I just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 on one HD. Now I have no internet with 9.10. The dsl connection I used to upgrade is still there, the password is correct, but it can't connect to the net, and always falls back to AutoEth0.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm experiencing low importance nuisance with conky. I'm running ubuntu 10.10 and use conky to have basic system overview. Whenever I mount/umount USB flash, conky disapears from display. It does not crash, it only falls into neverending sleep (process state: Sl+). When I send rehub signal (kill 1 {conky_pid}) conky happily wake up, reloads configuration and shows me what I want to see. I dont have anything USB realted in my monitor.

I install Fedora10 in my computer but when it begins the process of installation, it says that "x startup failed" and falls to text mode of installation. Howerver, the graphic mode works in another computer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI updated this afternoon and once my updates were done i went to connect a usb to my vmware xp box. I got a usb error that windows could not use the usb. So i rebooted vmware and got the same thing... I then shut down vmware and rebooted my machine.. once i logged into the machine and launched vmware i no longer can see any of my usb devices.
I would like to just rollback the updates so that i can use my vmware again.. as i must transfer cad files to the pc with usb. Autodesk only works in windows so vmware has been a blessing as i dont have to reboot every time i need to work on drawings!

I believe that the attacker somehow got in through the ssh daemon(OpenSSH 5.3p1) on June 12. From here, a user account named "crond" was created(can anyone confirm weather this is normal?) and according to the log, this account was accessed several times between Jun 12 and Jun 18 from the same ip address. Also on Jun 12, the MOTD on the ssh server was messed up and remained that way until it was reinstalled. The default ssh client(OpenSSH 5.3p1) was made completely non-functional.
I became alerted to the problem when my ISP advised me to run a virus scan on the machines on my network. Not knowing of any linux based anti-virus software, I decided to check for suspicious files on my hard drive. I found one, in the /tmp directory was a subdirectory called ".popscan". Inside was a script and a list of about 40 very default sounding usernames and passwords. There was also a file called "back.txt" in the root of my filesystem. Which is a pearl script that aparently spawns a shell.
At this point I disconnected the server from the internet and mirrored the drive. I found a suspicious home directory for "crond" I'm hesitating on setting up the server again for fear that it might just get rooted again. I would also like to find out how he got in so it can be prevented for other people aswell.
I'm facing an odd problem with a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.4 on a Dell PE-2950, using NIC Broadcom BCM5708C (rev 12) NetXtream II. Driver's are up to date. I'd installed vsftpd and configure it. I can connect from anywhere in the network where I setup this Server. The odd problem is that when I'm sending a big file (5.5 GiB for example), from another PE-2950 server (Windows Server 2003 64 bits R2) with another BCM5708C nic, the speed of the transfer starts at 90 MiB/s approx. but after 30 seconds , it drops to 15 MiB/s and never raise again. Driver's are up to date too.
However, from another Server in the network, a Dell R710 with SLES 10 SP3, the transfer speed is at 90-100-110 MiB/s all the time. The switch is a HP Procurve 2910al-24G, with all ports at gigabit speed. I'd tried with different FTP clients in Windows: WinSCP and the Windows's ftp client, but the result is the same: speed falls down after 30 seconds approx. using the Windows-Box.
I instaled vmware and created a virtual machine which is bt4. first of all i cant creat an user password and i log on with root second when i run the command airmon-ng i cant get my device name or anything caz nothing comes up under interface or i forgot what its caled.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.
As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?
To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.

I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.
Can someone explain to me how I get it back?
i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. "Apply system wide" in the Language Support didn't do anything; Firefox is in japanese too. Here is my locale output:

I tried to install vsftpd on my server and while the installation went fine, I can't run

sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart with a warning telling me to use the service utility. Not only that, but despite the port being open it won't allow me to log in, it just hangs, and I have local users enabled (I've used the default .conf file). Does dbus not come installed in 10.04, and if I did install it would it make a difference for restarting the service? Are there further steps needed not available in the tutorial on the Ubuntu Server Guide for 10.04 to enabling local user authentication? -edit- Figured it out, dbus wasn't installed, vsftpd is working fine now.
My wireless (Toshiba laptop, 10.04 64 bit) is just hanging when trying to connect. It was working fine but now nothing. My Wireless antennae is on and my other laptop can connect with no problems. I have restarted the router and the laptop twice.

I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I am using Squeeze and all appears OK at first... I have a DHCP lease, PING to router works, apache servering fine in and outside the network, Epiphany seems to connects to default debian.org only, BUT I cannot connect to any other websites and apt will not connect to any servers. I installed once, tried to fix problem, gave up and reinstalled and still have the same problem.
I unistalled Network Manager thinking that was the problem, but still the same issue. Is there a default firewall blocking certain connections or am I missing something I'm supposed to know about? I installed some non-free firmware in the beginning of install and all worked... and I connected fine when downloading packages during install.
I'm trying to setup PS3 media server on my new OpenSuse 11.2 and I'm being unable to connect to the PS3. The multimedia server seems to being working ok, only it has not appear on XMB.
I've been searching on PS3 Media Server forums and try a couple of solutions regarding /etc/hosts and adding full qualified domain name of server to it, but it doesn't seems to work.
