General :: MAKE BZIMAGE Doesn't Work When Compile And Install New Kernel?
Jul 19, 2010whenever i'm in the process of compiling and installing a new kernel in ubuntu lucid lynx i get an error message when i get to the make bzimage part is there some sort of program that i needed to install first or is there an alternative to doing this.

Jul 20, 2011I've found myself using the -v flag for lots of applications less and less (especially for trivial stuff like tar and cp). However, when I did and I was, say, unzipping a large file, it would take longer than when I didn't use the -v flag.I assume this is because the terminal has to process the text and I'm filling up whatever buffer it might have. But my question is, does this make the application actually run slower or does it complete in the same amount of time and what I'm seeing is the terminal trying to catch up?

Feb 25, 2011I need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

Jun 6, 2010I'm installing Slackware 13.1 on a Samsung N150 netbook and am stuck trying to make the special keys do their normal functions when using a virtual terminal, that is not under X. Under X + Xfce it can be done via Menu->Settings->Keyboard->"Application Shortcuts".
In essence the question is how to make a special key (example Fn+Up to increase screen brightness) run a command in the background.
Changed title and text to make clear that the command should not run in a virtual terminal but while the display is being used for a virtual terminal, that is after Ctrl+Alt+F2 for example.

Mar 26, 2016I build and use a custom kernel, and use the nvidia driver. This is on debian stretch.
By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:
CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=8 nice -n19 ionice -c3 fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-something --revision=1 kernel_image kernel_headers
These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.
