Ubuntu :: DD Image Restores Larger Than Actual Size

Feb 13, 2011

I've been working on getting another OS installed on my computer for one of my classes (OS specific assembly instructions). To get this OS running, I had to start using a GPT rather than a MBR table. I backed up my Ubuntu partition (ext4) using the old-fashioned dd command. I've since been able to get everything working again after a dd restore.

The problem is that my original Ubuntu partition was only about 50GB and the dd image only takes up 40 GB. After I restored the image to the new drive (146BG), gparted is reporting 119GB used and only 26GB free. What can I do to reduce the size of my install to 40GB again?

When looking at the disk in baobab, it says the the filesystem is only 47.2 GB and that only 20.9 GB has been used. This is likely what the old partition's breakdown was. So my new question is: How can I make the filesystem capacity (47.2 GB) equal that of the partition that it is on (146 GB)?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Windows Display Larger Than The Available Screen Size

Sep 1, 2011

In Ubuntu 11.04, all windows display larger than the available screen size, and I haven't found a way to make them fit within the display area of the monitor. This is a Dell 19" flat screen monitor, and I've tried changing the display; no matter what resolution is selected, the windows all bleed past the screen.

Ubuntu :: Notification Icons Not Appearing?

Aug 12, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my iBook and for some reason the Notification Area (2.30.2) just stopped working. Like it shows it's there, yet I'm not seeing any icons or anything show up. Which is the only way I get online from it at the moment. Right now I'm typing this from someone else's laptop.

Ubuntu :: Icons Not Appearing On LXPanel

Feb 26, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS installed on an AMD K6-2 system. When logging in with LXDE, certain icons such as the HP Toolbox and the Update Manager do not appear on the LXDE Task Bar when they should. The HP icon should appear after logging in (It automatically does with XFCE.) For the HP icon to appear, I have to manually run HPLIP Toolbox.

The various Update Manager icons (gray - package manager working, orange - updates available, red - important updates available) also do not appear at all under LXDE automatically and the only way to see if there are any updates is to manually run Update Manager after a period of time, which should not be necessary. These same icons also automatically appear under XFCE.

Is there something that I can look at to see why these are not appearing? I know there is a file /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Under "Desktop Session Settings", the only two items listed are Screensaver and PolicyKit Authorization Agent, neither of these are checked. When adding hp-toolbox to the autostart file, it completely launched the HP Toolbox in addition to displaying the icon.

I only want the icon to appear and would launch hp-toolbox as needed. The only icons that appear automatically after an LXDE login, are the Network Connection, ScreenLock and Shutdown icons. It does not appear to be kernel-dependent as I had both the generic and 386 kernels installed on this (now have only the 386 installed) and the icons did not appear with either kernel used.

Fedora :: Runlevel 3 - Larger Console Fonts Or Increase Size

Aug 1, 2010

I have fedora 13 set up on a HP6715S laptop. Runlevel 3 is a problem, because the capital letters are the size of full stops. Reading a little, I can try a grub vga setting, but I am not keen as my screen is 1200x800 and X cannot set it otherwise, so I doubt grub could. There's KMS for radeon cards, and the kernel can do what it likes. The biggest font supplied with fedora is sun12x22, which doesn't even have a euro sign. I gather I can go to a height of 32. Anyone know of larger consolefonts, or a wheeze to double the size of one of the others, e.g. lat9w-16? setfont-h32 increases height, but not zoom, so it's like a double spaced console.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Change Icons Size And Gaps Size

Oct 22, 2015

today I upgraded via official testing repository Gnome to version 3.18. After this, icons on desktop and nautilus are bigger, than before. Next thing, gaps between icons are smaller than before. I tried change theme to default (Adwaita), then run gtk-update-icon-cache, but without result.

Normal view - icons are big for this view. URL....

Small view - icons are still big for this view. URL...

How can I change icons size and gaps size? Or is it bug for this version?

General :: Virtualized Screen Resolution - Use A Larger Size Display That Is Configured By Default

Apr 18, 2010

I have a 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 workstation with two virtualized guest OSes using KVM/QEMU. Also both 64-bit. One is Fedora 12 the other is beta of Ubuntu 10.04.

The problem is that I would like to use a larger size display that is configured by default.

Both guest OSes have a maximum screen resolution of 1024x768. I would like to increase this to something like 1280x900 or 1440x900. The resolution of the host system is 1920x1080.

This configuration appears to be a result of the installation detecting the resolution being reported by the virtual screen during installation.

The only information I have found on the subject suggests modifying the xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 directory. Neither guest system has this file.

I tried creating one by hand in the Fedora system and managed to render it completely unusable. Not a big deal as this is recently installed and can be reinstalled easily.

Ubuntu :: Change Size Of Gnome Icons?

Jun 29, 2010

I'm sorry if this is a trivial question.
I want to know how the size of the gnome icons in toolbars (see pic) is specified. Those icons for 'new', 'open', 'save', ... that are used in Nautilus or Gedit.
I just played around with the gtkrc of my theme, but I couldn't find any option there. Aren't the icons scaleable? Are there smaller icon sets available?

Ubuntu :: Change Default Size Of Pdf Icons?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm wondering if it's possible to change the default size of pdf and image icons on my whole filesystem because it doesn't look proportional to the other icons like the folders and text files and I really don't want to stretch each one of them everytime.

Here's an example:

The other way the size could be fixed is by going to edit > preferences > preview and just do never for each drop down but I don't want to lose the preview effect.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Change ALL Shortcut Icons' Size?

Aug 3, 2011

I have read the 5, 10, 12 things to do after installing 11.04! I have installed Compiz Config Settings Manager and have played with the Launcher Icon Size slider.

That works well with "the Launcher" on the left but has no effect on the icons in the Shortcuts menu that appears when you hit the "Super" key. These are now so huge they run off the left of the screen (see attached screen capture). There is nothing obviously different from Compiz in the gconf Configuration Editor either. When you go into one of the sub-menus (e.g. More Apps) the icons are fine and fit to screen. PS, I like slightly bigger fonts and icons by default in everything and achieve this through a smaller Monitor resolution.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Icons - Change The Default Size?

Jul 3, 2010

I cannot figure out how to make my desktop icons smaller. I know I can right click and "stretch icon", but that only resizes them individually. If I can change the size of them individually,Im thinking I can also, somehow change the default size, of all of them at once.I am currently working on some graphics projects for the observatory and it's easiest to save them to my desktop for now.but they are so big ,that before i know it, they are overlapping each other. stretching them to a smaller size one by one is a time killer.Usually I dont keep icons on my desktop, only the icons for my external drives and the like.

Debian Multimedia :: Personal Icon Not Appearing In Login Screen

May 31, 2015

I recently installed Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment, which uses the Lightdm gtk greeter as its login manager. My login screen at the moment looks something like this: [URL] ..... In particular, I still have the "grey person" as the default user avatar.

I have been unsuccessfully attempting to change my personal login avatar, following the advice on the Arch Linux wiki: [URL] .... I began by naming my desired avatar .face and saving it in my home directory. That didn't work, but I was not discouraged because the wiki mentioned that there were issues with the ".icon method". So I then installed accountservice, created a directory for my user, and saved my desired avatar as a 96x96 PNG named username.png in the appropriate directory (making sure that it had the necessary permissions, of course). That didn't work either...
