How, using the command line can I detect my wireless card and make it work under SUSE Enterprise Desktop? The wireless card works in Win XP.

I looked in the software archive that came with sled 11 but it wasnt there. I tried downloading the VirtualBox install for Suse Linux Enterprise Server but got the same error as when i tried install VirtualBox with the opensuse 11.1 rpm file. can virtualbox even be install on sled? I have a netbook and the wireless card on it works fine. Whenever I wake it up after suspending for couple of hours, it seems like the wireless card is not awaking or the drivers are not working properly because I do not see any wireless networks after waking it up(for example in Wicd). If I do fresh restart, the wireless and wireless networks come back at the same place. So I am wondering if it is possible to restart the wireless card or the driver without restarting my netbook

If I boot from the Live CD then it will show the card and it works. How can I make my Linux installation detect this card? I was thinking that I could somehow copy the necessary files from the Live CD to make this work, but maybe there's an easier way.

But apparently debian package do not offer this useful tool, well, certainly for sidux exclusively.
Is there a package of fw-detect eventually?

I have been trying to find a wireless card that will readily work with Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop. Preferably an +802.11 N with an indoor range of between 300 to 400 ft. with possibly two antennas. View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got myself a Dell Inspiron 1440. And decided to install my favorite distro Debian. I got the installation to go with no issue and all seems to be working fine. However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.

I'm playing around with trying to access a Fedora 13 system from a Ubuntu 10.04 system. Both are relatively new vanilla installations.I went into System - Preferences - Remote Desktop on the Fedora system and enabled Remote Desktop. When I connect with the Ubuntu system (ssh), I can login, but all I see is an ssh terminal session. I was expecting the desktop environment (GNOME right?) to come up.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI use a program which makes a large image which I have to scroll to view. The program has no way to save the image, and I have no access to the source to modify it. The only way I have to get the image from the program is by screenshot. My goal is to save the full size image without having to piece together individual screenshots. I'm using this script to try taking a screenshot:

This uses wmctrl to get the window id ($window) for a window named "Program". It then tries to resize the window to the desired dimensions. It uses imagemagick (import) to save a screenshot.png on the user's Desktop. All of this works except the resize step. I can resize the window using wmctrl -r -e, but sizes greater than the screen size don't work. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and the Gnome Desktop. I run two monitors, but I've tried this with one of them disabled. Is there a way to resize the window larger than my screen to get a huge screenshot?
Part II: I tried using xrandr to set up screen panning, so as to have a bigger desktop than my monitor. xrandr --output LVDS --panning 2600x2500 This command makes the laptop screen pan over a 2600x2500 size desktop, even though it can only show 1440x900 at one time. To turn off the panning, I can use a similar command to set total size and with zeroes for the panning section. This gives me back my original laptop display behavior. xrandr --fb 1440x900 --output LVDS --panning 0x0 This is all done with xrandr, and does not require any Xorg.conf changes (my Ubuntu system doesn't even have an Xorg.conf).
My video card seems to only allow about 6.5 million pixels, even though the maximum dimensions are 8192x8192. That maximum seems to be the maximum for either dimension, but there is a limit to how many pixels can be drawn, which is the width multiplied by the height. Once I did the screen resize, I tried my script again and got a screenshot. The screenshot however is totally scrambled. I'm not sure if it's unable to take a screenshot of an off-screen window or if it is unable to handle the large dimensions of the window. With the panning display, the window should think it is visible, and the window manager should think it is on-screen. So there is a pixel buffer somewhere with those pixels in it, so there should be a way to get a screenshot.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI run Ubuntu, and it has a nice GUI widget thing that connects me to my home wireless network when I boot. I don't have a problem with that. But suppose I don't start X, and boot to a recovery console for some reason, like I did recently when my graphics were broken after installing Karmic. In that case, my computer won't be connected to the wireless network until I log into X normally. So I can't apt-get anything or anything. It's very annoying. And I don't know how to connect to my wireless network.
I know my wireless network SSID, and I know my WEP key or WPA passphrase. How can I log onto the network with commandline tools? Is there some basic program that I can just run "networkmanager <myssid> <mywepkey>"? I looked at the iwconfig man page and I honestly couldn't figure out how to simply connect to my network. Once I figure out how to connect to the network with command-line tools, where can I put an "autoconnect" script so that it will connect during startup, like it should anyway?
What I don't understand is, why the Ubuntu network manager nm-applet, doesn't just work as a front-end for more basic networking stuff. I don't see any reason why it should require you to start X before working; it could be a daemon that runs at startup, and there could be a config-file somewhere, but it doesn't even start running until I log onto gnome.
I recently downloaded ubuntu 9.10. I have a dell d410 with a built in wireless card. It won't detect it, and I have no access to a wired connection for now.

Here are some details...
I have two computers running the same version of Debian. One is a server with no GUI and the other is my laptop with GDM installed. My laptop (which prints with no problem) is connected via Wifi. My server is connected directly to the router via Ethernet. I cannot print from the server.
The printer is a Canon Pixma MP495 that connects to the router via Wifi. I have downloaded drivers for the printer from [url] and installed them successfully using dpkg on both computers.
Right now I have a regular text file that I am using for a test page. To print from my laptop (with success) I type:
