- How do I know which one is the newest and if happy with it, how to remove the older one?
After my most recent update, the boot sequence hangs at:"a start job is running for Create Volatile files and directories" with a timer and no limit .. I let it go for 12 minutes, but nothing.It seems as long as this sequence remains, the boot process does not finish and just hangs here.I haven't been able to find anything specific to this. I currently cannot boot into this machine, though do have access to files via dual boot.

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.
I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.
I used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.
I am using DEBIAN 6.0 and I wannna update my kernel from 2.6.32 to 2.6.38. Every time, I do it but after the installation & rebooting into the new kernel it gives me error "UNABLE TO BOOT INTO THE KERNEL".

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Lenny inside a xp. I changed my installation and make a boot partition , a home directory, and a system directory. now I reinstall my xp and do this:
find /grub/stage1
root (hd0,6)
setup (hd0,6)
and grub menu found! but when I clicked on debian, can't boot and I have a message about can't boot from this vmlinuz ( or any thing similar!) , click on any key and then it come back to grub menu. my debian is on (hd0,9) and (hd0,6) is my boot partition.
So when i boot up into grub why dose it show 2 versions of ubuntu something like this

I've recently reinstalled all the os's on my computer, just now I'm going with ubuntu (general use) win xp (for flash, it doesnt play nice with 7 for some reason) and win 7 (for games). Everything is fine, but I can't get grub to boot me straight into either of the windows versions: Each option makes brings me to the windows bootloader, where I can choose between "Windows 7" and "Older version of windows". I want to go directly from grub to xp/7, without that extra menu. How do I get rid of it?

I was playing with my netbook and trying to hackintosh it only to realise mic, webcam and network don't work. So I restored the entire disk ubuntu 9.10 from a Ghost image I had made prior. But it doesn't boot, it only shows the word GRUB on top left corner.

I tried using the Ubuntu 10.4 LTR install disk to correct grub, but got stuck at the point where it asks for doing the manual partition.

I know it has something to do with some controller stuff and I could not figure it out. It used to be working till I reboot.
How do you disable startx in Jessie when it boots up? In Wheezy I just had to disable the gdm3 service. I also tried a few settings in grub, but it still starts.

So, how to successfully boot with SYSV ? Of course, the package sysvinit is installed on my system.
First, I have done a snapshot. Nevermind, is the following safe and the correct way to go back to SYSV :

I have two desktops running wheezy for years without problems. Recently, I reinstall jessie on one of them and won't boot anymore.The hardware is pretty normal: Asus motherboard, 12GB RAM, Nvidia video card, SSD hard drive, .After the install of jessie finishes, the very first boot failed, which means it hung up forever. The part that is annoying is that it fails at different places whenever I try.
For example, something, it fails at the following:

Sometimes, it failed at start job is running for lsb set console font.It even failed to the console. When it goes to the console login, I can't put any user name or password. It's all frozen.The problem appears to be video card problem. But it worked fine in wheezy.
I am almost brand new user of Ubuntu 9.10 loaded using Wubi. After an update I can no longer boot from the highest version (-20-generic), but have to start from a previous version (-14-generic). How do I clean up the boot image/configure grub (v 1.97 beta which I believe is Grub 2)?

Jaunty Jackaope was installed 2nd so it has control of grub (I don't know if that is the correct expression) I want to remove Jaunty Jackalope however I know from past experience that after I do this I will no longer be able to boot into Lenny as I will get a grub error at startup. When it gets to the end of the installation process the installer asks whether I want to go ahead with the Grub Boot Loader, I choose yes. The end result is however that I can't boot that partition within the hard drive -- i.e., Debian. Can someone tell me what is going on? Should I not use the Grub Boot Loader when I have more than one operating system on a machine? Should I not install Grub on the Master Boot Record (MBR)?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the following strange thing with a RHEL4 installation. Since last week, the system did a reboot and now something is really fucked up. During boot we get the following messages (don't care about 'strange' typo's, my colleague typed it 'blind' from the screen)

The strange thing is that we never see a 'could not mount blabla' or similar messages. First we thought it was a failing kernel update by plesk, but even after manually updating the kernel with RHN RPM's, still the same message. Booting with rescue mode and then chroot the system works. After that we even can start things like plesk and so on.
We double checked things with another RHEL4 install, and at least two things were odd:
1: the working machine has /dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1, the broken one doesn't
2: some files on /dev didn't have group root, but 252
We tried to recreate the /dev/dm-X nodes with [vgmknodes -v], output:

A fdisk /dev/sda shows: /dev/sda2 XX XXX XXXXX Linux LVM (I removed the numbers because this line is from another machine, but rest was identical)
We have a copy of the boot partition so if one need more info please let me know.

Some thing quite bad happened to me , i installed debian jessie about 2 month ago. Today I wanted to try what a gnu/linux is like so I installed dragora 2.2 on one of my free partitions , (sda 1 is my debian root , sda2 is my debian home, I had sda4 which nothing was on it so i installed dragora on it. But something bad happened , during boot time you get this page which asks you what distro you want to enter in past I had just one choice and it was debian jessie, I expected after installing dragora I will see 2 distros on this page, but i get just 1 , and that's dragora ... but maybe i should mention this that when entering dragora i can access all my previous files , debian systemfile , debian home , they are still there but i can't enter debian jessie ...
