I've been using it for the last 2 weeks or so without any troubles. Today I did an update and upon rebooting I have had a major issue. The wallpaper loads, but no taskbars. At the same time i'm prompted to agree or to not agree with the Skype End User License Agreement. Those are the only things on the screen! The wallpaper and Skype agreement. Also the mouse pointer is now an X.
View 4 RepliesThe problem is I've set up a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu was working fine till 2 days back but now when I select Ubuntu from the grub screen i get a whole lot of numbers next which it'll say Usb drive or sd card reader etc.. these go by quickly and then the comp stops running. If i press enter on the keyboard I get Initramfs and then i can type but nothing happens even if I type reboot. if I press cntrl+alt+F2 then i get a blank screen with flashing cursor. Same with recovery mode. Windows boots fine. The grub2 screen comes fine. The last thing i did before this happened is reconfigure the grub2 screen, but it seems to be fine (i had added a background img and reordered the boot options) I did not edit grub.cfg. I would prefer not to reinstall it as iv done it a half a dozen times already in the last few weeks..

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot my pc it used to take me to a prompt which asked which OS I would like to boot. Today randomly, some grub rescue menu came up. I read online that that meant I had to fix my grub menu, which I did. Now a regular grub menu pops and and I have no idea what to do with it. Whats a grub menu? How can I just get back to my regular boot screen? I run dual boot xp and ubuntu, is grub a program of xp or ubuntu? I have no idea what this grub menu is and whats going on with my pc!
View 2 Replies View Relatedjust installed ubuntu on my win 7 laptop using the wubi.. after the install it said restart,so i restatred and booted up ubuntu which went sound,it then says finishing installation.. ubuntu comes up does the partions then started copying files then once it had done this the screen went black with loads of writing on it..it seems to just stay like this.. i left it 30 mins the restarted laptop again..laptop working sound booted ubuntu again and the same thing happened..

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt's only been a couple of days since I formatted my toshiba laptop's hard drive (i was running fedora without significant problems) and installed slackware 13.1 32bit. I did a network install because the dvd drive is not functioning properly. everything installed fine with the hugesmp kernel, but I started not being able to boot the laptop every single time I wanted to (especially after a reboot but also after a power up).
my observations:
-the pc might freeze in the very first toshiba logo screen (where you are prompted to press F2 to enter BIOS)
-or it might freeze when I get the lilo boot loader (not even the count down to choose kernel starts) - but i CAN use the arrows and press 'enter' to choose to load a kernel manually
-or just after it loads the kernel and the bios checks
-or during boot after in loads ACPI thermal zone
-or a little later during boot when the dhcpcd if broadcasting for a dhcp lease.
the first 3 are freezes, the last 2 are resets. especially if i need to reboot (or get the resets of the 2 last case), I will surely get stack in one of the first 3 cases afterwards! i have observed that rarely, after such a reset, if it actually gets stack in the toshiba logo, i might be able - pressing the poiwer buttonj repeatedly to actually overcome the 'freezing' there at which time i'll get to the lilo loader (the count down timer will not.. count down), but i can press 'enter' and I will finally get stack after loading the kernel and bios checks
So I have to powerdown the laptop and start all over again. Sometimes the whole boot process will proceed smoothly. and i'll get to a login prompt, and when I do I can keep the laptop up and running for virtually ever. that is it doesn't seem to be slackware related... Hwever the problems started after I installed slackware. I didn't have any problem with the fedora installation and i wonder if it has something to do with the network boot.... additional note, with feodra i didn't have a problem restarting or shutting down the laptop. now if i restart, the pc will go through the process of shutting down, but it will never actually reboot - i'll have to do it manually..

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.
I had a dual boot working fine with XP and F12 on two physical drives, all was well. Last night my friend helped upgrade my system, I now have 3 drives (20gig F12) (60gig XP) and (320gig Win7) now the PC only loads Win7 as I think my friend told bios to boot from 320gig. Has anybody here got experience with triple boot from 3 drives? Here is my guess, tell bios to boot from other drive and add Win7 to grub. Not sure how but that's my guess. Also what worries me is that win7 does not "see" the other two drives.

