View 6 RepliesI just got myself a Dell Inspiron 1440. And decided to install my favorite distro Debian. I got the installation to go with no issue and all seems to be working fine. However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.

Also, I've been doing some research and found out about some file located /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. So I looked in mine and found out that only my eth0 is added.

It isn't even detecting the wireless card, and the network manager will only let me connect to wired networks (I'm connected to my router via ethernet cable right now).
I've pressed the LED killswitch but it does nothing (doesn't change from orange to blue nor does it have any noticeable effect on the network manager or the reports of the above 2 commands).
opensuse 11.3 cannot detect my wirless card.

I recently purchased an MSI A5000 notebook, but regrettably it happens to use an obscure branded wireless card that's given me quite a bit of frustration to get working. I do have a bit of history behind this card that might help to solve this problem. First of all the card is a Ralink rt3090STA, and the manufacturer does provide a linux driver for this card (available here)
I was using Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit until last week, when I decided that I would like to try using a 64 bit system. I would prefer to use fedora instead of Ubuntu for the time being. Ubuntu had some major problems recognizing the card for some time before I was able to get it to work. The process I used to resolve the issue on my Ubuntu system has not proven successful on Fedora 13 x64, and I would like any help I can get to try to resolve this problem.

Moreover, when I look into hardinfo->network->interfaces I only find the wired connection. Could anyone please tell me if these programs find all devices or if there could still be a wireless card here?

To find the appropriate firmware without knowing the make or brand of your wireless chip, you can use the command:
#fw-detect
But apparently debian package do not offer this useful tool, well, certainly for sidux exclusively.
Is there a package of fw-detect eventually?
at start, knetworkmanager detect wireless network, but doesn't automatically connect - I have to restart it to make it work properly. Instead, it gives that error:

Ever since I switched from windows I miss the fact that gaming is not all that well on linux. I think that is pretty unfortunate. The games I'd like to play are team fortress 2 and a bit of civilization 4. Luckily for me, these games are known to run good through wine. But the bad thing for me is that I had an old ATI card and I was stuck with the bad driver that caused all these games to crash. So I had it with this. Each time I wanted to play I needed to restart to windows. So I saved some money and yesterday I bought a geforce 640 GTX.
When I boot up the computer for the first time with my card it all seems to work well. It just did not detect my new card automatically. And now I have to confess I'm not all that experienced with ubuntu and getting some things done. But I thought, ah well.. 10.10 is coming up, lets update to the release candidate and see how things are going from there. A new card and new version of ubuntu, woohoo! Now after the update it did detect the driver and it seems to run pretty well, but I do have a few problems.
I have a small second screen to extend my primary desktop. In the NVIDIA X Server Settings and under the tab 'X Server Display Configuration' I have the second screen in 'TwinView' and it seems to work well. Untill I restart my screen that is. After a restart I have to keep activating my second screen. I was kind of hoping it'd save the settings.
The other problem is what I get when playing team fortress 2. I'm not sure this is the right place to ask here, or I should better head to the wine forums or something, but I do hope to fix this. When I have the second screen enabled, and I'd like to start team fortress 2 it gives a warning: 'Failed to create D3D devide'. Doing some googling, it seems to be a resolution problem. After I disable the second screen, it works again.
Then with the second screen disabled it seems to finally run. But unfortunately after 5/10 min the I get kicked out of the server with the message 'Disconnected: Client timed out'. I did some googling arond and there's not much results relating to wine/ubuntu, but most windows users seem to have this problem because of a firewall. Now, I'm using ubuntu and not using a firewall as far as I know (there's probably some build in, I just take that as it is ). But maybe anyone here knows how to fix this and I do get to finally play team fortress 2 on ubuntu?
I installed Ubuntu 10.4 some time ago but it does not detect any audio card. I checked via terminal with the aplay -l command. how to install the audio card?

I installed a sound card but when I go to System->Preferences->Sound and go to Hardware it's not showing anything at all. If I boot from the Live CD then it will show the card and it works. How can I make my Linux installation detect this card? I was thinking that I could somehow copy the necessary files from the Live CD to make this work, but maybe there's an easier way.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI own a ubuntu-server (2.6.35-22-server x64) - a home router / NAS / etc assembled at the mini-itx motherboard with no attached keyboard / display. The problem is that the system does not detect the occurrence of SD-card in a USB-card reader. Card reader is normally detected and visible in the system. When I insert SD-card in cardreader, in "dmesg" and, accordingly, "udevadm monitor" does not display any events. If reboot with connected SD, everything works fine, but, of course, there is no event when removing SD.On the forum topics if problems arise, it is only with automounting. But it's not. I do not have events from kernel, that he discovered the SD-card.In the desktop version there is no problem.I installed the generic kernel; comparing kernels configurations for desktop/server versions, comparing the output "udevadm monitor" at the time when I inserted the SD-card on desktop/server, etc. - useless.I don't have more ideas. I don't understand something. Probably there is no package.Almost ready to give up, put the desktop version and delete unnecessary. On desktop versions missing events displayed as follows (the output "udevadm monitor" when inserting SD-card):

View 2 Replies View Relatedso, when i first got my laptop it came with vista and the ethernet worked fine, then when I decided to install Karmic about 9 months ago it still worked fine. After a while the update for lucid came out so I upgraded to that and then the ethernet started getting buggy. It would only work about half the time that i wanted it too and the other half of the time it would just stare at me and not move anywhere. So along with a couple other bugs I decided to format my harddrive and downgrade back to karmic and await the 10.10 release. unfortunatly my ethernet woes carried with me and they still would only show up on occasion. then about half way through my time with karmic round 2 it stopped altogether, and with the upgrade back to lucid it hasn't seemed to solve itself.
I ran through ifconfig -a, lspci and sudo ifup -a but they all tell me that the device doesn't exist.
I am facing problem with onboard lan card. i think its not detecting. when i type ifconfig command it shows below details

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have two graphics cards in my computer. One is a crappy built-in nVidia GeForce 6150 SE, and the other is a high-end (as of 2008) GeForce in the 8000 range. I would like to use the latter, but I can't get anything to detect it. Testing which is in operation is easy: they have separate video outputs. I've tried changing the BIOS settings, but to no avail. I'm stumped. Could it be that my other card is dead? How could I test it? I'm fairly certain that it worked back when I used Windows, as I remember having to use my DVI-to-VGA converter (the other card's outputs are all DVI).
