXT4 or some other FS give any performance gain?
I have 2 ASUS Boxes (one with 8GB, one with 4GB) When both mtus are set at 7200, using scp to copy a 56MB file takes 2:06. If I reduce either mtu to 1500, the speed is 2 seconds. I'm wondering if this is some kind of kernel bug or driver bug or what. For the moment, I've lowered the mtu to 1500 to get the performance out of the machines, but find it interesting that what should make it faster is actually slowing down. Where should I post this to get it looked at? Is anyone else seeing it.I see a similar performance issue with smbclient too.

As I wanted to add a big SATA drive I bought a PCMCIA SATA controller based on Via VT6421 chipset. This is where I have a problem. My drive is very slow (around 8mb/s) with this configuration. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently migrated my file server over to a HP Microserver. The server has two 1TB disks, in a software RAID-1 array, using MDADM. When I migrated simply moved the mirrored disks over, from the old server Ubuntu 9.10 (server) to the new one 10.04.1 (server).I Have recently noticed that write speed to the RAID array is *VERY* slow. In the order of 1-2MB/s order of magnitude (more info below). Now obviously this is not optimal performance to say the least. I have checked a few things, CPU utilisation is not abnormal (<5%) nor is memory / swap. When I took a disk out and rebuilt the array, with only one disk (tried both) performance was as to be expected (write speed >~70MB/s) The read speed seems to be unaffected however!
I'm tempted to think that there is something funny going on with the storage subsystem, as copying from the single disk to the array is slower than creating a file from /dev/zero to the array using DD..Either way I can't try the array in another computer right now, so I though I was ask to see if people have seen anything like this!At the moment I'm not sure if it is something strange to do with having simply chucked the mirrored array into the new server, perhaps a different version of MDADM? I'm wondering if it's worth backing up and starting from scratch! Anyhow this has really got me scratching my head, and its a bit of a pain! Any help here would be awesome, e-cookies at the ready!
