Upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 and ran Update Manager. After this, sda6, the shared volume where I keep my documents, is read/write accessible from Windows, but read-only accessible from Ubuntu.
I've tried chmod and chown, but in each case, changes to permissions or group are prohibited. So is copying of files to the shared volume, and modifying files (e.g., via OpenOffice).
Additional info: Ubuntu takes a long time to boot after GRUB and during the splash, with the disk drive activity light on continuously.
I have been running dual boots for a long time and never had a problem installing Ubuntu.I now tried to install Ubuntu Studio on my performance machine, a DELL Studio XPS, which has (had?) a RAID1 configaration.I got stuck in the partitioning and tried to abandon, which left me with maybe nothing... When I tried to reboot, my machine started Windows but then "autochk program not found". And I am lost for what to do...

/dev/md0 (made from sda1 and sdb1) RAID1 /boot partition
/dev/md1 (made from sda2, sdb2, and sdc2) RAID5 / partition
Earlier on I had some trouble with my sda drive, it dropped itself from both arrays, screwing up the mirroring of my two raid partitions participating in the /boot partition. I eventually got everything sorted out and back in sync. (I also have grub installed to MBR on both sda and sdb). Things are working fine regarding that, but since then I've had this issue:
During boot up, I'll get an error message that it could not mount my /boot partition (when fstab is set to either /dev/md0 or the UUID). It claims c9ab814c-47ea-492d-a3be-1eaa88d53477 does not exist!

As far as I know, it isn't neccessary for /boot to be mounted always, correct? Although, as I understand, I need to have it mounted whenever making kernel changes correct?
I have the following configuration:
2xHDD 300GB RAID1 - OS part
2xHDD 1TB RAID1 - data part.
Both arrays were created inside the bios-like setup.
During the installation of fedora I "checkboxed" only the 300GB OS raid and used it for the installation. Everything is ok with it. After installation finished and I rebooted, I tried to initialize my second RAID1, that's 1TB - I was able, it was OK, I created 1 max-size filesystem there and put some data in it. After reboot this filesystem didn't want to mount for some reason - so I commented it in fstab and to my surprise, when I reached linux - the partition for it doesn't exist!!! Here is some data:

My guess would be that I am not fully and properly initializing the second array, (it's marked as auto read only in cat /proc/mdstat) but I'm not sure how to proceed.
Im trying to recover some data from my friends laptop, since it wont boot from the harddisk anymore. From the knoppix cd i can find harddrive but when i try to access it im asked for a password. However dont know the password I have tried the password from his windows login but that doesnt work. Is there another way to access the drive so i dont have to use a password? If possible i would like to avoid removing the harddrive from the laptop. The installed OS is win7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did not find the solution to my problem reading other posts so I apologize in advance if this question has been solved in a previous thread.I recently started having input/output errors when trying to access directories on my external HD. Today I moved the content of my external HD to a single directory before starting a backup. Since then I can not access this backup directory anymore although the external HD automatically mounts when I turn it on.
I tried my luck starting the external HD in Windows but it wont show up in the explorer. What should I do to be able to mount it in windows and is there any way this would fix the problem?I'm running xubuntu kernel v 2.6.27-14-generic and the external HD is an acomdata.
I had windows 7 and centos 5.5 dual boot earlier working fine.Today I had to format the windows partition and reinstall windows 7. Now I cannot access to my earlier CentOS partition.I need to access it without loosing anything on it. I tried with EasyBCD at Windows but it didn't help.Also tried to get files using an Ubuntu live CD but there that partition shows as LVM.What else I can do to boot CentOS again?

It will appear once I click on System/Preferences/Sound, but otherwise it doesn't show up on the desktop bar. I checked under the Add to Panel feature but no luck - any ideas how to get it back?

I followed the upgrade directions, found here, precisely. However, I am still experiencing some unusual problems, some I think I have resolved, but others are leaving me puzzled.
Before I get to far into this, my working knowledge of *NIX platforms is decent, but I am no where close to expert or advanced.
Problem 1 - KDE Profiles (resolved)
The first problem I experienced was that my KDE profiles were all screwed up, buttons would not work, desktop icons were missing, applications would not start or would show horrid graphics, and the list goes on. Having run through a similar problem with FreeBSD, I decided to simply move my ~/.kde4 to ~/.kde4.orig and then do a forced reinstall of KDE4. This seems to have resolved the issue, I just have to recreate my profile, which should be relatively simple.
Problem 2 - Sound Driver
Shortly after my upgrade, I did have sound, but I had lost control of the volume. This is somewhat expected as with each Kernel update of Linux, I found I had to reinstall the sound drivers, Creative X-Fi. This never presented a problem as it was a 30 second process and very simple to perform (there were three commands, four if you include 'su -'). This time, I ended up running into an error, seen below:

Problem 3 - VMware
Similar to the sound card, each time a new Kernel patch is applied, I have to recompile VMware Workstation 6.5 for it to work again. This is even simpler than the sound drivers as all I do is start VMware and it automatically recompiles. Now, when I go to start it, I receive the two following errors:

Problem 4 - Kernel...
The previous two problems seem to be related to some underlying kernel issue that I have yet to be able to resolve. I have barely been able to change the error messages. So far I have forced a reinstall of almost everything kernel related that was already installed, plus I installed quite a few *-devel packages. I reinstalled 'make' and 'gcc' for good measure, but I am not getting anywhere.
I accidentally removed the volume control icon on the top panel of my desktop. How do I get it back. I'm on 10.04 if that matters.

