Red Hat / Fedora :: Fresh Fedora Install And Missing Taskbars?

problem, I have just installed Fedora 13 on to a new build but for some reason I am missing the top and bottom taskbars. I can see the GNOME desktop with two icons, I have managed to get yum running, which is currently downloading updates. I have used the same live CD on other systems with incident.Just wondering if there is some thing I could try to reset or start a service setting etc to get the taskbars to show?
I've never had any problems before,but I just did a fresh install of 10.04.1 on a brand new drive yesterday. I noticed this morning that I have no sound drivers(under the hardware tab of sound preferences, there is nothing listed). I found a thread that had this line to run:

so I just installed Squeeze Alpha1 amd64, dual boot with MS Vista using Grub. Everything seemed fine, but I'm apparently missing about 40GB of space. It should be set up as so:
101GB NTFS /dev/sda1 - Vista 12GB NTFS /dev/sda2 - HP Recovery 45GB ext3 /dev/sda3 - / Debian squeeze
I recently bought an F12 DVD (from a UK supplier) which I took to be a "full distribution". But looking back on the web site it was not described as such. After booting I selected the Replace Existing Linux System option and it listed the installation of 204 packages - much smaller than the 933 packages when I installed F9. The kernel is now FEDORA (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE)
My problem is that I am now faced with a very intimidating terminal. I am sure the installation did not offer a graphical interface. I have tried to get Gnome running by following the Installation Guide :- 1) 7.4.2 Booting into a Graphical Environment I type in -gedit /etc/inittab and I get back --bash: gedit: command not found
2) 15.3 Switching to a Graphical Login I type -yum group install "GNOME Desktop Environment" Response -Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again.
3) Again under 15.3 - bullet point 3) Type -/etc/inittab Response --bash: /etc/inittab: permission denied
I have now run out of ideas. I'm sure it is not supposed to be difficult but I don't understand the implications of the command line responses. I really don't want to be condemned to a win dependency.
I have a problem with fresh installation of Fedora 14. I've installed it from LiveCD, everything worked fine, but after installing security updates, Fedora stoped working. I mean, not immediately, but right after rebooting. Firstly, I got 1 more option to choose in Grub (which system).
This was also in Ubuntu, so I choosed the first option,- Fedora stopped booting right before the end. Also the second option didn't boot, and now I have to use this ugly Vista
I don't know what to do, reinstalling whole system won't be a problem, but what if it repeats?
It's Fedora 14 using GNOME with i686 architecture.
I had ubu 904 and vista installed on an 80gb drive, i had a spare 80gb drive also. I setup a raid0 config in my bios, then installed ubu9.10 onto it. All was fine until the very end, and then it said grub failed to install.
So i rebooted, and im left with a blinking cursor. How do i install grub? Ive installed ubu a few times now and never had an issue so now im lost.
I recently finished a fresh reinstall of Fedora 11 on my ASUS EeePC 1000HA today. Once I rebooted, it asked for the usual "first time user thing" and I proceeded. After that screen, I was brought to the loging manager, so I logged in, and was presented with my destkop. I fired up the terminal, added myself to the sudoer's file and did a "sudo yum update" but was given the following error (the beginning of the text got cut off due to how lengthy the update list was): [URL].
I have just installed F 12 - clean install- but when I go to get updates today (Dec 2nd) no updates appear.I have done yum clean and yum makecache but still no updates available in software updates
Sometimes httpd (the apache web server) fails to start and displays an error (98: Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80). This happens even when no other service is listening on port 80, as evident from the output of "lsof -i :80" and "netstat -A inet -lnp". This is due to a configuration file mixup. Both /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and /etc/httpd/conf.d/system-config-httpd.conf contain the directive "Listen :80". If you comment out the "Listen 80" in /etc/httpd/conf.d/system-config-httpd.conf, httpd will again start.
I decide to install F15 (other machines run F14) and after a pretty smooth install and reboot, I try to login and get the message "Oh no, something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again". But no matter how long I try, I keep getting this message. Then I go to crt-alt-F2, and try to "yum install gnome-panel". Then it shows that I don't have any network connection at all, even though I did install my network. I'm thinking of installing F14 now.
I'm trying to install FC15 x64, the install goes smooth and reports no errors, I looked around in /tmp/anaconda.log but couldn't see any relevant errors either, basically after rebooting and trying to boot my new install, I get:

I've reinstalled 3 times now, first I was using USB, but now have tried with CD too. All I want is for GRUB to be installed on /dev/sda2 which is where my install is, and which is also the default location where the installer supposedly installs it to. I've also tried unplugging my other hard disks, and installing with just the first drive.

