View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to get ubuntu working on my system.I have tried on previous systems without success, hopefully it works out this time.Currently my only major issue with it is I cannot get any sounds to play.I use a Logitech G35 usb headset and onboard audio (GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H motherboard, Realtek ALC892 audio chipset).Ideally, I'd like to be able to listen from either source, though just getting one working would be great.Ubuntu is currently not detecting any sound.
Using aplay -l, it said no sound card found. Using lspci -v, so sound devices were listed.I am a complete noob to ubuntu, I had to research to figure out what to do with 'aplay -l' (Application -> Accessories -> Terminal, type command in terminal). My Windows troubleshooting skills seem largely useless in a Linux environment.
I have a DFI RS482 mobo with integrated sound. I am making a car puter and only have a 2GB CF card, so I installed a server install of Ubuntu. Then I got xserver-xorg, mplayer, and fluxbox. I downloaded and installed the latest nvidia driver. Mplayer spit out tons of sound errors and that's when I realized the server install has no sound. So I installed the 'alsa', 'pulseaudio' and 'pavucontrol' packages. Now mplayer does not complain and acts like it is playing sound, but nothing happens sound-wise. Pavucontrol shows mplayer as playing sound and the volume as unmuted. However the PCM output is going to "dummy output" and the configuration tab says there are no cards to be configured.
So I think my sound card is not being detected. I don't know what to do at this point.

alsamixer fails on "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory"
lsmod | grep 97 returns a bunch of stuff, but I'm not sure what it is.
I'm using mythbuntu 10.10 with 2 pci tuner cards and 1 SB PCI sound card. My system is detecting my tuner cards as audio devices and making one of those my default sound cardWhich file do I change to make the SB card the default sound card?
View 2 Replies View Relatedinstalled Fedora 11 on my laptop a couple of days ago. Everything went well in the installation except for the fact that I have no sound. I have a HP Pavilion dv5 and I have installed Gnome as my desktop. I tried fiddling around with the sound sliders in System/Preferences/Sound/ and System/Preferences/Advanced Volume Control but with no success in getting the sound to work. What is the problem with my sound? Any help would be appreciated. Interestingly, I had no problems with sound in Fedora 10, except for the fact that my internal mic was not working out of the box but even with that, I was able to find a workaround to get it working. By the way, I have the Intel 820801i (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller as my sound card.

I've been desperate to get rid of my Windows install for a while now and have finally started to make the move over, but have a problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 install. I've scoured the help documentation and forum for days now without managing to resolve my problem, and have finally resorted to posting my problem. So I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
1 Installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Viglen Furtura S200) but the only way I have been able to get it to install and boot properly is edit the GRUB with the following acpi=off i915.modeset xforcevesa. I had to add these parameters even to boot the live CD as well. I think I'm right in assuming that this is forcing the use of a generic graphics driver, consequently leaving some visual features unavailable. I'm not really sure what turning acpi off is doing. Is it possible to resolve this? Is this the cause of problem number 2?
2 After install there is no sound. Sound preferences shows no hardware and ALSAmixer is empty when opened. I have followed the sound troubleshooting through and it looks like my sound card is actually being picked up on the board, but I fall at the point of checking the loaded ALSA Modules as my report shows that none are loaded?!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have F13 installed on a Gigabyte MB with on board audio and rear panel plugs. I'm not hearing anyting from the speaker tests from System|Preferences|Sound GUI or from the SATA DVD with a CD inserted. (Or Rythmbox, or Amarok) I've tried headphones and amplified speakers with no output detectable. The 'aplay' and 'aconnect' utilities don't report any errors when probing the audio setup. Any suggestions on how I can isolate where the problem might be occuring? Can I use the a version of FedoraPlus or possiby easyLife on Fedora13 to update the codecs or drivers?The rest of the system is running great with most of the mysql and tomcat stuff porting over from Solaris with very few changes. Fixed color printing last night, but I seem stuck on audio for now.

I've spent the past 2 days attempting to get the sound working on a Toshiba A75 notebook. Here is what i've tried so far:
remove/purge alsa and pulse audio then reinstall
set up/configure OSS
download and compile latest alsa drivers. code...
My questions are: is there anyone using this laptop on Lucid with sound? Can anyone provide a new idea how to make this work if it is compatible hardware.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to the latest Wine, I find one of my most prized Win apps no longer works properly (no longer detects sound hardware). Seeing as the previous version (1.2.0-2) of Wine worked fine, I have located its (16) rpm's in the Yum cache, but irrespective of which one I double-click to install, it fails, complaining one of the other packages isn't already installed. Shouldn't the installation-manager automatically detect that these all of these dependent-on-each-other files are present? The 'newest' previous version in the repository is 1.1.38 - really old in other words - and my app works with it but I'd really like to install the newer version in the Yum cache.

How to configure the sound card and get it working?
If I boot CentOS (5, up to date) without my USB headphones are plugged in, all sound output goes to the sound card. But if I have the headphones plugged in when I boot, all output goes to them, and the sound card does not seem to be recognised at all.
Is there any way I can force the sound card to be recognised, and chosen as the default device, when booting with the headphones plugged in? If I have booted with the headphones plugged in, and then I unplug them, go into System|Preferences|Sound, and press the Test button with sound playback set to autodetect, I get a dialog with the message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.
Then I started System|Administration|Soundcard detection, and it detected both Intel and Radeon sound cards, but its test button did not produce any sound for either. I moved the Intel device to the top of the list in the Settings tab, and then ran "Reload audio drivers" in the System tab. I got an error message saying I needed to reboot, but I didn't. At this point, the test buttons in the Sound test tab, and in System|Preferences|Sound started working OK. Do I have to go through this rigmarole every time I boot with the headphones plugged in?

For those not familiar with the "motion" project it monitors your camera and when enough motion is detected in the video field of view it records that to a video file. View 1 Replies View RelatedI was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I bought a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 sound card because I had read online that this card was a good choice with Linux and came with universal driver software. I installed the hardware correctly (as it works with WinXP) but I'm not able to get it working with Ubuntu.

Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

I've got a custom compiled kernel, just built on Lucid 10.04 from the kernel sources.System works fine, except for sound.When I log in as normal user and try to play a wav file using.The sound file is being played, but I hear no sound.However, when I do "sudo -s" and become root, execute the same mplayer command then I can hear the sound.My Sound preferences shows no input device and only "Dummy Output" as output device.On the generic kernel as came with the Lucid 10.04 CD, sound preferences shows different devices.The strange thing is: when I compiled my custom kernel, I changed nothing to the sound options in the kernel config file.
