I do not know what to do, i cannot load windows partition. it just loads grub again. this must have been something that happened when i upgraded to the 10.04 or w/e. can someoen help me out with what i can do to stop this or fix it. maybe i can reinstall but i want to know what will work first, i do not have a lot of time to fool with my computer like this again. i spent a week getting ubuntu on my computer the first time so i do not ever want to spend that much time again especially in finals week. !

Fairly new to Ubuntu (started with Karmic), now dualbooting Lucid and Windows 7. Lucid is automatically mounting my NTSC partitions, which is pretty convenient since I store all my media there, but I recently deleted one of the partitions and just extended the other one. Now Lucid is still trying to automatically mount the partition that no longer exists and giving me an error message every time I boot up. Not really a big deal, just a minor annoyance, but I'm wondering what I do to make it realize the partition is gone.

I had to re-install Windows XP because the install was running slow. So, I created another partition using GParted for my personal data and moved my files there and re-installed Windows XP.Now, the Windows partition won't mount automatically.NTFS Configuration Tool shows 0.0GB. So, I have to open up a Terminal window, and issue sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/Windows and everything is fine.

I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot to play with a while ago, but I really don't have time to be testing it right now, so I'm wanting to set the GRUB menu to automatically pick Windows 7 instead of me having to hang around waiting for the menu to pop up and hitting the right buttons when I'm barely conscious.
Someone linked me here: [URL] and I found the menu.lst file, but when I opened it to edit the default, it was blank ... is the file elsewhere now or something? Do I not have access rights to the file? What's going on, what do I do?

I just reinstalled Ubuntu alongside windows for a dual install. The installation went ok but when Ubuntu said it needed to restart to complete, now my pc just loads windows 7 everytime. It doesnt give me an option of choosing Ubuntu. I know the install worked because when I look at my drive in windows it is the partitioned size. Any way to manually launch Ubuntu?

I have dual boot on my laptop. First OS is Windows XP and second is Ubuntu 10.10.
When I click on places menu in Ubuntu, I can access Windowz XP Drives.
If I access some pdf file or document while in Ubuntu which is in Windows XP Drive, then it will come in Recent Document in Places menu.
Now I restart Ubuntu and click on Recent Documents and click on the document which I accessed in last session ( before restart ).
It says Unable to Open Document.
Then I click Places again and access my Windows XP drive. Then again I click Recent Document and click on document, I am able to open the document.
My guess is this happens because my windows drives are not mounted automatically when I start Ubuntu. How can I mount Windows drive automatically when I start Ubuntu.

Could i install ubuntu and whenever i boot my pc up, is it possible to boot up automatically into windows without any OS choosing screen appearing; and instead only boot into ubuntu when i have the livecd in my drive and boot from it?Im the only one who knows about Ubuntu in my family and most would be quite confused if they didnt find thereselves booting into windows as they normally would. So to get around this and to have Ubuntu at the same time, i want to only be able to access ubuntu by putting in the live cd and booting it from that. Or is it possible for information that i download etc. to be stored onto the livecd itself?

I would like that the windows I am working on are reopened automatically at login, so I checked
System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options Tab -> Check Automatically remember running applications when logging out.
It works but, unfortunately, sometimes windows are reopened in different workspaces. I have six workspaces and I usually keep a lot of windows opened, so rearranging them takes long.
Is there a way to ensure that windows are reopened in the same workspace?

First, let me start off by saying that for the past 5-6 months I've been using Linux stand-alone without Windows at all. Recently though, I got netflix and found that there is no support for Linux distros. So, begrudgingly, I installed a small Windows Partition on my computer. So here's the problem: I can't boot back into Ubuntu. Whenever I turn on my computer, it automatically boots up into Windows 7. I know my Ubuntu partition is still there, because when I boot from my live disc I can see it. Is there a way I can fix this using Windows and/or a live disc?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and I'm trying to automatically mount two shares from the Windows Vista SP2 host. Currently this is failing with the message "mount error(112): Host is down".
I recently upgraded VMWare Server. Before the upgrade I was able to mount shares without a problem. I can still mount shares on the host using the builtin "Connect to server" feature in Gnome. The problem I'm running into is mounting shares via the command line or via fstab. The relevant lines from my fstab are below.
Just a couple notes: the IP address of the host is static on the virtual network, so using the IP address as the server name should not be an issue. Also, I am able to ping the host fine (which obviously must be true for me to mount using the Gnome feature).

I'm trying to automatically mount a windows share in a Fedora 12 instance (FC12).When I manually mount things work:mount -t cifs //nas01/servers -o username=guest, password=myPassword /mnt/nas01/serversIf I update /etc/fstab with the following://nas01/servers /mnt/nas01/servers cifs username=guest, password=myPassword 0 0Nothing happens after reboot. The thing that has me baffled is after a reboot if I run:mount -aThe share is mounted.

I have beating my brains out trying to get Lucid Lynx connected to an SME Server 7.4 to automatically mount windows shares. The winbind stuff seems to work okay after I installed a restart script in /etc/network/if-up.d (kudos to OsGnuru & bobpaul for that) There is a short wait on network up before winbind can validate but that is not a show stopper. I have looked at (what I think) is the correct log for pam_mount and it seems to be running through to the end process okay. It looks like it is either not reading the pam_mount.conf.xml file or I have not configured it correctly as it just reports "No Volumes to Mount". I have appended the log file, pam_mount auth, password, session & common conf files as well as the pam_mount.conf.xml file for review.

I installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.

I have Windows 7 and Fedora 14 both on my laptop in dual boot configuration. When my computer starts up it shows a screen that says press any button to select another operating system to start, then I can make Windows 7 start. But after 2 seconds, if I DON'T press any button then Fedora starts automatically. How can I change this so Windows starts automatically when I don't press any button?

I am having trouble getting grub to automatically boot into ubuntu server. When I turn on my server the grub menu shows up and shows me the choices. They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. I tried looking through the grub 2 documentation but nothing seemed to work when I edited the conf file.
