i was trying to change a few setting in Ubuntu and i pressed something and lost everything on my desktop....no taskbar, icons, no power button in the top corner, no nothing
View 4 RepliesI have checked quite a few post without coming up with an answerIhave Lucid 32bit release installed with compiz visual effects normal.I have lost the mounted drive icons from the desktop as well as the ability to save to the desktop or a right click menu on the desktop.
Any file saved to the desktop folder does not appear on the desktop.I have reinstalled compiz, the nvidia driver and tried all manner of settings but just can't crack this one
I have lost some icons from my desktop, they are, firefox, yast, thunderbird, emacs, the space and the names are still there, and when I hover the mouse over the space, it is highlighted as it should be. The application opens and runs as normal when I click on the space where the icon should be. The icons are also missing from the favorites bar on the left side and also from the panel top left when the app is running.I have tried, rebuilding the icon cache in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor', and also all othercon caches for that matter, and no difference. I tried uninstalling and installing the app, no differenence. I tried changing themes and icons from Tweak Tool, no difference. As far as I can see the icons are there in the hicolor directory

my monitor size is 17" Samsung .
i dont understand how to solve the problem.
when i see on other systems its correctly detecting the monitor size and company.
but on my system its showing unknown for monitor company & the resolution 900 X 600 (16:10).
on my friend system the resolution is 1024 X 768(4:3). but on my system the max resolution is only 900 X 600 (16:10).
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using wubi.exe and after I rebooted back into Windows 7, all my desktop icons are gone, everything, including folders and/or files. I go to the Desktop folder and see my items, so I can at least access the files, but nothing appears on my desktop at all
View 4 Replies View RelatedI killed a Process from the System Monitor, it was something related to notifications. From that time, I'm not getting any notification icons on the top-bar. It doesn't shows me any application icons. like VLC, XCHAT or even the Active Connection icon. Except that, everything is working as like a fresh install. I'd restarted my system later but it's still the same. I want to restore the system.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a usb stick and have been running it from there. I was messing around with the "Login Screen" utility and changed the session choice to "User defined session" (or something similar). I thought this would allow me to pick the session to use (Unity, Gnome) but that was wrong. So right now, when I login, I have a blank screen with no menu bars. If someone could give me the commandline command to run the "Login Screen", I should be able to switch it back.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI edited some mpeg videos using Mencoder to crop unwanted footage from the beginning and the end. It worked, but now the file does not have a "visual" icon, i.e. a still from the video. The properties of the new file also reveal that it thinks it's an audio file! The file still plays (as a video) okay though.A typical command I used to extract just the first 14 seconds of the video was:
mencoder "e03.mpg" -o ee03a.mpg -ss 0:0:0 -endpos 0:0:14 -oac copy -ovc copyI did try to make up a new icon by making a snapshot of the movie playing, then using the image to replace the icon in the properties window. (I am using Nautilus file manager in Ubuntu). The icon it now gives me looks like a small sheet of paper with one end curled up.I can appreciate that editing the video length might have "lost" the icon information, but is there any way I can put it back again
Last night everything was fine and running normally.When I booted up today all my windows have no borders and the maximize/minimize/close buttons are all gone! WTF? Did somebody eat them?I have read many threads with several fixes but none has worked for me I have uninstalled emerald as I thought that may be the cause, but it's still the same.Screen effects are still present (wobbly windows).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, at first everything worked fine. Then i changed the compiz configuration to cube, confirmed some questions, and now i have no window decorations. No icons for close, minimize, maximize. No resizing by mouse. No title bar.
In the launcher, i lost applications and files&?, and in the top menu bar, i lost the leftmost part, where some menus and the Ubuntu icon were found.
I just upgraded tu ubuntu 11 and messed up something having to do with the taskbars(upper and lower) and the window options (minimize maximize close) so I am limited to do almost nothing. How can I fix this

I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
I'm running 10.04, and I was wondering if there was way to switch the taskbars on the top/bottom or even edit whats on which taskbar, or move to the sides etc? I have the Gnome desktop included with 10.04.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using it for the last 2 weeks or so without any troubles. Today I did an update and upon rebooting I have had a major issue. The wallpaper loads, but no taskbars. At the same time i'm prompted to agree or to not agree with the Skype End User License Agreement. Those are the only things on the screen! The wallpaper and Skype agreement. Also the mouse pointer is now an X.

Have had it on the laptop for a couple days and everything worked greatattempted to see what if Compiz would work and could not get it going. The computer froze upd to hard restart. When I did that and came back I found I have no desktop icons; if I log out and relog back in but switch to classic ubuntu the desktop is fine (of course not the Unity screen). I removed Compiz and attempted to remove and reinstall Unity based on a Google search but nothing changed.Two questions:1. what is the best next move to see if I can get the Unity icons and correct interface back on the desktop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been looking at Ubuntu for a couple years and finally decided to give it a try on an old Dell laptop 1150.Managed to get it loaded on and it all came up, did the updates.But the desktop will not respond. When the mouse arrow passes over on the left side icons it will sometimes change the color of them but still won't do anything.I did a quick search but did not see anything relatedam an absolute rookie with this Linux thing. Did I make the right choice with Ubuntu?

It is running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with Gnome and the default "Human" theme.As the machine was delivered, there was only one icon on the desktop. This afternoon I closed a window (after successfully installing Dropbox) to reveal the desktop, and discovered that this icon had increased in size enormously, taking up about half the height of the screen (which is 640x480). I have no idea why this has happened.I also find now that new icons I put on the desktop appear at this huge size. I can resize them individually, of course, but even at the smallest they will go to they are still too big, and in any case I want icons to default to the original, sensible (small!) size.
View 3 Replies View Relatedwhen I right click on my desktop and use Clean up by Name (Keep Aligned is checked) it aligns my desktop icons in a strange way! non of the rows are aligned! and there is a gap between 2nd and 3rd column! also some PDF icons are bigger that others! how can i set all of them equal and really aligned?!