I've been looking around online, trying to find out how to configure multiple desktops to have their own taskbar.Most of my results suggest that I should be able to click on the menu, choose favorites, and go to Configure Desktop. In the new window, I should see a taskbar section on the left hand side?I am running OpenSUSE 11.2 on two machines and neither of them have this option. I just wanted to see if somebody knows where I can find the window to configure separate taskbars for each desktop?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

screen. This only happens when my external hard drive isn't plugged in. How do i fix this? It hasn't always happened like this. I have a windows 7 install disk, but it never gives me the option to repair windows or go to command prompt.
when i login to Ubuntu all the icons & toolbars & taskbars are appearing in larger size.
my monitor size is 17" Samsung .
i dont understand how to solve the problem.
when i see on other systems its correctly detecting the monitor size and company.
but on my system its showing unknown for monitor company & the resolution 900 X 600 (16:10).
on my friend system the resolution is 1024 X 768(4:3). but on my system the max resolution is only 900 X 600 (16:10).
problem, I have just installed Fedora 13 on to a new build but for some reason I am missing the top and bottom taskbars. I can see the GNOME desktop with two icons, I have managed to get yum running, which is currently downloading updates. I have used the same live CD on other systems with incident.Just wondering if there is some thing I could try to reset or start a service setting etc to get the taskbars to show?

However at start up Grub loads only 2.6.31-19 and below and there's no mentioning of 2.6.32 in grub.cfg while it is present in menu.lst. I tried to update grub with no success.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhat I have noticed on several versions of Ubuntu, both 32 and 64 bit (including 9.10, 10.04 b2 and UNR 9.10) is that after the launch of Firefox (including the current 3.6.3 version), I continue to get a spinning cursor for more than 10 seconds after the FF window is present and ready to accept input. Sometimes I get it only when moving the cursor outside the FF window and other times it will be in the window, too. I have even noticed it persist for a short time after quitting FF. I think it's definitely related to FF because I don't see this occur unless FF is launched, not even when another browser (Chromium in this case) is launched. To add to the mystery, I see it in Ubuntu and Mint 8 xfce, but not in Ubuntu-based distros with simpler window managers like Mint 8 fluxbox or CrunchBang 9.04 (openbox). To try to get rid of this, I have tried various FF configuration speedups available from the Net - changes implemented through about:config. These do speed up FF, but they don't get rid of the spinning wheel.As far as I can tell, the spinning wheel has no impact on FF operation - it doesn't stop me from entering a url and accessing it, though perhaps it slows down implementation.

The mouse cursor shows up, I can move it around, and then it goes black again, and the mouse cursor shows up again. This repeats a few times until the cursor freezes. I have tried some of the options in recovery mode from GRUB menu, none really work, except booting with default graphic configuration, or something similar like this.
So I have used ubuntu for about 2 years now, and this has never been an issue. Basically my trackpad(touchpad) on my laptop stops working when the wallpaper and other gui aspects load. The mouse works in windows and works in ubuntu for a few seconds while the screen is still black and gui is loading. So I know ubuntu does know it exists.
This problem occured after watching a movie and ubuntu froze up. Also while watching the movie I had the trackpad disabled, which might have something to do with my problem. (I have a hpdv6500 which has a button on the trackpad to disable it. I did no software tricks or hacks to do it). After resetting my computer the problem existed and persists every time I turn it on and off. So does anyone have any experience with such a problem or maybe how to reset the settings of the mouse?
The screen will show a blinking cursor for a few seconds. The keyboard works and a signal is found for the speakers. Then the 'Ubuntu' loading screen will show but at this point the screen would freeze and the keyboard will cease to function. At this point I have to reboot from the on/off switch. It can take several attempts before the desktop will load, or if I'm lucky, it'll load up first time. I've had this problem since 9.10. I'm not quite sure why it's taken me this long to attempt to sort it out.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I power on my Xubuntu machine, GRUB does not load until I reboot. Once the system is running, I can reboot back into Xubuntu but if I power down GRUB does not seem to load. I've got the system to power on at 8am every morning but the fact that I have to reboot it is really annoying me.

Reinstalled GRUB to the master boot record of my first hard disk and it solved everything. I had to follow the second part of this guide to get it to work:

I upgraded 10.04 to 10.10. At the tail end of the install, the display locked. After an hour or 2 I rebooted the box.
Came up to a command prompt (instead of starting the GUI automatically), started the GUI, everything seemed fine.
Ran 10.10 fine for 2 days. Installed apps, got my SVN environment set, started doing development work.
I got a lockup, had to reboot....Came back as 10.04.
I have only one hard drive (/dev/sda), 4 partitions.
My new files all seem to be there, are accessible and valid. Just the OS version has reverted??!?!?!?
How do I get back to 10.10 (without doing another update, install cycle)? Surely it's there somewhere...
Looking at the grub list, only Ubuntu 10.04 is an option.Looking at the /boot directory, there are several initrd.img files that are newer than the ones associated with 10.04 in the grub/menu.lst file (i.e., Ubuntu 10.04.1 = initrd...2.6.27, whereas there are other files in the boot directory like 2.6.26, 2.6.31 and 2.6.32)
I've installed Ubuntu inside Windows 7 with the Ubuntu Windows installer. I have previously had problems with booting Ubuntu, but it always got to GRUB at least. Now it shows the Windows bootloader, I select Ubuntu and the computer just reboots.
