Debian :: Assign The 2.6.32-3-686 Kernel To Be The Default In Grub?

I recently installed Squeeze. I noticed there are 2 main kernels installed. One first one at the top is 2.6.32-trunk-686 and the other is 2.6.32-3-686. At the time, I did not know or think much about it. Now when I try to get linux headers to compile drivers, I am not finding them. I also read some problems with trunk kernels.
How can I assign the 2.6.32-3-686 kernel to be the default in grub? Is it OK to use it as the main kernel?
Do I need to upgrade the trunk kernel to rid of trunk or just don't use it?

I have Lucid on my laptop. Unfortunately, with the various 2.6.32 kernels neither hibernate nor suspend work, so I've installed and use the last 2.6.31 kernel that came with Karmic.Now, I'd like to set it as default, so that I don't need to actively choose it when I boot. The problem is that I can't find a way to set Grub (version 2.0, or 1.96rc, can't remember) to pick the 2.6.31 kernel and if I try to uninstall the 2.6.32-23 kernel synaptic says that linux-generic and linux-headers will also be uninstalled (not just the parts specific to 2.6.32-23).

A recent kernel upgrade broke nvidia and the network card. I figured out how to get the grub boot menu, but am having trouble figuring out how to set the default kernel to boot. I believe there used to be a file called /boot/grub/menu.lst that one could edit, but it doesn't appear to exist now.

I dual-boot my machine and I want it to default to boot into windows so that whenever I restart the machine remotely from my home it will be able to get back into Windows (instead of Ubuntu).
The problem is that every time Ubuntu upgrades the kernel, I have to reset the default boot item of grub back to windows. This is because the grub menu loader uses positions i.e. 6 for default OS to boot. And when Ubuntu installs a new kernel it changes that order.
I am looking for a way to configure grub to remember its default boot item under kernel updates.

Possible Duplicate:Make grub keep its default boot under kernel updates.I have just installed Linux with my windows 7 pre-installed and i got it working fine. Since i use windows 7 more than linux, i would like to have "Windows 7" option on the top of "Linux" option.
"When i have turn on my computer, the first thing i see is an Option asking me whether i want to use windows 7 or Linux and there's a countdown timer below it which is 10seconds countdown and if i don't select it on time, it will automatically select the first choice which at the moment i've got Linux pre-set as my first choice."

So far I've tried to add a number to 'GRUB_DEFAULT=', but it wouldn't want to boot in anything other than Debian or Windows, same with StartUp-Manager...
I currently have the liquorix kernels installed, but I can't get to use them as the standard Debian kernel is always picked. So is there any way to change this behaviour?

I'm installing debian squeeze and and I've got 2 hdd (sda,sdb), but I want to install it on sdb. When i get to the "Install the grub boot loader on the hard disk" it automatically installs it on /dev/sda (and I get an error), I want to install it on /dev/sdb... Is it possible.

I am using Debian lenny (kernel 2.6.26-2-686).
I changed my menu.lst to use
root=UUID=<long uuid string>
instead of the good old
root=/dev/sd...
I did that because, if I boot with a usb drive attached to my computer, sda become sdb and therefor nothing works anymore since my friend Kernel can't mount it's root partition. BTW, it works wonders using the UUIDs. The story darkens each time there is a kernel update, dist-upgrade resets my menu.lst back using the /dev/sd... format. and BANG... no more booting again. I am good to change my menu.lst back each time.

Background: I am dual booting Debian and Window 7. Wanted to make windows-loader default and hide grub if possible. Google search took me here: [URL].... (third answer, about editing grub)
Make Windows (ANY variant) the default Grub2 menu option.
Description: This sets Windows as the default boot option, and (with NO user action) the PC will auto-launch Windows on startup.
STEPS:
A. sudo update-grub #List your current menu items
B. Edit setup file
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=”Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1″ #Set the boot default to your Windows boot partition
[WARNING: Just setting 'GRUB_DEFAULT=n', will NOT work after kernel updates, etc.
Save the file and close.]
sudo update-grub
Question: I must have done something wrong, for update-grub (as root) now gives this: "/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 6: /etc/default/grub: 2: not found"
What should I do now to make grub as it was in the beginning?
[By the way, it's been very difficult to get Debian related pages...]

