Oct 18, 2010

I've got a TV card installed on my machine, an Intel Celeron wht a 2.4GHz processor, 1,5GB RAM, 80GBx2 Seagate hard drives and two DVD writers, an LG and a BENQ.

I'm currently watching TV using the TV card on Windows. It's working well. I DO NOT LIKE WINDOWS!! I've been on Ubuntu Linux for the past 3 and a half years! Beautiful! My TV card name is:

OCEAN TV MAGICIAN PT218 TV Card.

My Ubuntu 9.04 cannot see it. I kindly ask for advice on how I can configure it to work on Ubuntu 9.04.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: TV Card Fails To Work After Upgrade From Jaunty

Oct 30, 2010

I upgraded fro Jaunty to Karmic and then to Lucid and my TV card has stopped working. I had been informed that this was a result of the splitting of the linux-firmware into two separate packages, but having installed the linux-firmware-nonfree package the problem persists. The card is a Hauppauge WinTV PCI and although it is properly recognised by commands like lsmod, lspci and in the sound card settings, I can't tune in a single channel. It worked out of the box in Jaunty. Is there anything else that needs to be done to get the nonfree firmware working properly?

Hardware :: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty And NVidia Video Card Resolutions

May 31, 2009

I've got Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty + lxde. My video card is Nvidia FX 5200 (Nvidia driver ver. 173.14.18). My monitor is a lcd Acer mod. x193w (widescreen). At present I cannot choose the 1280x800 resolution as I was used to when I was using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. Nvidia X Server settings offers several resolutions (included the native monitor resolution, 1440x900) but not 1280x800 as before. I wonder why. I even added mode 1280x800 in the Section "Screen" of xorg.conf but it was ignored.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jaunty ATI Xserver No Backfill After Jaunty-proposed Update

Been using since summer 2009 the xserver no backfill from PPA: [URL] and it was working fine with my ATI video card. No heavy CPU usage when restoring from minimized and a general performance boost were the results of that use.But recently made an upgrade and realized that xserver-xorg-core package (check it from synaptic manager) has been upgraded to a jaunty-proposed version and the problems started to appear again! So using Synaptic I selected this package and hit CTRL-E key in order to choose the nobackfill version. This way things got back to normal!

Ubuntu :: Did Not Detect My New Nvidia Card Automatically

Oct 2, 2010

Ever since I switched from windows I miss the fact that gaming is not all that well on linux. I think that is pretty unfortunate. The games I'd like to play are team fortress 2 and a bit of civilization 4. Luckily for me, these games are known to run good through wine. But the bad thing for me is that I had an old ATI card and I was stuck with the bad driver that caused all these games to crash. So I had it with this. Each time I wanted to play I needed to restart to windows. So I saved some money and yesterday I bought a geforce 640 GTX.

When I boot up the computer for the first time with my card it all seems to work well. It just did not detect my new card automatically. And now I have to confess I'm not all that experienced with ubuntu and getting some things done. But I thought, ah well.. 10.10 is coming up, lets update to the release candidate and see how things are going from there. A new card and new version of ubuntu, woohoo! Now after the update it did detect the driver and it seems to run pretty well, but I do have a few problems.

I have a small second screen to extend my primary desktop. In the NVIDIA X Server Settings and under the tab 'X Server Display Configuration' I have the second screen in 'TwinView' and it seems to work well. Untill I restart my screen that is. After a restart I have to keep activating my second screen. I was kind of hoping it'd save the settings.

The other problem is what I get when playing team fortress 2. I'm not sure this is the right place to ask here, or I should better head to the wine forums or something, but I do hope to fix this. When I have the second screen enabled, and I'd like to start team fortress 2 it gives a warning: 'Failed to create D3D devide'. Doing some googling, it seems to be a resolution problem. After I disable the second screen, it works again.

Then with the second screen disabled it seems to finally run. But unfortunately after 5/10 min the I get kicked out of the server with the message 'Disconnected: Client timed out'. I did some googling arond and there's not much results relating to wine/ubuntu, but most windows users seem to have this problem because of a firewall. Now, I'm using ubuntu and not using a firewall as far as I know (there's probably some build in, I just take that as it is ). But maybe anyone here knows how to fix this and I do get to finally play team fortress 2 on ubuntu?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Detect Wireless Card On HP Laptop

Jul 19, 2010

I'm on an HP Pavillion dv4-1125nr with a Broadcom BCM 4312 network card.

I only have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on this computer.

ifconfig reports:

Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1e:ec:b5:b4:85
inet addr:192.168.0.5 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::21e:ecff:feb5:b485/64 Scope:Link

[Code]....

It isn't even detecting the wireless card, and the network manager will only let me connect to wired networks (I'm connected to my router via ethernet cable right now).

I've pressed the LED killswitch but it does nothing (doesn't change from orange to blue nor does it have any noticeable effect on the network manager or the reports of the above 2 commands).

Ubuntu Servers :: Cardreader Don't Detect SD Card (server X64)?

Nov 9, 2010

I own a ubuntu-server (2.6.35-22-server x64) - a home router / NAS / etc assembled at the mini-itx motherboard with no attached keyboard / display. The problem is that the system does not detect the occurrence of SD-card in a USB-card reader. Card reader is normally detected and visible in the system. When I insert SD-card in cardreader, in "dmesg" and, accordingly, "udevadm monitor" does not display any events. If reboot with connected SD, everything works fine, but, of course, there is no event when removing SD.On the forum topics if problems arise, it is only with automounting. But it's not. I do not have events from kernel, that he discovered the SD-card.In the desktop version there is no problem.I installed the generic kernel; comparing kernels configurations for desktop/server versions, comparing the output "udevadm monitor" at the time when I inserted the SD-card on desktop/server, etc. - useless.I don't have more ideas. I don't understand something. Probably there is no package.Almost ready to give up, put the desktop version and delete unnecessary. On desktop versions missing events displayed as follows (the output "udevadm monitor" when inserting SD-card):

Code:
KERNEL[985153522.094479] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:3/block/sdf (block)

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Won't Detect Laptop Ethernet Card?

Nov 15, 2010

so, when i first got my laptop it came with vista and the ethernet worked fine, then when I decided to install Karmic about 9 months ago it still worked fine. After a while the update for lucid came out so I upgraded to that and then the ethernet started getting buggy. It would only work about half the time that i wanted it too and the other half of the time it would just stare at me and not move anywhere. So along with a couple other bugs I decided to format my harddrive and downgrade back to karmic and await the 10.10 release. unfortunatly my ethernet woes carried with me and they still would only show up on occasion. then about half way through my time with karmic round 2 it stopped altogether, and with the upgrade back to lucid it hasn't seemed to solve itself.

I ran through ifconfig -a, lspci and sudo ifup -a but they all tell me that the device doesn't exist.