View 3 Replies View RelatedYou'd think that with two backups of all my data, which are syncronised twice weekly - that I'd be pretty safe. Fine and good until in a reorganisation of my documents folders,I delete a bunch of files - and don't notice until after I've run the backup - so they're deleted from the backups as well. Cue me beating myself around the head with the keyboard a few times about a week later when I realised.I'd advise against doing that if you have a keyboard like the IBM Model-M - it hurts.Okay, so I figure it's at least worth having a stab at recovering this data. The external harddrive's not had anything written to it since then, so is probably the best candidate. It's formatted as an NTFS volume (1.5Tb).
Now, I DO have a copy of R-Studio for Windows which I bought and paid for a few years agowhen XP managed to destroy itself and the file structure on the harddrive when it fell over installing SP2 (this was the event which lead ultimately to me switching to Ubuntu).I've found this to work quite well, though the initial scan does take a while.nfortunately, it does NOT seem to work from within Ubuntu through Wine. It runs, but can't see any drives. The only Windows environment I have access to now is Vista, andR-Studio seems to hang after running for an hour or so under Vista.
Are there any tools - preferably simple enough that I can get my head around them - which I can use from within Ubuntu to have a scrub through an NTFS drive to look for and otentially recover deleted data? I've found several tools which claim to recover things from ext3/4 drives from Windows - but not the other way around!There are a fair selection of filetypes involved here, some word documents, probably most of interest to me though are some old videos, mostly <5Mb taken on my old phone camera from university. Nothing really mission critical...but memories nevertheless.
I encountered problem on my NEW PROD box. I have remaining space of 300GB and i decided the create a /dev/mapper/VolGroup00 using Redhat Gui. It is successful. Then, i decided to create logical volumes out of it..

Funny thing I do get Ubuntu OS Audio sounds Now as well I lost control of my Volume with my Keyboard, pretty sure it has to do with the same Sound icon in the Top panel that is missing The only way I can control Audio is Manually using: gnome-alsamixer 0.9.7
It sucks big time, because I can't control my Audio when ever I need to mute it or upper/lower it through my keyboard fastly when needed. having to manually opening an application to be able to change/control the Audio volume is a huge hassle for me

Dual PII 400, 512Mb with a Promise SuperTrak 100 IDE Array Controller. At present I have only one drive on the controller, configured for 1 JBOD array. I install FC9 with no problem. New partition is created and formatted, Grub is installed, and then... Grub is found and booted, but then I get:

No volume groups found Volume group "VolGroup00" not found Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01) mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' I can boot in rescue mode, chroot to the installed system. I changed the kernel boot parm "root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00"
A directory /test/test1 is created & under /test1 there are some files & subdirectories with data in it. I had copied the files (text & script files) with command as,
cp -irv /test/test1/.* /test as per the requirement but what i see in destinarion i.e, /test that no files or directory has been copied in /test & the files/directories is also removed from source i.e, /test/test1
so my query is how can i get the files/directories back with data?
I was tired and went to delete a directory and its content and forgot to specify the directory name, i entered: rm * -R

This has been bugging me for a few weeks now all of a sudden i lost my email icon chat etc and the volume icon in the top notification area.
i have tried deleting and re adding the notification area back but they are still missing.
also sometime when i boot up i loose my minimize and close window icons on the windows???

I'm running Maverick on an HP dv6 laptop. I tried recording a video via VLC with the machine's 'TrueVision' webcam. The result seemed to lack audio, so I had a look in preferences > sound. The input tab had the mute button ticked, so I unticked it and tried adjusting the level (while realising I was probably just configuring the mic port and not the webcam's inbuilt mics).
Then things turned bad: pointer became sluggish, and changes I made to the level slider took ages to be reflected visually on screen. I queued up a pile of clicks on the 'close' button and went away for a while. On return, I was met with a box inviting me to stop a script with some screen-width-long incomprehensible name, which of course I did.
Now the system's in a state which sees windows missing title bars (tho' not menu bars) and (more problematically) the upper and lower bars on the desktop absent. I issued a hibernate command from the terminal in the hope that on waking the system would be 'fixed', but nothing changed. I tried alt-tabbing to access my open applications and close them gracefully but this command is ignored. I have 'zillions' of apps going with unsaved data and am not sure what to try next. I'd be happy just to be able to task switch to each open prog and exit it gracefully then restart. But my knowledge of the command line is such that your help is required =) .

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was moving a folder using Nautilus from an internal drive to a USB drive when suddenly, the power failed and the system rebooted before the UPS could go into backup. After I booted the PC again, half the files are are in neither of the drives. Do they go into a temporary folder first? There's nothing in /tmp and there's no Lost+Found folder. Is there anyway to get back those files? I'll always copy and delete from now on instead of moving.

Thinking this would be an easy process I went into nautilus (gksudo nautilus) and right-clicked on the icon representing the volume, selected Rename and typed in "Photos". I now cannot access that volume from Ubuntu but I can from Windows XP (where it is still labelled "New Volume). When I try to access it I get the error message: "Cannot mount Volume. I'm trying to remotely access windows log files from linux. So far I've found two different approaches.
Install syslog server on windows machine and let windows send log files to linux, read those files Remotely access log files with wmi implementation for linux.
Does anyone know about limitations for those two approaches before I dive into implementation?