I installed Lenny on a computer and set up grub to boot windows by default with a timeout of 0 Is there a way to interrupt the boot process so I can boot linux? I'm currently working with wireless network kernel module.
This device initialiy gets its IP address by using DHCP,
but the problem is sometimes the new IP assigned for internal reason.
So what I want to do is assigning new(changed)IP address into exsiting
interface, or occuring DHCP renew event to cause update IP from kernel
level. This shold be done without user's intervention, so whenever the
kernel module detects IP changed(via underlying wireless
communication), it automatically correct update its IP address.
Q1) any functions or api to cause DHCP renew event from kernel level?
Q2) or any functions or api to assign IP address to specific interface?

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

I just installed ProFTPD. So I want to create a user namely ftpadmin. He belongs to the new usergroup ftpuser that I just created.
sudo groupadd ftpuser
sudo useradd -s /bin/false -g ftpuser -d /var/www ftpadmin
sudo passwd ftpadmin
.....
chmod -R g+w /var/www
and when I followed the tutorial
chown -R ftpadmin /var/www/*, chgrp -R users /var/www/*
it returned an error "invalid mode: ftpadmin " why?I want my users to login my server via FTP

I'm trying to assign pci devices to pci-stub at boot before any of the kernel drivers can access it. I've successfully managed to do this on a Ubuntu system but I cannot get it to work on Debian. I've set pci-stub to load as a module in /etc/modules. I've then tried both these methods:
Add pci_stub ids=8086:100f to /etc/initramfs-tools/modulesSet GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="pci_stub.ids=8086:100f" in /etc/default/grub.
Both give the same result after updating grub/initramfs and a reboot: when I check "dmesg | grep pci-stub" I get:
Code: Select all[ 1.522487] pci-stub: add 8086:100F sub=FFFFFFFF:FFFFFFFF cls=00000000/00000000
The actual device id's are not claimed by stub. Same for lspci -v which shows that the devices are still using the kernel drivers.Again, this configuration works on Ubuntu. Also issuing the following commands successfully assigns one of the devices to pci-stub but I need it to work on boot before the kernel drivers load:

Over the past few days I have been trying to install an older kernel (kernel 2.6.28.1) on ubuntu 9.10 64-bit WUBI installation. I compiled, installed, and updated my grub for the kernel. When I reboot, the grub menu correctly gives me the option of booting into the older kernel but when I do so I receive the following error message:
error: you need to load the linux kernel first.
I am at a complete loss on how to fix this. I even downgraded grub but I still get the same error.

I have a problem that Google didn't give me a workable solution so I'm posting my question here, hoping that someone has an idea.On a virtual server (VMWare) running Debian 5 I have a disk of 15Gb.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible? I've been playing around with GParted but unsuccessfully. The other option is to 'move' the whole server to a new (to create) virtual server that uses LVM. Any ideas?

I have some beginner questions about DHCP, Avahi, and configuring a small home LAN.Suppose I have a dynamic IP address assigned by my ISP, which requires DHCP be enabled in my dsl modem/router/"firewall" [sic]. Suppose for simplicity I have just one PC behind the dsl modem.I think "enabling DHCP" in the modem/router means that a DHCP client runs on the router, which communicates with a DHCP server run by my ISP when I boot up a PC on my LAN. Is that guess correct? Can I get DHCP to assign a particular local IP, say 192.168.1.10 (which is not the one taken by the router--- for this discussion, let's say that is 192.168.1.0) to my PC each time I boot it up?
Now suppose I want to build a stand-alone firewall, so that my LAN will have the firewall and the first PC behind the modem, with the first PC virtually behind the firewall. By default, I think these will both have DHCP clients running which I need to configure properly. The firewall should also have a DHCP server which should control how local IP addresses are assigned, correct? I should try to arrange that the LAN has only DHCP server, only one NTP timeserver, only one DNS nameserver, correct?My first PC seems to have installed an autorun client called Avahi, which performs DNS multicast services and incorporates something called zeroconf which seems to have something to do with remote desktops, which I don't need and which is a potential security hazard. But it seems that Avahi is an intrinsic part of the KDE desktop and cannot be removed. Just want to be sure that Avahi can coexist comfortably with dhcp3-client, which is also installed on that PC. They perform different tasks, correct?If I can get the stand-alone firewall to work, I know I need to turn off the commercial firewall in the dslmodem/router/firewall device. Should I purchase a bridge and try to turn off the routing function also?