All, just did a freash install of fedora 10, and I have no sounds at all. Speakers work and are pluged in (everything works fine with my ubuntu partition) Nothing appears to be muted in alsa or on the gnome volume control Sound card = Creative Labs CA0106 Soundblaster
Just tried new Fedora 11 yesterday, did a fresh install with ext3 /boot and ext4 file system, booting looks great, but wireless doesn't work. I have tried using broadcom-wl, dnmouse script, dnmouse broadcom f11 rpm, fwcutter but not ndiswrapper

Even tried to blacklist b43 after installing broadcom-wl driver, but no luck. Broadcom-wl works fine with Fedora 10 on my laptop, is it possibly because of the new ext4 file system? Should I try ndiswrapper or install Fedora 10 again and do a preupgrade? I also use fedora at work.
I just downloaded the F11 x64 DVD iso, and I when I try to install it, after the media check screen, Anaconda starts it load, but it says "X failed to start, falling back to text mode" (or something like that). The install goes through (in text mode), and all that gets installed is the basic environment.

I've tried Ubuntu x86 on the same system, but I was having issues with it, so I decided to try FC11 instead.
Ok, I booted with the live cd and used Fdisk to delete all partitions and wipe the drive. I used the "Replace existing Linux system" install option and let it roll. I'm currently running F11 and am trying to replace it with a fresh install of F13, using the same partitioning layout. I downloaded the F13 i386 DVD ISO using bit torrent. (The sha256sum of my downloaded ISO matches the reference sha256sum value.) I'm trying to do the fresh install of this ISO from hard drive (without burning a DVD). Last summer I did the same procedure of installing a downloaded DVD ISO from HDD when replacing F9 with F11. The installer (Anaconda 13.42) proceeds to the point where I specify my custom partitioning layout. It then prompts me about storing a boot loader. Shortly after I reply to that, the installer gets an "unhandled exception".

I've installed F13 on a DELL computer. Everything works fine except that under KDE menu if I click on 'shutdown', I have the confirmation windows but the computer never shutdown. Same issue with the the logout button. If I want to stop my commuter I have to open a terminal and type " shutdown now" or "halt".
I am having a problem accessing my samba shares from my notebook that has a fresh install of Fedora 15. I know that the server with the samba shares is working since I can access them from the windose box. I have just moved from using Ubuntu to Fedora and have definitely found my home. How would I tell if samba is running (or any service for that matter) on my notebook? I Installed samba-client

I was following a tutorial about 6 months ago that I think may have been for a different version of Fedora than I was running. Long story short I screwed up my installation and cannot get past this screen. The login screen has lost all of it's custom GUI theme and I can't log in. For one reason because after 6 months I can't remember my password (which is also strange because I only use the same few passwords for OS logins). I also get this error that pops up and then goes away on it's own.
Install Problem! The configuration manager defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator. I also get a caution sign icon like this one in the system tray on the login page. When I click on it it tells me that: Starting Avahi deamon... [FAILED]
I'm not sure I want to spend the time fixing the install as I was planning on giving KDE a spin. I do, however, want to be able to recover some files on the partitions that Fedora was using. Can I just install Fedora KDE on a fresh hard drive and be able to see those partitions automatically and then transfer it to an external? Or will I have to find and mount all of those partitions manually? Also, will I even be able to gain access to those files considering I don't remember my password?

I'm stuck with installing Fedora Core I have 2 hard drives both 80Gb I want to install a fresh copy on one of the drives to do a dual boot I have vista on the main hard drive this is where I am at Installation requires partitioning of your hard drive by default, a partitioning layout is chosen which is reasonable for most users. You can either choose to use this or create your owe. Select the drive to use for this installation?
I have had a search around, any cannot find any thing I can make sense of as to how I go about getting the above card to work with Fedora 11. Just done a fresh install (need Linux for some development) but have no wifi. My chipset is this Broadcom BCM4310. There seems to be a whole load of options, and I don't know which works and which don't:
kmod-wl broadcom-wl ndiswrapper
I can sit with an Ethernet cable to install/update as necessary, but really could do with wireless.
I just installed F11KDE, and I am trying to get it to run Flash content in Firefox. I have been searching for solutions for well over an hour and have found nothing that works. How can I get my installation of the Firefox browser to play Flash content. How do I install it? I have tried
# yum install flashplug-in or something to that effect, as well other attempts of different varieties, i.e.-rpm, yumex. Nothing is working.
I've now tried several times to install a fresh copy Fedora 13 i386 on my old Dell laptop, but each time I reboot the laptop I get the first-time welcome screen which asks you to create a user. When I re-enter my user info, it tells me that there's already a folder created for that user. After rebooting, I'm back to that screen. Does anyone know what's going on here?
I installed fedora 15 and i m not able to change the monitor resolution. if I open the display settings I just get the choice between 1024x768 and 800x600.
